Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans.
RogerB-P3RV312 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Movie aptly encapsulates the famous John Lennon's quote "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans." Well paced, charming flick is part sci-fi, part rom-com brings home the bacon thanks to terrific performances and engaging story

Writer-director Jeremy LaLonde most assured work (feature-length) to date.

Daniel Stern is heartbreakingly good as the time traveler trying desperately to fix things before it's too late. The scene with Courtney at the lake shows what the veteran actor can achieve with proper script and believable characterization.

Australian Cleopatra Coleman perfectly cast as woman of James's dream. That voice and those lips....ooh la la.

Aspirational background score (by Ian LeFeuvre & Stephen Krecklo) grows on you.

Don't dwell on the past, don't dream about the future, just where ever you are be all there. - Jimmy

Enjoyable movie
Sergiodave20 April 2020
A really enjoyable time travel movie where a young scientist is visited by his older future self in order to persuade him not to invent time travel. Daniel Stern, famous for Home Alone, who plays the older James, steals the show, his acting is first rate and the supporting cast do their job admirably. It might be a little cliched, but I found it a warm, entertaining movie which will make you laugh.

I almost didn't watch because of the rating
phylicia15 April 2020
I usually don't waste my time on anything rated less than 6.5.users are usually on point...but this time completely wrong. 5.7? Are you kidding me...this is definitely worth higher. Maybe if you were expecting a serious sci Fi thriller then you will be disappointed, but even if you were, and were then suprises by an emotionally intelligent film with good acting then you would definitely rate it higher. So glad I didn't listen to you negative reviwers.

Pleasant movie about time travel and being true to yourself.
TxMike10 December 2020
I really enjoyed this movie, I watched it streaming on Amazon Prime.

The theme is time travel and the physics they discuss is pretty close to authentic physics. They mention CERN and the Large Hadron Collider, and not surprisingly used a theoretical physicist, a professor, as a consultant.

Younger James (actor was about 45) is consumed with developing his theories and eventual method of time travel when this older guy (actor was 61) shows up claiming to be him at an older age. He has a unique way of proving it, comparing unique markings on their Johnsons. In other movies it might have come across as too juvenile but here it worked.

So James and this new guy, "uncle Jimmy", go back and forth and create some unusual and mostly humorous situations. And of course there is a girl involved, and James must get his priorities straight. That is why his older self is there, to convince him.

Fun, entertaining movie.

Fun premise but falls into romcom trappings
Cactus-55 August 2020
It's a fun idea, and it all begins well enough but we're soon completely trapped in every standard romcom cliché. I honestly don't understand why people go through all the time and effort and costs of making a movie when you're just going to take the predictable route so many movies have done before.

A nice comedy full of lessons
mvahidalizadeh10 April 2020
One of the reasons that I love comedy genre is that they teach us valuable lessons. For example, I learned a lot from the movie . This is the story of a scientist who is obsessed with his work which is inventing the time travel. As the title shows his future version travels back to change what he did in the past. The story is very well-written. The plays are one level below the story. The usage of background music and movements of the camera could be improved. The scenes and locations are diverse. In summary, this will be a good choice for comedy fans.

Cast iron proof that it's you from the future
alex-mott10 July 2020
Charming, quirky and funny with a valid message regarding the pointlessness of worrying about the future or obssessing about the past - and never taking the time to enjoy the present. Good to see Daniel Stern again but couldn't they have found another actor to play his younger self who was the same height? Time travel 'stretches you' doesn't work, not even with Hollywood physics. Otherwise harmless, good fun and worth a watch.

Deeply Philosophical and Provocative
eric26200323 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
How would you react if someone who looks like an elder version of yourself walked in on you and told you things about what the future has in store for you? I'm sure you'll be amazed, intrigued and even a bit intimidated at the same time. And suppose he/she/they was sent here to warn you about grave dangers lurking ahead if you continue into a path where if you put yourself into a predicament and you will regret it for the rest of your life? And sure the concept of the indie film "James vs. His Future Self" may lack in originality, it still scores big with its unorthodox style with a moral message that it neither ham-fist or preachy.

