Powerful and Extraordinary !
adamjkaphan1 March 2021
What an intense first point perspective told from the eyes of these beautiful human refugees. This movie puts you on the boat, in the truck, in the hospital, in these very countries that we don't even think twice about. The plight that our refugees go through is something else. We are all one race, the human race and this movie proves that! A MUST SEE for everyone!

Powerful telling of true struggle
lancestuart3 March 2021
This movie draws one into the perilous circumstances, including a display of the brutality of the Taliban, and struggles faced by refugees who seek to find their way to freedom. It's a well told true story with superb acting, directing and cinematography. Hope to see it again once theaters reopen. It's a must see for those who care about human rights.

Outstanding
farhanshohatee22 July 2021
This film is solid, acceptable content, extraordinary projecting, superb acting, and excessively coordinating. Regardless of whether the watcher doesn't care for these sorts of motion pictures, the individual in question will watch the whole film, the crowd is stuck to what exactly will occur next as the film advances. This is an incredible blend, and the imaginative style makes the film noteworthy.

Damla Sönmez acting!
rwnoa17 October 2021
Very powerful messages behind this movie. Damla Sönmez took my breath away with her acting here. She plays the role of a pregnant female doctor. I love the poster and how Damla's green eyes look like the green eyes of the famous national geographic afghan girl. Highly recommended!

We can't continue to look away and ignore that this is happening
aj-757937 July 2021
The film grips your heart and mind. Each and every moment is filled with a range of emotions that leaves you with a sense that something must be done to help stop the Refugee Crisis. There is so much I want to write about the film to share the depth of each scene, but it is truly something you must see with your own eyes and feel with your own heart. Life is far from easy for Refugees and this film gives you a glimpse at how difficult it truly is to live each day knowing it could be your last, but that for very few there may be a glimmer of hope and happiness in the end, but the chances are few and far between. If you are looking to gain a new perspective on life and love, watch this film. Share it with your family and friends. We can't keep looking away ignoring that refugees are living their best life while we continue to overlook the fact that they are not fine and something must be done.

Finally a MOVIE from the lens of refugees
SAIHYA30 July 2021
What an experience, witnessing the struggles of human refugees. Big difference from what we hear and what we saw. Regardless of being a Refugee we joined the journey of refugee from the lens we haven't seen. We are all one and thank you Sonia Nassery Cole for an amazing firm from the Afghan people and the world to understand why we are on the News for over 20 years! Love you Sonia and thank you so much.

Powerful story of real life
ep-977-3571720 August 2021
The storyboard and the director have brought a common soul on this movie. Fantastic work. Casting was fenomenal, and the setting is the "real thing". Not just computer generated scenes, but real acting in real places.

Congratulations to all, and please continue the good work bringing us stories that are happening now in the Middle East with normal people, when fundamentalists take over.

Hauntingly beautiful and important story that we all need to watch
MladenVuk20 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
One of my favorite authors, Afghani Khaled Hosseini, in his novel "The Kite Runner" wrote: "There are a lot of children in Afghanistan, but little childhood." Emphasizing the devastatingly tragic life of Afghani people in the last decades, Hosseini reminds us that what many of us take for granted is an unattainable dream for many. In a very similar way, Sonia Nassery Cole with her independent film "I am You" reminds us of the struggles Afghani refugees face in their pursuit of a better life.

We regularly use numbers to describe what's happening in Afghanistan. You can regularly hear devastating statistics on the news. Tens of thousands of Afghani civilians have been forced to flee their homes for food and safety. There is a 500% increase in child marriages. 55% percent of the Afghani population is facing famine, of which five million are children. But as shocking as this data is, those are just the numbers. For every number, percentage, and statistical information hides a profound story of human suffering in the wars of those rich and powerful that can control human fates. But, what people like Mr. Hosseini or Ms. Nassery Cole have done is show us the human tragedy, and human faces behind the numbers. For that is the true power of art. Whether we speak about literature or motion pictures, their ability to touch us and awake noble emotions in us is equally important as us knowing the full scale of the humanitarian crisis happening in Afghanistan.

Based on true events, "I am You" is a story of Afghani refugees attempting to reach Germany in their quest of finding a better life. The story is centered on Masoud, played by Emre Çetinkaya, a sweet and regular Afghani man, whose life takes a drastic turn when his father, who previously made all arrangements to flee for Germany, gets killed by a local Taliban. Masoud must leave his mother, sister, and fiancee behind all for the promise that he will be able to rescue them once he settles with his uncle in Germany. A journey across five countries is riddled with dangers as Masoud and his companions - Sarwar, played by Muhammed Cangören, who wants to be reunited with his granddaughter in Istanbul, and Ikram, (Mert Ramazan Demir), another young man trying to flee to Germany. Later, they are joined by Doctor Aisha (Damla Sönmez), a pregnant widow who was forced to stop practicing medicine. The four of them embark on their journey giving us a very accurate portrayal of the horrors refugees face.

