- The film narrates the impact of the Gandhian message of Non Violence worldwide.
- 2nd October 2019 the world commemorated the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. To mark this historic milestone, award winning and Emmy nominated film maker Ramesh Sharma has written and directed a 100 minutes long feature documentary that profiles the lasting legacy of Ahimsa : Gandhi- The Power of The Powerless. The Gandhian influence in some way still speaks to the conscience of the world as nations grapple with intractable problems ; as societies struggle to give the marginalized and the underserved human dignity and restore fundamental human rights. The film narrates the impact of the Gandhian message of Non Violence worldwide; how it inspired Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement in USA, the Solidarity Movement in Poland, The Velvet Revolution of Havel, and the Anti- Apartheid strife in South Africa and Nelson Mandela's fight against injustice, oppression, racism and his struggle to restore basic human rights and dignity for the coloured citizens of his country. In short the film decodes the power of Non Violence and why it remains relevant to this day. Interviews with world renowned scholars, biographers, as well as close family members of Mahatma Gandhi and Nobel Laureates such as H H The Dalai Lama, Former Polish President Lech Walesa, iconic Civil Right activists such as Congressman John Lewis and Rev James Lawson, this feature documentary, weaves rare archival footage, photographs, inspirational songs, to put together a compelling and powerful narrative of the impact of Ahimsa- Non Violence in some of the seminal political movements of the 20th century and its continuing relevance for contemporary times.
- An entire generation had been moved by the commanding moral force of Ahimsa but that infectious spirit often got lost in the dry recitation of history. New generations have problems relatin to historical icons of earlier eras. That's why a new approach was needed to breathe life and emotion into telling the inspirational story of just how Gandhi and his message of Non Violence continue to be a relevant tool for conflict resolution for the entire world.I envisaged to project Gandhi's vision of Non Violence as feature long documentary- for contemporary times, parts of which would be played out so that there is a multiplier effect in all forms of modern media- including the digital world. Non Violence was a creed followed by many, including Nelson Mandela, the Dalai Lama, Vaclav Havel, the Solidarity Movement in Poland but most importantly by the Civil Rights Movement in the USA. With a global arc as its canvas, I hoped the film would underscore the significance of Mahatma Gandhi worldwide.—rameshfilms
