A single mother at sixteen Alice meets Michael at church and they marry but she soon realizes he is more interested in men, a fact his parents knew when encouraging the wedding to mask his sexuality. Now, in 1957, the Wolfenden report seems to offer Michael hope but in his own way he still loves Alice and they stay together.
