Afterbirth: The Evolution of Species (2017)
*** (out of 4)
This thirty-six minute documentary takes a look at the making of SPECIES, the 1995 sci-fi film that has become a cult classic over the years. Roger Donaldson (director), Christopher Young (composer), Andzej Bartkowiak (cinematographer), John Muto (production designer), and Steve Johnson (creature designer) are among the people interviewed who discuss the making of the picture. This was actually the second documentary to be made on the film and this one here takes a closer look at the special effects. We get a few stories dealing with the casting but the majority of the running time is devoted to the special effects used in the movie. We get countless scenes from the actual film and then we get to hear the stories behind them. There's some really fascinating stuff dealing with the effects including how some of the more graphic murders were pulled off. Fans of SPECIES will certainly enjoy the stories here.
