The local volunteers of the coastal
life guard service who volunteer to save people's lives are rightly showcased as heroes here. At a moment's notice, they drop everything and speed out into cold, rain and big waves. The body worn cameras dramatically capture the moments people are rescued right before they drown. Sometimes the victims are spotted in a cave, or on an overturned or sinking boat or on a lilo floating out to sea. The line between life and death is so thin. The series is beautifully produced and directed. Sometimes a bit melodramatic. And you don't tend to see the many who probably don't survive. But these are great, real life human stories.

A beacon of hope

This BBC documentary series is very well produced. You meet the amazing volunteers of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution in short clips, and then see them in real life action as they save those in danger at sea. You also meet the lucky people who are rescued, so you get a sense from both sides of the many stories of danger and compassion. The production delivers an overriding respect for the RNLI and for the victims of circumstance. There is a good balance of.action and backstory, including a bit of after-story. Watching this series leaves you with renewed faith in humankind (the volunteers are utterly praiseworthy!), and with a sense of hope that despite the perils we may face there are people who care enough to risk their own well being to ensure ours. Entertaining, educational, uplifting. What more could you ask for?
