Warning: Spoilers
This season was very disappointing and seemed to lack the charm and mystic atmosphere present in previous seasons. Hope is an unlikeable, one-dimensional teen and it doesn't feel like she's worth the sacrifice the family endured to keep her safe. Probably my least favorite season and felt like a different show altogether (Thanks Julie Plec).

However, this episode was refreshingly interesting. The idea of Elijah losing a 1,000 years of memories, relearning who and what he is was more complex of a concept than most of what this show had to offer. The great Elijah Mikaelson, once the noble patriarch to the most powerful family of vampires to walk the Earth, now belittled to an amnesiac breaking into a vending machine out of starvation. This scene alone was powerful and heartbreaking.

He later meets Antoinette who guides Elijah in becoming a newly revamped version of himself. He spends seven years with her, genuinely happy as he is no longer haunted by the ghosts of his past. After such a long time, he was able to get a fresh start. To begin a new life with Antoinette while leaving his dark, monstrous and tormented life behind.

This episode is bound to get mixed opinions as this show has a wider audience of teens and adolescents. This episode was a shock to the system because it was so different and unfamiliar. It took a brave leap and won as one of my all-time favorite episodes on the Originals.

Warning: Spoilers
I like the idea of them not getting Elijah back so easily but I did not like how they went about it. Elijah's post amnesia life was very generic. There were lots of changes to his mental state crammed into seconds so I have no idea who this new Elijah is as a person. The previous episodes of this seasons pained post amnesia Elijah as a completely different character, I liked that Elijah but I care not for this new new one.

while nick using the situation as an excuse to get his brother back is very much in character for him, I feel the story would have been better served if they had come to new Elijah in later episodes where they would truly need him and have something for him to do. Amnesia angle mangled, it is expected that he would figure everything out eventually but what has it done for the story, he may as well be under a spell or have his mind altered in some other way. Him knowing colors his interaction in a different light, the lighthearted moments are now somewhat tainted. The synopses of future episodes also don't look promising and the show seems to be losing the excellent momentum season 5 started off on.

maybe I was not paying enough attention but I was under the impression they were in new york when marcel bumped into them, so I fail to see what the issue was with him being in town. putting aside how needlessly confrontational and how if he really cared they would have just built their trip around Elijah or steered him in another direction in more subtle way. There maybe a flashback episode about it down the road but I doubt we will get a satisfying answer. Im also puzzled by how they expected an amnesiac to fend for himself and why they did not stop the body-count from rising. I will admit that the image of post amnesia Elijah I had built up in my head, did not have a body count and while some of the dislike towards this episode is likely from the clash between what people expected and what they got, I still think the episode itself is lacking as well.

Elijah's Story....
reddawn3295 May 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Not sure how I feel about this episode. As another wrote, this "back story Elijah" didn't match the personality of the Elijah in Klaus & Rebekah's visits. Marcel definitely could have handled that much better as well. There are millions of other ways he could have directed Elijah out of NYC. I'm glad he found love but seeing him heartless not caring about Hayley & Hope was hard. I look forward to more with Elijah because we all know one of the siblings will track him down. Probably Freya. I peeked at an upcoming episode summary & we learn more about Antoinette so maybe her past crosses with the M family or the Salvatore's. Overall, the episode was ok. Not sure about the last few seconds tho. Kinda dramatic. I don't remember what happens to an original that steps into the sun. I thought they could die that way but I guess I'm wrong bc he isn't. I'll be happy when he reunites with Hayley & Hope & remembers his love for them. At least that's what I hope happens.
