Solid Start to the Back Half of Season 3
ThomasDrufke23 January 2018
After the best episode of the series, I highly doubted that the follow-up was going to be anywhere near the quality of Reign's defeat of Supergirl before Christmas. Luckily, this episode didn't necessarily try to be better, but it certainly was a serviceable episode. And ironically, I think the best thing this show did was make a creative way to bring Supergirl back within one episode of her falling to Reign. It was something I originally thought would be nice to 'sit on' for a bit, but I've seen too many of these CW shows botch this type of arc. I mean, Arrow season 3 is a prime example which had a similar type of moment in episode 3-10.

This episode introduced Brainiac 5 to assist in Supergirl's return and it was difficult to accept the strange addition at first, but I grew to enjoy the Star Trek-y and comic-booky inspired decision. Overall, the way in which Kara was trapped and escaped her brain coma or whatever the heck you want to call it, I thought was an interesting way to bring her back.

It's also just nice to see a villain make a continued presence on this show, especially one as good as Reign thus far. Odette Annable continues to grow in this worldkiller role and I'm very intrigued to see where it goes by the time we reach the end of the season.

Supergirl - S03E10 Legion of Superheroes

Warning: Spoilers
Supergirl is back after it's mid-season break and it is off to a strong start. After coming off a fairly strong ending to the first half of season 3, I was worried that the second half would struggle to keep up the same level of quality.

I really enjoyed what they did with this episode. I thought the concept of putting Kara in a dream state worked really well similar to what The Flash did with Barry when he ented the Speedforce in season 2. I always like when these superhero shows spend some time focusing on the person behind the mask and I thought that this was a really strong Kara episode.

One of the elements of this episode that I really enjoyed was the Legion of Superheroes. Without getting too far ahead, I really hope the Legion of Superheroes are a team that frequent guests throughout this series similar to what Arrow and Flash do with Legends. I really like the dynamic they have together as a team and with the other members of the Supergirl crew. Which brings me to Brainiac. At first I was a little worried that he would turn into one of those quirky and annoying character but he didn't. He was a character that had his quirks but it fitted into the story they were telling. After this episode it left me wanting to see a Legion of Superheroes spin-off show and Brainiac was the main reason for that.

I have really enjoyed what they have done with Reign this season and again this episode. I think it was a really smart decision to split the Reign and Samantha personalities because the show can still utilise the Samantha dynamic with the characters while still having a strong villain present. While I think the whole villain story of the "justice system fails so they will take matters into their own hands" has been a bit overused in recent years, I am still looking forward to see what they can do with Reign in the second half of this season.

Overall, this episode was a great introduction back to Supergirl for the second half of season 3. It has been a while since I have been excited to see what Supergirl can produce, but after this episode, I'm looking forward to see what the rest of this season has install.

Strong conclusion to the mid-season cliffhanger
jwwalrath-227-8548721 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This isn't the first time where a show has the hero learn to bounce back from a defeat at the hands of a villain, but this episode does it quite well. Supergirl finally comes to a head to her reluctance to be a human being. We get to see the Legion of Superheroes in action for the first time in a great final fight with Reign.

Brainiac 5 is a great new addition to the show. Saturn Girl, unfortunately hasn't been very interesting, B5, however is a lot of fun. He's a bit socially inept and egotistical, but can be easily corrected or embarrassed. Thomas Coville's character takes another interesting turn. The human obsessed with Kryptonian religion has actually turned out to be one of the most original concepts for this show.

After the big fight, it will be interesting to see if they can top themselves with the Reign storyline.

Mon El to the rescue
glstrom-1426018 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
So when I first saw Brainiac and his costume I thought it was some kind of a joke, seriously three lights stuck to his forehead and splotchy makeup job, weak blocking (I will stare at this plant I'm so smart) and dialogue. Seems facial recognition isn't a strong suit at the ol DEO or world of Mon El as Reign would not be that tough to ID. While we are at it exactly what about Mon El is super (except for his taste in women) ? Oh, I'll put on a costume now and we will really get them...L ring light up!!! Please, Green Lantern went that a way, surely you can come up with something. Oh, and sis, why exactly do you think you can kung fu your way through the world....you are not super...got it? Thankfully Kara comes to with the help of a cat that got no credit whatsoever and saved the day since the legion of weak costume braniac and the future twins brought nothing to the party. Move on Mon el, you are way past your 15 min, give James some advice on your way out, don't be a wishy washy loser, move or move on, take your damn camera too photo guy, would be a first.

