Rachel and her mother would have been perfectly safe from the lightning strike inside the car. A lightning strike will either strike the antenna of the vehicle or along the roof. The lightning will then pass through the vehicle's outer metal shell, then through the tires to the ground. A hard-topped vehicle is one of the safest places in a thunderstorm.
