Tom Hanks in A Man Called Otto (2022)

Goofs

A Man Called Otto

Edit

Continuity

When Marisol and her husband go out on a date, leaving Otto to babysit their girls, they set the house alarm to the "stay" mode. When they come back later, they open the door and get in the house without the alarm going off and without disarming it.
The table disappears when Otto falls from the ceiling, but in the next shot it reappears.
Otto says he will pay for six days of gas. When he allows Malcolm to stay overnight (much later than six days after the gas would be off), Malcolm has eggs and coffee, and the gas stove clearly burns.
When Andy attempts to park the U-Haul trailer, there is a shot where the trailer is perpendicular to the houses. In the next shot the trailer is only at a 45 degree angle to the house. Its position alternates a few times during the scene.
In the beginning when Otto sits next to Sonja's grave site, it shows her passing in April 2018. Later in the movie when Otto gives Marisol a driving lesson, the date on the dashboard shows February, 2018 -- two months before Sonja passes.

Factual errors

When the younger Otto is seen by a doctor and denied military service, the chest x-ray does not show an enlarged heart, as can be seen in cardiomyopathy, but a massive tumor in the upper part of the left lung.
Otto is shown receiving a degree in Engineering. Engineering degrees are not generic, there is always a specific area, such as Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, etc.
When young Reuben shows young Otto his new Toyota Celica GT convertible, Reuben says it is a 5-speed automatic. That cannot be true because the 1992 or 1993 Celica in his garage was only available with a 4-speed automatic transmission or a 5-speed manual transmission.
On the train, Otto says a 1964 quarter is pure silver. They are actually 90% silver and 10% copper.
The gas company most likely will not turn off the gas in the middle of winter unless it is called in the same day.

Incorrectly regarded as goofs

Revealing mistakes

If Otto's wife was in a wheelchair for forty years, how did the house not appear to be handicap accessible? Otto clearly hadn't touched anything in the house after her death, but the only noticeable building alteration was the low counter top in the kitchen. No permanent ramps? No stair lift?

Tommy finds a ramp for Sonya in Otto's garage while borrowing a ladder.
40:41 into the movie, it had snowed the night before leaving snow on the sidewalk. When Tommy was on the ladder trying to open a stuck window, one can see two layers of roofs for all the apartments down the street. There isn't any snow on any of them. Each one is completely dry, but the sidewalks are still covered in snow.
When Otto rocks the baby to sleep, he's a little aggressive in the rocking. One can clearly see the doll in the crib rolling over.

Miscellaneous

The end credits list members of an orchestra apparently playing the score of the film. Listed are "Principle Violin" and some other "principle" instruments. The correct term is actually "Principal Violin."
When Otto gives the crib to Marisol, he says he gave it a fresh coat of paint, but the very detailed patterns on the headboard are still visible.

Anachronisms

Near the end of the movie, Otto purchases a new truck -- a Chevrolet Silverado EV. Otto passes in 2022, as shown by the engraving on his tombstone. Despite that, the truck is not yet available for purchase as of March 2023.
When Otto is at the train station, one sees a line of trains parked outside. They are yellow. These rail cars are modern safecar automobile trains and didn't exist at the time the movie was set in. Most automotive carriers at the time were flat beds or side load.