Jonas Chernick plays James, an enthusiastic inventor who's in the process of creating a time traveling apparatus. All is going well for him, until a mysterious older stranger named Jimmy (Daniel Stern) claims that he his actually James from the future comes to warn him that inventing time travel is a thing he will regret inventing. If he continues to build this machine, it won't be a breakthrough in humanity, but a world where disasters could turn his world upside down. Though the disasters are not fully fleshed out, but Jimmy's words of advice seem so sincere and urgent, we are left with no choice but to believe him. The thing is James is so stubborn, he refuses to listen to him.

Then we must ask ourselves, why are bad decisions and humanity are so compatible with one another? For two simple reasons: the first, we never think about consequences and that out hunger and obsession for experiments are what drives us to beyond the boundaries. Also scientific breakthroughs become sources for fame, publicity comes with awards, accolades a place in the fields of science. Another is to dismiss the older generation who try to defy the younger generation that new inventions never work and that the better things in life are right in front of you. The older James just wants to anchor down and enjoy the better qualities in life like, friends, family and colleagues who may be more than lab partners. While young James just wants to to invent newer apparatuses and making a name for himself. When it comes down to it, who are we to judge in determining who's right or who's wrong? Should James listen to his elder self's advice and settle in the now, or should he just build something that could potentially destroy humanity? The nice thing about this movie written and directed by Jeremy Lalonde, is that we the audience have the freedoms to pick a side. Sure both Jimmy's are not entirely likable, they do the complex task of determining which Jimmy is right and which one is wrong.

Unlike the "Back to the Future" movies (nothing personal about them), where they glorify time travel and make it cool, "James vs. His Future Self" counteracts it all by saying it is not a good idea. Jimmy wants James to concentrate on getting romantically linked to fellow physicist Courtney (Cleopatra Coleman) and to treat her as an equal and not as just a mere sidekick. Eventually, James weighs down on himself and as we expect, he'll progressively open up his feeling to her and listen in on what she feels is right too.

The smaller supporting roles were just as equally entertaining. Tommie-Amber Pirie as excellent as James' sister Meredith and while Tara Spencer-Nairn (Constable Karen Pelly on "Corner Gas") is back as no nonsense Officer Walker. Frances Conroy has an interesting role as Dr. Rowley who just as enthusiastic about this time machine who at time may come off as eccentric, but also highly intelligent. Lalonde and Chernick never try to downplay the character's intellect or just find other ways for them to wallow in self-defeat. The conflicts between both Jimmy's is similar to the traditional father and son arguments and the natural chemistry both have towards one another is effective in its storytelling.

The main weaknesses here is that there are scenes that lag from time to time. And though the romance is an integral part of the movie and we hope a relationship between James and Courtney are in the future, it still slows thing down a bit. And sure there are laughs that might tickle your funny bone and then there are some scenes that are not afraid to take it down a notch. And while it may fall as another movie where the future looks bleak, it never takes a break to go off the subject. And sure it may hold itself well when it comes to sci-fi comedies, you may not really have an easy time choosing who's right or who's wrong.

Quite unbelievable even for a Time Travel plot
wwejournalist18 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I'll preface this review by saying this film isn't awful. It's watchable, it has a couple of funny moments, one or two really heartwarming spots and a brilliant performance as always from Daniel Stern.

It isn't without its problems though and there are quite a few.

For a start it's just a little bit... boring.

For a film about a time-travelling scientist not a great deal happens and it's quite slow going for large parts.

The actions of the lead character are hard to follow too. His future self comes back, tells him he needs to very specifically NOT do something lest it lead to a miserable, lonely future in a dystopian world... and yet he still presses on with doing the thing he was told not to do until a big revelation moment in the final act.

