Wonderful adaptation

Absolutely brilliant....can't wait to see how this develops. Superb casting choices with David Tennent appearing to be possessed by Bill Nighy.

Different take on how we're all going to because of the apocalypse kept me hooked and laughing the whole time. Would love to see more unnerving dark humor in the following episodes, or zombies. Bleh.

Exactly how I remembered it
metalbassmike1 June 2019
Based on the best book, by Sir Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. My absolute favourite book since I was a teenager.

This is a perfect rendition, it is exactly how I pictured it in my head. Sir Terry would be proud. Absolutely 10/10 for me.

Sir Terry Pratchett would be proud

I've been a fan of the book, but I am always skeptical with adaptations. This episode proves that the spirit and wit that I loved so much in the books is alive and well in this series.

Thank you for doing it justice

A tribute to the book I never read.
GraXXoR25 June 2019
What can I say? As someone who was surrounded by Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett readers as a teen, I didn't see what all the fuss was about.

I had been a staunch supporter of "hard" sci-fi: Asimov, Heinlein, Crichton, Lem et al ... I didn't see what all the fuss was about and found the surreal mix of humour with the "serious business" of humanity's future rather demeaning...

But then I watched Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective agency on Netflix and I suddenly realised what I had been missing all these years..

Why had I ridden my high horse? Why had I been elitist instead of inclusive? WHy had I denied myself the pleasures of Ringworld and Rincewind all these years????!

Here I was a fan of The Blackadder and Red Dwarf on TV but when it came to contemporary books I remained aloof and somehow thought that humour was discrete from intellect...

Oh fool is me...!!

Do I still have time to make up for lost.... er.... time?

I do indeed hope so..

My Kindle is now loaded with the bits of the 80s and 90s I missed when I was actually there!

Captures the dry humor of the novels
jayakrishnanj5 June 2019
It captures the dry with-held humor that i remember from the books. I can see that the material for the book hasn't bee diluted beyond measure. This means that they have positively added material. Looking forward to the future episodes.

This shows is a masterpiece

Good Omens, a 30 years-old comic fantasy novel by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, has finally been adapted for TV. The TV series, written and executive-produced by Neil Gaiman, and directed by Douglas Mackinnon, is a blend of sprightly, silly, and macabre, making it the best adaptation fans could have hoped for. The show's British personality and playful humor make it a must-watch for fans of the original novel. Good Omens, a highly populated series, is based on the centuries-old relationship between angel-demon double act Aziraphale and Crowley. Michael Sheen and David Tennant provide continuity and excellent lines, retaining their Pratchettian specificity. The series has an international budget and global cast, thanks to Amazon and Neil Gaiman's address book. It feels British, with a sense of imaginative, silly, and comforting, reminiscent of Douglas Adams, Monty Python, the A40 at Denham, and BBC Radio 4. The show's international budget is supported by Amazon and Neil Gaiman's address book, but it still feels British in the imaginative, silly, and comforting sense of Douglas Adams, Monty Python, the A40 at Denham, and BBC Radio 4. Terry Pratchett's presence is felt in various ways, including his black fedora and scarf hanging from a bookshop set. The show hasn't been bugged up in translation, keeping the story eccentric and silly. Episode one begins with a Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy-style opening, introducing Frances McDormand as God. Demon Crawley, a character from Demon Crawley, tries to answer philosophical questions about God's benevolence, the difference between good and evil, and the good and evil of blind adherence to a divine plan. The film is light and humorous, featuring a mix of clowning and silly characters. The demon, Tennant, is louche and snake-eyed, while the angel, Sheen, is endearing and funny. The cast includes Hastur and Ligur, Satanic nuns, Archangel Gabriel, the ambassadorial family, the Youngs, denizens of hell, and Them. The characters are all played by actors who prompt a happy grunt of recognition. The cast includes Jon Hamm, Nick Offerman, and Nina Sosanya, with big names playing tiny parts across all six episodes, showcasing the project's draw. Crowley is tasked with bringing about Armageddon by Hell, while Aziraphale eats sushi. The sisters are briefed to switch babies and ensure the couple receives the prophesied Antichrist. As they work for Crowley, they emphasize the importance of switching the babies. Crowley calls Aziraphale and they discuss the apocalypse in St. James' Park. The demon reminds them they have 11 years until Armageddon. With the babies switched and Aziraphale's second thoughts, they band together to be the child's Godfathers, raising him to be normal in a ploy to stop Armageddon. In the story, Crowley and Aziraphale, who are posing as nanny and gardener, attempt to influence a boy who appears normal for the time being. They report to their head offices and discuss the next steps, with Aziraphale suggesting killing the boy. However, they realize they have the wrong boy. In a great switch, the real Antichrist (Adam) arrives in rural England with a scheduled hell-hound, a small dog, just in time for his 11th birthday. Crowley realizes the dog has found its master and realizes the end of the world is upon them. Despite several time jumps and a slightly confusing narrative, Good Omens delivers a thoroughly enjoyable episode to start the 6-part drama. The comedy is on-point throughout, and the well-worked twist at the end sets the stage for the following episodes.

