Started Well But Got Silly
canuck-236348 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Decently acted and started with potential, but then it went off the rails and got plain stupid. I was left scratching my head as to wtf I had just watched and why I had stuck with it to the end. Sex scenes were uncomfortably explicit and the typical double standard - erect penis on regular display while women were topless but wore panties throughout sex, which was pretty bizarre. Something sacred about labia I guess! If you are into seeing a large erect dick regularly then this is the movie for you, otherwise I strongly suggest not wasting your time on this movie but finding something that makes sense by the time the credits roll.

Absolute rubbish

Lonely Hearts (2019) simply never looks like something that would be broadcast on tv, unless we're talking on a late-night slot on Bravo in 2005. Shaky hand-held cameras and poor sound recording went out of vogue with Davina McColl's Streetmate, guys. It's not a deal-breaker by any means though, and a terrific campfire question-and-answer game in the last act more than makes up for it, where uncomfortable truths are revealed in a squirm-inducing fashion. There's an unsettling folk-horror vibe to some parts too, particularly a treasure hunt sequence. I just wish they'd used the countryside location more, to fully capitalise on it. The horror elements don't really come to the fore until the last few minutes, in an ending that isn't really earned and doesn't make much sense, but is fairly effective nonetheless. Up until that point, Lonely Hearts is more of a satirical erotic drama, which is a small, small genre indeed.

So bad it's destroyed my perspective of things
cutter-charlie27 October 2023
Lonely Hearts (201) tells a very pointless and frustrating story about a group of individuals who basically want to get laid but reworded to love. Not sure why people came on board exactly to make this project, not do I understand why Sam Mason Bell keeps working with notorious creep Martin W Payne. Extremely graphic sex scenes for shock factor. Pornography disguised as a horror? Give me a break! Lonely Hearts doesn't do any justice in the film industry due to its lazy cinematic quality, terrible sound, awful dialogue. The only decent thing was the actors and I'm sure they regret being in this now.

This was... something and a half
sonjablade22125 October 2023
Basically an excuse for some (attempted) titillating sex that uses horror trappings in an bid to disguise what it's actually concerned with. And it doesn't really perform well on any front (being either sexy or scary). The idea of utilizing a reality show as a setting for some horror shenanigans is solid enough, but there's just nothing to distinguish it from similar offerings, and it takes WAY too long for anything even remotely creepy to begin to transpire. The only real positive that can found here is Alice Mulholland, who is the performer that tries hardest to find a real character in the material.

Finally the female gaze
sebastianvl-7219315 May 2024
This film is all you can expect given the budget and the quite niche indie horror subgenre. But even then, there are much better and more originals examples out there that display a better utilization of the limited budget at hand.

But I must really single out one actor in Lonely Hearts, or rather his extraordinarely big 'member', which clearly stands out: Chris Mills. His brave (exploitative) nude scene is one of the few silver linings in this film. In the past it has usually been female nudity that served as a gateway to attract a wider audience, in Lonely Hearts it is the focus on some truly terrific male nudity for a change which still makes this indie flick somewhat worthwhile. Great that we finally got to enjoy the female gaze when it comes to the nudity department.

Pointless exploitation
jmbovan-47-1601735 December 2023
Please let this movie cancel its tv show (within the movie).

Lonely Heaarts starts as a camping reality tv show with 5 people (2 men and 3 women) to explore singles, dating, and the extremes of reality tv.

The film ultimately ends with death, but without much reasoning for this. The rest of the movie has manipulation by the production crew, attempts at overt sex, nudity, and pushing people's boundaries. Only, this film lacks spark, character, and excitement. This film seesm to want to shock with it's approach, but the situation is a tired retread of most any dating reality show without much gumption or energy.

Lonely Hearts misses all the marks for a horror film, having no tension or suspense. It simply panders to what we think we want to see behind the scenes of a reality show. And then it's cobbled with a sudden shift in tone without much in terms of explanation or rationality.

Not worth watching at all.

Watch the film "Series 7" instead
mike-c-b13 February 2022
There's a place for amateur Big Brother style films that get out of hand (the film "Series 7" is the best), but this is full of people acting tough/pretty, instead of being themselves.

The majority of the film is switching between an idea of restrained and unrestrained. Restrained being an old uptight couple. Unrestrained being heartless people choking and banging each other while grinning.

Lazy

Did the makers of this film not have enough friends or something? What kind of dating show premise features only FIVE people, already clearly broken up into groups (the old man and the old woman together, the young people together). There was. A line that stated "you are the last two couples" as if they started out with more than FIVE PEOPLE!!! COMPLETELY unnecessary GRAPHIC sex scenes, making this movie more porno than horror. Blah scenery. Looks like it was shot in a clearing adjacent to a corn field. And the "game" was ridiculous. And the ending was convoluted, confusing, nonsensical trash. What was even the purpose of it all!?!? WHAT was really going on!?!? WHY was this happening!?! My favorite part was the "torture",because pouring wine on someone's body and rubbing a small jar candle on their chest is HORRIFIC!!! (insert THICK sarcasm here) and yes, masking tape does indeed hold bloody items immobile, seeing at it is pretty much the strongest tape you can buy........(insert that sarcasm again!!) Overall this movie was so stupid it would have been held back if it was a schoolchild. It's too late for me.... I can't unsee this. But you have a chance, and a choice. Save yourself!

Twisted tale
simonarcher-724535 February 2020
Lonely hearts

Back in the "good old days" when we had to make our own entertainment, how we enjoyed bull baiting. In these hi tech empowered days we have reality tv. Into the mix of Celebrity Big Brother Love Island, et al, we now have "Lonely Hearts". Will you find love and companionship over the next 3 days ?

Five characters, isolated, pressured, tasked, and above all, watched constantly, Donny, the trendy vicar and Carol, the emergent widow as the older generation are sharing with the youngsters, Kirsty, a Geordie lass, Freddy, an Essex geezer and Claire, a doe eyed ingénue.

Even as they arrive and set up, Patricia, the director, leaves no doubt to the viewers she has a hidden agenda, but even she has to deliver to the money people "upstairs" The wannabe celebrities don't so much drive towards a conclusion as head towards it like a car on a sheet of ice.

The production values on this "limited budget" film from the prolific Trash Arts people lend themselves admirably to the locale and set up, confident and steady characterizations by all the actors carry the scenes along making this an involving study of how much people would push for their 15 minutes of fame and how much they would let themselves be pushed. Even so, in amongst the tasks, the pairings and the arguments, the most frightening part is when the participants have to tell the truth about themselves.

Of course, a twisted and twisty idea like this must end unhappily, and it does, big time. Hard to imagine anyone watching this wanting to sign up for the next episode. But never underestimate public taste.

Fantastic indie horror

Original and inventive indie horror. Check this out if you want an enjoyable ride away from the mainstream. A low budget film with high production values.

Something different
dgonzalez-4079721 October 2021
It was something of a different premise for a film. I loved that there was nudity. I think it was well incorporated into the actual film. Not just an unnecessary scene(s).
