Good start. Not a rehash of The Goldbergs
nickewi-937-86940318 October 2018
The show is not a rehash of the Goldbergs. If anything closer to the Wonder Years.

I found it unique and a good mix of characters to learn more about during this turbulent time.

Such a Find

One critic suggested this was part Brady Bunch, part That 70's Show, and I agree. Michael Cuditz and Mary McCormack head a delightful cast. They create comic fervor with snippets of pathos into a charming romp about a large, Catholic working class family in Hollywood in the Early 70's.

Best sitcom on TV
gryhndrsh28 November 2018
As some have said, it may remind you of The Wonders Years, but it's so much more!! I just watched the 6th episode of Season 1 and there were a good half dozen laugh out loud moments!!

Funny and True!
debracasserly13 January 2019
I absolutely love this show! Growing up not only in a (quarter-Irish) Catholic family, but as a teen in the early 70's, this show is spot-on. The cultural and religious references resonate and the decor and clothes take me back. And it is so funny!! The cast is fabulous, Mary McCormack is fantastic as the no-nonsense mom. The intro of no seat belts, bike helmets, etc. is a hoot and exactly what others in my age group talk about - we we're not raised as hothouse flowers and yet we survived growing up and went on to thrive. Judging by the majority of the other reviews, this is a well-loved show. ABC...are you reading this? Please don't cancel this gem of a show!!

Great Show!

If you are a child of the 70s then this is the perfect show for you. Great cast, very well written, and funny. Brings back memories of my childhood and some of my friends as well. Hands down one of the best new sitcoms to come out in years

Fun, Clean Show for Everyone!
laurablack-0147628 November 2018
Yes, this is close to the 80's The Goldbergs but it has its own niche. I know of families back in the 70's with 8 or more kids and you knew they were Catholic. The parents are great in this show, and the actors playing the kids do a great job ! Let's keep this show on!!

Thank you so much for a great 1970's flash back. This is so much funnier than the Goldbergs. Growing up in the suburbs of Michigan this is pretty much how we grew up. From Church to brothers & sisters etc. GREAT writing & ACTING!!!! Please keep for several more seasons, so GOOD!!!

Got Off to a Good Start
debramorey5217 October 2018
I was going to skip this after watching the first twenty or so minutes. Felt bad for the kids who seemed to get lost in the shuffle of a big family, with their feelings discounted. But the last few minutes where the parents seemed to come around really saved it for me. I'll be watching . . .

This is my life!!
carpenterschild6 January 2019
I was born in 1962 and raised in the 70's. Wow!! My mom didn't wear the dresses but the hairstyle and chaos in the house is spot on! We had SO much more freedom and our parents never worried about where we were! And... we beat the crap out of each other... all the time! They just told us not to kill each other 😂😂 I hope this show is renewed for another season! My generation needs at show that fits us!

A series that is passable

Although it is not the best series ever, it is entertaining and fun enough to be enjoyed.

I'm scared to love this show......
mija28825 November 2018
Because I'm the jinx that gets the great ones axed. Seriously. The first time I saw TKAAR I almost weeped because from soup to nuts I adored everything about it and the kicker was the "repeat watch and loved it even more" but alas, that little voice in my head said "don't get comfortable so enjoy it while I can." I'm not a negative ninny, I just seem to kill great shows and THIS is a great show IMHO. I love every character, the casting is perfection, the writing is on point. The only problem is the fake Jesus hair on the eldest son. Between this and Spike Lee's "CROOKLYN", I'm back in growing up in the 70's heaven.

might be better as a movie
cherold1 December 2018
The Kids Are Alright had a number of interesting moments in the first episode. Some of them are funny, but more often they are interestingly real moments that don't *quite* fit in a sitcom format. The first moment I really liked in the show was when the very large Catholic family perfunctorily says their pre-breakfast prayers while running around. It's a keenly observed moment, but not an especially funny one.

Keenly observed moments work great in a small indie comedy-drama film, but are a harder fit in a sitcom. Parts of the show feel very sitcom-jokey, and parts seem like a very sincere, amusing look at a particular sort of family at a particular sort of time, and these elements don't totally mesh.

There are some very funny moments in the show, mainly courtesy of the mom's cavalier attitude towards her children, and considering the size of the cast, the show does a good job of quickly differentiating the children, even if their sheer numbers can feel overwhelming.

Overall I'd say this is a good sitcom in a time where there are too many better sitcoms (Alone Together, Speechless, The Real O'Neals) for me to be able to squeeze it into my crowded TV viewing schedule. But I hope the creator makes a movie about his family someday. I'd watch that.

Happy I Discovered This Hilarious Show
Cowgirl577 December 2018
Stumbled on this network show by accident and so glad I did. Great acting by a wonderful cast of adults and children, surprisingly believable (reminds me of my childhood), in an authentic environment. The costumes, sets, and context such as TV show and current event references are all spot on. I laugh through each episode and look forward to the next. And since I don't find many network shows I like and when I do they end up cancelled, I hope I'm not jinxing this one by loving it!

Ahhhhh...
lulu-9214721 November 2018
Oh how nice it is to watch a real family show. Remember them? Where you sit with your children, of all ages, and you can enjoy a good clean show? Other then The Middle, I can't. This show is adorable. The family dynamics, mom acts tough but is a lover of her kids. The dad, hard working, the head of the house or his he? It all works and it does it with a set that has you sure it's the '70's. Funny, sweet and heart warming, this deserves to be a keeper!!!

What a great show!

Honestly, I watched this by accident. I had no intention of watching the show and knew nothing about it. It caught my attention immediately and before I knew it 30 minutes went by and I was hooked. It was one of the best pilots I've seen!

Why do all the good sitcoms get cancelled?
brucesolon29 April 2020
A good script, entertaining characters and it doesn't get a second season? Other bland drivel gets season after season. Glad we have this at least.

More Hollywood "Creativity"
chuckbob17 October 2018
"Artists" involved with TV and film companies prove their utter lack of shame and true artistic vision with another clone. So... The Goldbergs becomes a hit and what happens? Hey, lets do it again but with a Catholic family this time. The show is really not bad but the premise is a rehash. How many Jurassic Parks are we up to now? Saw? Etc.? These people think they're insightful, intelligent, and well enough informed to tell anyone what their political or social beliefs should be?

Fantastic

Am loving this show. I watch it the next day on demand and can't get enough. It's a typical first season, not knowing whether to end it or continue on. Comedic, heartwarming, and a parenting struggle we all go through today.

Good Enough
PennyReviews17 September 2019
It was not that bad, but it just felt like something you have watched before. Maybe the Goldbergs needed a 70's spin or something, as it was almost the same. What I did enjoy in this one were the many children with the unique personalities, which made the series interesting.

Highly entertaining
jthomas-732297 December 2018
This show is extremely funny. Each of the actors and actresses really are believable that they are a true family. Love how it's set in the 70's. Glad it's renewed for a second season.

I hate it when they do this...
ziljiin18 October 2018
Supposedly this is set in 1972 and they're using phrases such as "phony news" and playing music that didn't come out until years later. The Show runners really ought to research timelines.
