Libraries never display books held open on stands, as shown on multiple shelves in the Havenport Library. Doing so cracks the spines, which weakens the bookbinding glue, which can lead to pages loosening and falling out. Also the open pages would suffer UV deterioration from exposure to sunlight.
No librarian worth the title would ever do any of this to a book still in circulation.
The only exception would be if the books were designated as museum or display pieces, and were placed behind UV-protective glass or a dedicated area well away from natural light.
The stacks alone should have alerted Cassandra to something being awry.

During the montage of Cassandra starting work at the library, she is shown stamping books, but the stamp leaves no mark.
