Not a bad watch
jenna_sinclair4 May 2021
Unsettling and bittersweet at times, Monster created a dismantled project that errors the hell out of our comfort zones.

Nonsense. Don't believe the 8.0 rating!!!

Warning: Spoilers
This movie was not disturbing. This movie was not horrifying. This movie was not scary. This movie was not original. ***************Spoilers**************** The guy eating his own flesh while drugged, Silence of the Lambs. The cannibalistic family wearing human flesh , The Texas Chainsaw Masacre. Wanting to create a normal healthy baby, The Hills Have Eyes. No scares, no jumps. Just a lot of yawning due to unnecessary scenes. Such as the mother repeating to herself as she laid on the couch "It's all my fault...it's all my fault" for five minutes!!! I ended up yelling at the screen "I get it. It's your fault. Move on already!!" Or the lead girl playing a game where she makes up stories about people she sees walking around her job. How in depth and detailed she gets. Which I'm guessing they put in there to stretch the movie out. Which funny enough, even with those unnecessary scenes, the movie still felt rushed!!! My favorite is the lead girl getting kidnapped but doesn't scream or try to fight back. I'm guessing she must have watched this movie before she got kidnapped and fell asleep.

Unsettling horror
sophieahall25 November 2018
This is a genuinely unsettling film. There are moments of dark humour which help break the tension creates by the exceptional performances by Rod Glenn and Tracy Shaw. The story is entertaining and I would highly recommend this film.

HORRENDOUS, absolutely terrible film
jimbojames-4157212 January 2019
Ignore the good reviews, they must have been done by the cast. This film is so cringe worthy, awful acting, awful effects and an awful script. Few funny parts but they were down to the terrible acting! Swerve at all costs.

Good book adaption.

Considering the low budget and the fact it was Matt Shaws feature film directing debut, all I have to say is WELL DONE. The overall story wasn't boring and the intense scenes worked for what it was trying to accomplish. I actually enjoyed it and you could tell the cast were having a blast even though the films content was sometimes near the knuckle. But that's Matt Shaw for you ... If you know his written work then dont expect this film to be a typical run of the mill horror story this is a psychopath serial killer plot with an extra pair of whatnots. I for one enjoyed it and will watch his next film ASAP. Again well done Matt and to all who were involved.British Horror, that's all I need.

Don't be fooled by the ratings

First thing - it's a British film. That means it's full of common accents and unpleasant swearing. I could write that line ten times over to reach the minimum required. I'm English and I wish that someone would just stop these people making films. We don't all swear with every other word. Some of us can actually articulate. Some of us live in places where we might have a slight regional accent but we are actually understandable and we don't all sound 'as common as muck' and swear every other word. It would be nice if film makers showed actual people instead of mouth-breathing lip-sagging incoherent people who are unable to form words properly. As to the actual film - I couldn't get past the 'British' stereotypes, so I only managed half an hour. Note to British film makers - please stop making us all seem like illiterate, incoherent slobs. I offer, as an example, 'The Fades". It might have been good, but the constant swearing and 'gang' attitude put me off. Where is the UK equivalent to Buffy, Angel, Friends, Frasier? We don't have one. Sadly. We just have directors who seem to want to portray the UK as full of inarticulate, foul-mothed yobs. Summary: it's British - don't waste your time. 'Demons', some years ago suffered from the same unpleasant stereotypes. 'Bedlam' could have been interesting but was cancelled. I actively avoid British film. I recommend you do the same. We're rubbish.

Disgusting, Psychotic, Brilliant!
laurendownard9 December 2018
This movie was just as sick and psychotic as I expected in the best possible way! It made me cringe at some points but was a brilliant movie for it! Deffo give this a watch, and check out Matt Shaw's books after if you liked it because they're just as awesome!