Perhaps even more unbelievable is the fact that a guy so nerdy (and presumably still a Virgin) would, when mere moments away from finally doing the deed with the girl his future self has already revealed as the love of his life, stop to write up a new theory on his chalkboard.

The film is littered with these kinds of small details that snap you out of the moment to address how unbelievable they are.

Another example is when we discover the protagonists boss has apparently created a particle collider that is allegedly 3x more powerful than the Hadron Collider at CERN... and it fits in a secret box below a coffee table.

I have to give it credit where due, the message of the film is a good one; live for the moment, don't dwell on mistakes of the past or fantasise about what might be in the future, I just think the journey there meanders a little too much.

If you like Daniel Stern you'll get something out of this, even if it's just to hear him shout 'FOR GODS SAKE LOOK AT MY CAWK' after 10 or so minutes of the opening titles.

Decent indie film
itsabacus20094 April 2020
Not what I expected, I figured there'd be more conflict in this film, but was actually very mild. The film has its moments of funny moments, but not quite on the high comedy level. For what it is, it's still a good movie; not great, but good enough. All and all, Stern was great in this movie; probably his best work in over 20 years! I hope he continues making hidden gems like this one.

Nice movie, worth watching
lwio19602 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Great little movie here. The premise is that a young scientist hell bent on creating a method of time travel ignores his girlfriend and sister ruining his life. His future self comes back to stop him and change his direction. Some good comedy moments which after the dick joke I thought oh no but it didn't go that direction at all. Well made, great acting. Definitely worth watching

only for Daniel Stern fans...
simonegallina25 April 2020
...because the embarassing main role acting is very disappointing; the premises is average, but the cast was not at the level of keeping the enterteinment high. I loved Daniel Stern, since the beginning, and I watched this B movie only for that reason. Already forgotten title.

Something new but not good
opticuscro14 March 2022
I was attracted by the theme of the film (time travel). So the film is visually not very special, otherwise you expect good special effects in time travel movies, but this is not the case here, I'm not saying they are bad, but there aren't many of them. The story definitely has potential but it is not very well presented, the poor choice of the main actor simply he does not fit. There is some light dramatic atmosphere teough film and that is not interesting and simply suffocates the film. In parts, the film is monotonous and uninteresting. I'm just not exactly thrilled, I think it could have been a lot better.

A little Indie gem
gvwln13 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
A tasty cocktail of sci-fi, romance and comedy mixed for you by Jeremy LaLonde and seemingly effortlessly delivered to you by Jonas Chernick, Daniel Stern and Cleopatra (what a name) Coleman. And of course Tommie-Amber Pirie who, just like Jonas, starred in LaLonde's How to Plan an Orgy in a Small Town. The movie is a little gem about love, life and time travel (and Schrödinger's cat). It is well edited and Jonas, Daniel and Cleopatra treat us to an excellent performance balancing perfectly on that thin line between a love story and a comedy. But what most impressed me is that this movie deals with the Grandfather Paradoxand comes up with some nice solutions for it. This paradox basically states that if you go back to a point in time before your grandfather met your grandmother and then kill him your mother will never be born an thus you will never exist. And if you never exist then who killed your grandfather? Most movies involving time travel completely ignore this paradox, like in the Terminator where Arnie gets send back to kill Connor, the future leader of the resistance. However, if Arnie was to succeed to kill Connor he would never be the future leader of the resistance so there would never have been a reason for Arnie to be send back to kill him in the first place. This movie not only deals with this paradox, it actually presents it to us (the entire universe could cease to exist) and comes up with the solution of James-from-the-future having to disappear if his actions lead to his life being better and him not having any reason to come back in the first place. So 7/10 for the movie itself and an extra 1/10 for taking care of the Grandfather Paradox.