Neither a Good Nor a Bad Omen
injury-6544716 June 2020
Having read the book I was curious to check out this show to see how they would adapt the material. I'm a big Pratchett fan.

As it stands I can say that this first episode feels pretty much like a faithful adaptation, but to a fault. I was hoping that the tv show would do its own spin on things rather than just taking passages of dialogue verbatim from the book. It's a different medium and needs to be presented differently. At times It felt like I was just listening to the audiobook with some pretty pictures to accompany it.

I don't care for the narration. It somehow takes away from the irreverent tone of the show and tries to make it like a story time show. I really don't think that kind of exposition was required here.

I can't judge how somebody who hasn't read the book would find the show. I have a feeling they might enjoy it more because the concepts presented would feel more novel and interesting.

The acting is okay, but not great. I haven't fully warmed to the presentation of the main angel and demon yet.

I understand this first episode is a lot of set-up, so I'm hopeful that subsequent episodes can get into the meat of the humour. There were definitely glimmers Of promise in this first episode.

Good and evil ...

Meet to avoid apocalypse.

Nice premise. This first episode is filled with good special effects, quite an intriguing and a funny plot and a great sarcastic and acid humor used as a satire to religious "truths, ideas and beliefs".

If you feel like watching a fantasy- mysterious and fun show, Just give it a try.

Warning: Spoilers
I was very interested in this show beforehand and I didn't read the book so I didn't know what to expect.

Watching it I quickly understood what it's trying to do. It's trying to be fun by integrating certain aspects of modern society into it's dialogue. But the comedy aspect just doesn't work for me. Maybe it's because I am watching in german, but I think it's because they don't give their jokes time to breathe. Before I have time to start laughing they are already feeding me with new information so I quickly forget about the joke and concentrate on the substance again.

So what's left? An interesting, but kind of mediocre fantasy story.

What I really like about it tho is the production design and cinematography. The camera angles are really cool at times. What's really cool and what I've never seen in another show before (and it wouldn't work eith other shows): they are using unrealistic hair and makeup to blend in with the not very good CGI which kinda makes the bad CGI work anyway.

First episode 7/10. I hope it gets better from here.

Worst starting Episode of a Series i've ever saw
dertyler-4823111 June 2019
They try so hard to be funny but it isnt. Some said its a good dry humour...really? Monty Python, Arrested Development, Modern Family stands for good dry humour, but everything what they does right, Good Omens do wrong. If this episode would be a Stand up Comedian on a Casting show, the people would boo him off stage. Thats how the first Episode feels like. Im wondering that the actors also didnt work, there is nobody i feel symphatie for. Im objektiv, so maybe next Episodes will be better, the hope dies at least, but usualy the first episode should awake my interest. This start dont.

A fairly neutral Good and Evil made an oopsie

The humor is good and although we divert back and forth and other directions, the narrative is quite well constructed and relatively easy to follow.

Decent start to the series
itsnikhatreviews28 July 2019
It isn't intense, funny, love the portrayal and Doctor Who references. I see Tenant more as the Doctor than Crowley, but I suppose that will change soon. The first episode felt mediocre, but I believe it was a good start to the series. Can't wait to binge through the rest of the episodes.

Narrator- Rebecca Front would have been fantastic
Geekfreak1320 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Frances McDormand, does a fine job.

Rebecca Front does a great job. Rebecca is the narrator for the audio book, along with a wonderful cast.

If you have not heard her voice. I would suggest you listen to the 5 minute clip, on Good Omens on Audible.

A brand new wind to blow your mind!
Scarlett_love_poets2 July 2021
From the first ep, you can find that's so alluring, and for the following ones you're really into this movie.

This is movie the best movie that connected religous elements, but it didn't got you annoyed or bored.

The cinematography is fine, and I love the well-written plots embeded with meaningful messages about: friendship, admirable moral qualities. "the milk of human kindness".

Finally, in some ways, I assume the relationship is more than friends, soulmate maybe.