Oh, yeah, another Supergirl in a coma episode.
bsimpson18919 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Supergirl has the knack for getting knocked unconscious. The best part was the throw back to the 80s with Bon Jovi Livin on a Prayer. But we did get to meet Brainiac.

Another Boring Bottle Episode...
lassegalsgaard-4528411 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
So, something that the four Arrowverse shows really like to do is have these bottle episodes a couple of times each season. An episode that focuses on the characters and them coming to terms with something about themselves. Last year, we saw one of the greatest examples of that with the "Arrow" episode "Kapiushon" that was all about breaking Oliver Queen and make him reveal what was really driving his crusade back in Season 1. They have done it multiple times and it has started to become a tired trend. To the point where, unless they are extremely good, I would prefer for them to not be present. However, as Kara needs to come to terms with her identity, the writers found it wisest to write another bottle episode. In contrast to the great bottle episode on "Arrow," this one came across as unnecessary and dragged out to the point where I didn't care about Kara and her realization.

The things that this episode had going for it, was the further exploration of the Legion of Superheroes. This subplot has given Mon-El a reason to be in the show, and I appreciate the writers for giving him something of a purpose. Even though we don't know what their purpose is yet, we get some interesting updates in this episode, when it is revealed that they have something in their DNA that is very important for their mission. The writers are slowly building momentum for these characters and a building up for a great revelation that I personally can't wait for.

I did mention that this episode's main story dragged out a little too long. The story with Kara in her coma, and her trying to find out what her subconscious wants to tell her, was intriguing in the first few scenes, but quickly became irrelevant for the overarching story that the writers are setting up for the season. Her little scenes with Brainiac-5 were not leading up to anything other than Kara finding out that she needs to be Kara, as well as Supergirl. This all came across as unimportant for the story, and I think the writers did a disservice to their main character by putting her to the sideline, just to have her come in and save the day.

There was a lot of fun dynamic between Kara and Brainiac-5, though. The actors had great chemistry and worked in their respective roles. Brainiac-5 ultimately became one of the standout characters in this episode, and I am excited to see more.

The development of Reign was also a big plus in this episode. I am still confused with the reasons behind her mission, but I think they are building her character up before revealing to the audience what her actual mission is. It was exciting to see how Kryptonite affects her, but not enough to truly stop her rage and her powers. Also, the revelation at the end that there are more like her, was a need reveal and I think our heroes are going to have to train a bit harder to defeat her.

With that said, the episode lacked a lot of tension. The final battle between the Legion and Reign was not that intense and came off as very lacking. It also leads to a bad habit by the writers to try and set up false tension. There was a lot of scenes where I thought something exciting would happen, but it ultimately simply led to a joke or an anticlimactic stop. The writers need to get a better grip on their action sequences, and also needs to up their game when it comes to intensity.

This episode also focuses way too much on the unimportant characters. Thomas Coville had a nice episode, but even in that episode, he came across as someone who doesn't have a place among these great characters. Coville has a small part in this particular episode, but it definitely seems like he will have a big role in the second half of the season. I have no interest in seeing him as a major character, as he doesn't come across as anything more than waste of time and space.

The LSH

Warning: Spoilers
I was a little disappointed with this episode because I expected to see many more Legionnaires, and because some of them were portrayed wrong. Brainiac-5 is very adept with computers, systems, and many of that stuff, but the really psychological and powerful telepath of the team is Imra Ardeen, aka Saturn Girl, who is also not a telekinetic. She should have been the one helping Kara with her subsconscious, and her attacks should have been psionic in nature.