The beauty of this movie is, first and foremost, its humane approach. The four refugees are ordinary people, faces that we meet in our daily lives - handsome boys, a polite doctor, wise old man. They are regular people in the most irregular situation. We easily sympathize with them because the movie's ultimate message carries undeniable truth - they are us. They are people with hopes and dreams, with memories, they are in love, and they form friendships. They are humans, endurable when needed but also fragile and powerless. It is a beautiful display of humanity and the human spirit in horrible circumstances.

Another layer to the story is given through Aisha's and Nazoo's (Cansu Tosun) narrative. Because being an ordinary man in war-ridden Afghanistan is certainly difficult. Being a woman is twice as hard. As we hear Aisha telling that the Taliban killed her husband and that she can no longer perform medicine, we realize that wars and humanitarian crises so often affect women much harder. To watch a pregnant woman endure everything so her child would enjoy freedom may seem like a plot of "The Handmaid's Tale" , but this is the reality of millions of women who are being objectified and discriminated against by religious zealots. Far more horrendous was the sight of Nazoo being imprisoned and maimed for being Masoud's fiancée. The saddest part is that the stories of these two women are just the tip of the iceberg of violence against women perpetuated by the Taliban in Afghanistan.

The road refugees take is certainly demanding - both physically and emotionally. This is not just about facing circumstances that will test your humanity, but also about the emotional states refugees go through. These people are not leaving their countries because they want to but because they are forced to. No more than a fish can survive on dry land, can these people survive and live a normal life in their countries. Which is fundamentally important to understand. In the world where we played with words such as "migrants" and "refugees" we often forget that devastating wars have rendered some places inhabitable. They are not searching for a better job position or a more spacious apartment. They are in search of a place where they can breathe peacefully. For the luckiest of us, that seems like a normal thing, something we take for granted. For those unfortunate, it is everything. So, when Aisha impatiently ends Osman's soliloquy about Istanbul, we hear in her voice how hurt she is by the fact that she had to leave her country, the one she loves as much as Osman loves Istanbul.

But below all the death and tragedy, we find the simple beauty of human life. Sarwar's memories of more prosperous Afghanistan are important because we need to remember that these countries are not just countries with rich cultures and histories, but also places where people lived. And just like Hosseini mentions "Titanic city" in Kabul to show us how the entire world, Afghanistan included, was united by the love story of Jack and Rose, Ms. Nassery Cole uses Sarwar's memories to show us that our perception of Afghanistan has been formed by war and all its devastating consequences. For it once was a prosperous, beautiful country where people lived their dreams.

The road to a better life doesn't end the same for everyone. Sarwar is left to wait for his family in Istanbul and Ikram was forced to go back, being threatened with the lives of his family. Aisha gives birth to a baby girl in Greece and Masoud reaches Germany, in a truck filled with dead refugees. In the end, we see him two years after, being reunited with his family and fiancée. It is an as happy ending as one can get having survived so much. Because that inspiration and hope that linger in our souls, that fire that makes us believe everything is possible is perhaps the most powerful weapon we have to endure every war. Simply, hope is the survival kit for refugees. And yes, it may not be enough sometimes, but now and then, hope proves to be everything we need.

You may never know what it means to be born and raised in a country that knows only war. You may never know what it means to have your parent killed in front of you. You may never know how it feels to abandon your home. But, what we, as human beings, can understand is their pain and loss. We can understand their fears, their emotions, and their hopes. And once we do that, we can understand the powerful three words long message from this movie's title that is in the essence of human existence: "I am you"

I (usually) Can't Be Bothered w/Subtitles
daviddubmusic29 September 2021
This film was referred to me by a friend & I'm SO happy that I was able to watch it, because this was such an inspiring movie. As suggested within it's title, these powerfully moving words; "I Am You."

This is a film about the struggles of life, love & the pursuit of even a smallest piece, of PEACE, let alone, "the pursuit of happiness."

In our deepest, darkest moments of time, the human spirit & most importantly - Hope.

This film provides a profound look into the struggles, the journeys', through the lives' of innocent human beings, caught falling in love, while in the crossfire of a war that seemingly, never ends.

I believe this is based on a true story. It has a great plot, storyline, with action and drama, within the entanglement of a love story. With all that life can put us through. The chance of Hope and Love leading the way, is somewhat implausible, but NOT impossible.

Somehow, HOPE &/or FAITH, offers us all, a positive thought process, becoming words, which in turn may give way to manifesting these thoughts, words and actions, into the creation of a new reality.

I'm trying, without giving too much of the movie away, to convince y'all to watch this film, as my friend convinced me. All I can say, it that I implore you for give this movie a chance. I didn't regret it. Neither will you.