Identical Dicks

Warning: Spoilers
Dave (Jonas Chernick) is a young aspiring Scientist who is close to becoming the Worlds First Time Traveler, and will stop at nothing to accomplish his Goal. His obsession is ruining his relationships with his co worker Girl Friend Courtney (Cleopatra Coleman) and blowing it with his Boss Dr Rowley (Frances Conroy) and sister Meredith (Tommie-Amber Pirie). While going for a late Coffee Dave encounters Jimmy ( Daniel Stern) who claims to be Dave from the Future ? Jimmy insists that Dave must not Travel thru Time because it will ruin his Life and He is there to warn him. Jimmy claims because of Time Travel he is always STUCK in Time and has a miserable Life because of it. Dave does not believe That Jimmy is really himself from the Future and makes Jimmy prove it. I saw this Film at the Santa Barbara Int'l Film Festival and both the Director /Writer Jeremy Lalonde and Star Jonas Chernick were in the audience and did a neat Q and A after ! I thought this was a really Funny Movie and before giving away anymore of a Plot that is both Sci Fi and Comedy, I just encourage you to keep an eye out for an April 2020 release. Come timetravel with me
jamesjustice-924 April 2020
What can I say - I'm a sucker for a good time travel movie. Since I was a little kid I wondered what could've happened if I would've seen myself younger, from a perspective of an older man who has already seen stuff and learned to deal with it. I know I would've wanted myself to correct the mistakes from the past so that I couldn't have ended up alone with nobody by my side but my own bad decisions that led me here, wouldn't we all? James vs. His future self is surprisingly good in terms of storytelling and narrative. It shows all there is to see in life - that they don't call it present out of nothing: it is not only a gift that we should cherish every single day but we also should be in it to witness it firsthand. Daniel Stern is absolutely fantastic in this one; for a while I didn't see him in anything and the way he handled this role kind of reminded me of the old days of Home Alone glory of his and what a brilliant actor he truly is. In short, it is a good movie with fine acting, not extraordinary but a relevant plot, masterful soundtrack and some nice aftertaste.

Whoever does not like this movie is insane. It really teaches you to just appreciate life now. Even with all this coronavirus stuff going on now, why not appreciate what we have. Our wives, families, friends, God, our own lives, etc. We have so much to be appreciative and thankful for and I think this movie just kinda takes you away out of this reality we're living in now and helps you to be more thankful. At least that's what I got out of it.

This Film Was Brilliant. It's Unlike Anything I've Seen Before.
introclusor6 April 2020
I got 30 seconds into the Trailer and knew that I had to watch this film. It really didn't disappoint. I'd put it up there with films like Super or American Splendor. There are certain films that you can enjoy but know that you could live without, this isn't one of those films.

I loved every character in this except for the younger James at certain moments because he is just so infuriating. He can be having the perfect moment and just ruin it in an instant.

The film is about love and friendship, it is a truly romantic film along the lines of Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind. It's a person torn between his life's work and the love of his life. It's got laugh out loud moments but I wouldn't call it a Comedy. It's just a great film.

I took a star off a perfect score because there was a slight moment in the film towards the end that I didn't think was necessary. It doesn't take away from the film but it felt a little forced. I loved this film though and I can see me watching it many times in the future.

So many lessons in this movie that I fear people will miss
manangasithabile18 April 2020
Other reviews will tell you exactly what the movie is about.

There are so many lessons in this movie that I fear people will miss due to our ravaging hunger and expectation to always get things that will blow our minds. No. Just no. Forget all that. Watch this movie and allow the characters to inspire you to be a better human being. This movie blew my socks off in that regard. It is a funny Rom-com and one of the most well written movies I have ever watched. Enjoy

Rom/Com

Warning: Spoilers
A great rom/com. It was slow enough to be enjoyable and long enough not to be to long. The beginning does not start of like a rom/com but by the end it was. Very enjoyable if you know before you go into it that it is a rom/com. The whole time travel story was good because normally you will have the character either in the past or the future. This was a whole new story because he stayed in the present the whole time. It would have been nice to see him actually time travel but I can see the directors went a different way. It was not a movie were you could guess the ending so I was happy I watched it. I do recommend this movie and will definitely see it again.