Awesome Movie! Can't wait to own a copy.
MsAnnabele3 December 2018
Read the Book, Loved the Movie, can't wait to buy it & add it to my collection. I've seen it at least 5 times in less than a week, that's how much I loved it ... but then I've always loved Horror and the twisted books written by Matt Shaw and Michael Bray. When they write a book it's pretty awesome. but when they write one together it's even better. So glad one of their books is now a movie and can only hope that more will join the ranks. The dialogue is spot on, and the casting and acting is perfect, Rod Glenn is amazing as Richard. I'm not sure if it's my love of Horror movies (and books) that made me a little bit twisted, or maybe I already was, either way there were a few bits of dialogue (or a scene) where I couldn't help but laugh.

So, you are probably wondering why then didn't I give Monster a full 10 stars? It was because of a couple of scenes where there was moments of time being reflected on where bits and pieces of it was cut into another scene with a strobe-light effect. While it works perfectly for the tale (sort of anyway). I've just never been a fan of it. If it were possible, I would've only deducted a partial point, but the grading system here doesn't allow it ... so, 9 of 10 it is.

So dinner's gonna make itself tonight? (Richard to Mary)
byoubebe28 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I am a huge Shaw and Bray fan and have been waiting to finally see Monster come to life! Richard and Mary were great, I was kind of confused when Richard was on what seemed a stage speaking to an audience BUT that scene totally worked! My favorite scene was when the candles were put on the "Birthday Cake", the character came to life for me. And Danielle Harold as Sarah brought it and then some with her "back stories" of customers she was totally immersed in them. My only disappointment was that Monster didn't come off as being 7ft and hulking in the film like he does in the book. I've been on a horror movie binge for the last 2 weeks and I have to say Shaw and Bray and their excellent cast surpassed what I've seen! I was pleasantly surprised how original the movie is. Kudos to you all cannot wait for the next one Matt Shaw and Michael Bray!! Thanks guys for inviting me into your sick and twisted universe,I am HOME!!

Raw and gritty
keefnorman25 November 2018
I've loved this story from the book by Shaw and Bray. I was super excited by the amazing cast they had lined up for this and wasn't disappointed. I kind of wanted more from the monster In regards to his visual appearance but maybe costume costs made them settle for the look we got. Don't get me wrong,he still looks big and freaky and plays the part well. The main and most impressive performances are from Tracy shaw and rod Glenn. Glenn had a lot to live up to being the nasty character of Richard which he does flawlessly. Tracy is immaculate as his long suffering wife but I felt some more of the violence and evil between them from the book could have been put into the film too to really emphasise just how much of a monster Richard really is. All in all I loved it and look forward to more films by #themattshaw.

wanted more gore
slimmerthenmost25 November 2018
I saw this at a fim festival and I get that this was done on a lowbudget and that money was tight but as a lover of gore I still wanted more but I guess it wasn't that kind of movie. What I can say is that the performances were mostly good. I loved the mum and dad and I thought the monster's make up was good. It is nice to see a different kind of horror film though as jumpscares are getting borring and I have seriously had enough of remakes and zombies. After the film I found myself thinking back to it quite a lot, thinking that there are probably people out there who are actually like this!

This film is great for psychological horror. A indie film but the acting is great and some excellent performances. The effects are good and the sound effects are excellent

Unsettling
helen-633-58710015 December 2018
My title says it all. As I tell my friends about Matt Shaw's work, he makes Stephen King looks like he writes about fluffy kittens, cotton candy and playful unicorns. It's brutal, violent and extremely unsettling. You won't feel anything remotely pleasant while watching and for awhile after. The acting and plot lines are great, especially the actress playing Mary. If you love horror, a much watch!

Definitely worth the watch!
mkaz2314 December 2018
Great award winning movie. Brilliant makeup effects, great horror story, decent acting, and very suspenseful. Loved it! It does have foul language and it is a horror movie so be forewarned before you watch it. Don't watch it then leave a crappy review because of the language and gore...

WOW!!!!
jimmycricket-0062114 May 2020
Watched this after the premiere screening of Next Door and it is a completely different film! Matt Shaw said he wanted to do 3 films of 3 different genres and then top. This one is a straight up, uncomfortable horror film. Fantastic!!
