Al Pacino, Thomas Kretschmann, and Meadow Williams in American Traitor: The Trial of Axis Sally (2021)

Goofs

American Traitor: The Trial of Axis Sally

Edit

Factual errors

In the title for the closing arguments, the title reads "Closing Arguments, Gillars v. United States". The defendant is always listed second in court actions. In this case, the United States was clearly the prosecuting agent, Gillars was obviously the defendant.
The soldier from Minot, North Dakota, along with Mildred Gillars, mispronounce Minot (MY-not) as rhyming with 'minute'.
In the movie, Gillars' final broadcast is titled as happening on May 8, 1945. This would have been after the surrender of Germany. Her final broadcast actually occurred two days earlier, one day before the surrender, on May 6, 1945.
The troops who broke into the studio on May 8, 1945 had no insignias. Judging by history, it would have been the Russians who would have shot and not taken the engineer prisoner. Additionally, the uniforms were just out of the laundry and the rifles were equally clean. Both would have been a hot mess after Berlin street fighting.
Joseph Goebbels in real life never spoke English and Mrs Gillers would had likely communicated to Goebbels in German.

Revealing mistakes

In the cell before the verdict, Billy reaches to Mildred's face and obviously squeezes something that causes it to look like tears or mucus comes from Mildred's eye or nose.

Miscellaneous

Early on, an English subtitle should read "strict and concrete." Instead, concrete is misspelled "conrecte."

Anachronisms

Two separate times, Mildred Gillars is escorted by a pair of SS guards who wear black uniforms and display Iron Crosses on the upper left shoulder of their jackets. The SS did not wear black uniforms during World War II (they wore grey) and the Iron Cross was worn on the lower left uniform pocket. The SS guards also appear to wear trousers piped with white stripes, which was something only SS generals wore.
Like many low-budget films, this one gets many details of uniforms wrong. At 47:18 a US Army Sergeant is shown wearing his rank pinned onto his collar, but the military didn't issue pin-on rank insignia for enlisted men until midway through the Vietnam War.

At the 50:00 mark an enlisted man is shown wearing the star of a Brigadier General on his collar and his ribbons are pinned on his pocket flap rather than above it, including the Army Commendation Medal, the Air Medal, the Naval Reserve Sea Service ribbon, and the Army Service Ribbon, which wasn't established until 1981.

At 51:00 a cavalry officer is shown wearing the Combat Infantryman's Badge. The Army CIB has never been awarded to anyone outside the Infantry and Special Operations military occupational specialties.

The uniforms are a hodgepodge of anachronisms and mistakes.

Crew or equipment visible

At the beginning of the verdict scene, the camera dolly track can be clearly seen at the bottom of the frame.

Character error

At 51 minutes. the Army soldier on the stand is wearing Navy ribbons, and the ribbons are upside down.
Early in the opening cabaret scene, the German MC comes on stage and speaks German to the audience. He then calls for "an American singer" in English to get the attention of Gillars at the bar. As she walks to the stage, the MC asks the audience, in English, to "give her a hand".
