The train in which Arthur is riding clearly has the LNER (London and North Eastern Railway) name on the windows and compartment dividers. But the exterior livery of the carriage is the painted maroon of LMS (London Midland Scotland) Railway. LNER carriages had varnished teak exteriors.
This is set in the early 1950s, after UK rail nationalisation and establishment of British Rail in 1948 to run the entire network.
With post-war austerity, much of the earlier rolling stock remained in use on its original routes for several years, but LNER trains were never painted in LMS maroon.
The outlines of Matthew Goode's soft contact lenses on his sclera are visible in a closeup of his eyes. In the mid 1950s, hard contact lens would have sat only on the cornea, not extending as far as the sclera.
