Static
Prismark106 April 2020
A sitcom with a couple of funny jokes. Static would had been my pick for the 2017 run of Comedy Playhouse's to be turned into a series.

Instead it was the unfunny Mister Winner, broadcast in 2020 with absolutely no one talking about it.

Written by Rob Beckett and Shaun Pye.

Rob has lost his job in London and moves in with his parents. They have just sold their house in London and moved to a caravan site in Margate.

Squashed in, Rob tries to get used to caravan living. He plans to make it back to a London for a date. However spending time helping his dad, eating 12 lamb chops in a barbecue and a night of entertainment in the local bar. Rob has to get used to life in Margate.

Rob Beckett gives a winning performance. He even likes himself to Seabiscuit. There are several references to Brexit which even three years later have not aged.

Phil Davis plays his dad who is a wheeler dealer. He has just bought some canisters of dodgy Chinese gas. I am sure nothing will go wrong.

Not even slightly funny

Warning: Spoilers
I don't know how hard it is to write comedy so maybe I am being a little harsh but there was nothing remotely funny or endearing to be found here. Rob is funny because of his slightly large teeth and either being or pretending to be a bit under-educated but he didn't put any of this to great use. The characters were a bit one dimensional and it was like going from one cliché scene to another. If anyone didn't see the last "hilarious" scene coming after the budget was spent on the "Chinese" gas bottles then I would be surprised.

Good comedy on a small scale

Some good laughs from a great cast with Alison Steadman and Phil Davis providing excellent experience. Despite a lack of formal acting training Rob Beckett showed his great comedy timing. The claustrophobic accommodation gave added spice to the unfortunate life experiences of Rob and the bumbling amiability of his parents gave plenty of scope for humour. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
