Disagree on Roger and Brianna
juliejanesart14 August 2021
Roger is an extremely likable man. Those that are critical are missing the point. One: is that he is more introspective and sensitive and two: he is from a different time and doesn't belong there! That is the point. He is a fish out of water and he has gone through hell for the woman he loves. I love Jamie and his strength. But he is still a man and this time he was the one who was wrong. Brianna is the way she is because she is her father's daughter! She was not fair to Roger either but still Roger comes back to her. I have read the books and watch the show and I very much like how the characters are portrayed on the show.

Some well handled moment from a strong cast
Rob-O-Cop28 January 2019
I could see the delivery of this material being annoying, if it weren't for the pitch perfect deliveries of the cast. Jamie again deals with difficult situations in a strong compassionate and believable way. Can you imagine walking away from your young nephew to leave him with the mowhawk, I couldn't but Sam's delivery of Jamie totally sells it. Murtagh and Jocasta's talk before spoiler moment was layered and honest. plenty of depth to the characters. They bought the Roger storyline home so we can hopefully stop not really liking him and he can get on to something decent with his time. Sophie again delivered some nuanced emotions in her scenes, I'm liking her character more and more as it gets more layers and they don't get her doing stupid things. I've really enjoyed the last season, as I did seasons 2 and 3, This is an entertaining and heart felt time traveling period drama and I feel the show runners really care about the material and the viewers. I'm loving the insight sections at the end of each episode too. Can't wait till season 5. Great work everyone. This is quality television.

Incredible season finale, ending the first season set in America
Holt34429 January 2019
The whole art and props department did an incredible job at crafting such believable sets and items, extraordinary. The Mohawks having only Native Americans playing them is the best, bringing justice to the tribe. It was the season finale I wanted, lots of drama between the Mohawks and the quest to save Roger was successful in a way with twists and an interesting plot point with the native american from the future which was something I missed, the time travel aspect of the show. What is possible and how many have truly went inside the stones, I want more info! The cast did an amazing job, each one giving great and believable performances, ultimately giving us some quality drama.

The overall season and production design have been great, emmy worthy. It's again a well thought out plot that is character driven and slow paced but it works perfectly because of the ensemble cast and characters that we've followed throughout the multiple seasons, we know them but we get to see other sides of them. With the characters now living in America, we get to see beautiful scenery and sets that are mostly hand crafted, you get immersed of the realism of the sets, really feeling like a town or Mohawk camp. Switching the focus to Bree and Roger, showing their lives and the whole story arc with them time traveling to 1770 to Claire and Jamie was what made it an incredible season for me. Having Stephen Bonnet as the recurring villain worked perfectly, the actor's performance was great and I hope he will return. Overall a great season filled with great drama, cinematography, music and acting. Superb.

Thank you for making this the most beautiful, satisfying episode I could imagine! Even the cliffhanger ending will make such a great start to season 5 which according to IMBD, shows all episodes airing in this year!!! Bring it on!

Just mind blowing

Warning: Spoilers
What a bloody brilliant episode.

I laughed and cried and then watched it straight away again to laugh and cry all over again.

The directing and music to accompany the most dramatic scenes made this episode. The acting was superb, especially Richard Rankin ... he finally got to shine this season.

Murtagh and Jocasta 😂... didn't see it coming.

I could go on and on but I will stop now lol.

Well done outlander team. You are superb.

Wonderful TV, but lacks in comparison to the book
lkpickett28 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Yes, I know. Everyone compares the show to the book. And I know full well that they have to make certain changes in order for it to work on screen. I also have enjoyed the Murtaugh storyline overall throughout the season, but it has gotten in the way of the wonderful moments that the book has. Roger meeting his son and swearing a blood oath: not there. It was replaced with the British arriving and giving Jamie the note about the regulators, something that doesn't happen until Book 5, but I get they want to keep people interested. Some other things were changed about Roger and Brianna's storyline that made it suffer a bit, but it overall was enjoyable.

Bottom line: this was a wonderful finale but after finishing the book, this just wasn't satisfying. But since that's the point of it, them wanting people to watch season 5, I guess it did its job correctly.

Man of Worth?
Just-A-Girl-1415 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Jamie, young Ian, Fergus and Murtagh are all men of worth! The only man without any worth is Roger! I can't stand this indecisive, unreliable, whiny, annoying guy!!! Brianna on her own is fine but Roger is insufferable! Yes... No... Everything... Nothing... Come on! Why won't you grow a pair?! As far as I'm concerned, it's his fault she was raped! You do not leave the woman you married and JUST vowed (like five seconds ago) to stay with in sickness and in health in the middle of nowhere in the middle of your wedding night because of a stupid fight. This is NOT the way a real man would act. He saw the dangers on his way. People get killed so easily. I mean, isn't that the reason he followed her in the first place? I can't stand the sight of him! I was absolutely outraged when he gave Brianna an ultimatum to marry him at the festival. What kind of immature behavior is this? If you really love someone you don't do it. You give them the chance to think for themselves, to make their own decisions, to process their own feelings and most of all you respect them. I'm binge watching the show so I'm moving on to season five but I looked on IMDb and it seems he is in every single episode. Huge disappointment for me! I never read the books so part of me hoped Brianna would find her own Jamie Fraser or at least a man of worth like Fergus.

Also, btw, the ages do not match. Fergus should have been older than Roger which he clearly isn't. The actor that plays Roger is actually 7 years older than the actor that plays Fergus. I just wish Roger would get much less screen time! There so many other characters that I'd love to see more of! Fergus for example is one of them! We barely got to see him this season! Hopefully They'll use him more!

Brianna is entirely unlikeable
teresataurima1 March 2021
Ok, so this opinion has been formed over the entire season, not just the finale. She's entitled, bratty and obnoxious. I've read the books and I get that she has a fiery personality or whatever but the girl on my screen is just waaay less likeable than book Brianna. Plus we're meant to believe that Jamie and Claire can have a brown eyed daughter? I can't describe enough how much I dislike every entitled and self important word that Brianna utters. Yeuch!

Comparison of the book and show
amanda_parsons28 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I have to agree with the other review about the comparisons. It is nice to see Murtagh, but he often mangles otherwise nice moments from the book.

It's nice they attempted to keep things somewhat on point regarding Roger and Jamie's storyline, but I prefer the book's events. Jamie arrives at the village with Ian and Claire. The women go into a separate hut where Claire discovers the meaning behind the stone and then the women just talk it out. Ian is the main man and he falls for a woman there and that's why he chooses to stay. Jamie is able to trade for Roger and Jamie leaves peacefully with Roger and Claire. There seems to be an opening for a possible run in with Ian if they ever happen to be in the same area.

Jamie does expect a quick answer from Roger and Claire does ask him to give Roger a moment. Roger is told everything and he does choose to be with Brianna. They all go to live on Fraser's Ridge where it's a bit awkward for all involved, but eventually they find a way to make it work. The show's version is more uplifting and cinematic.

Overall, I thought they did a great job.

An ending with everything
cbeer2530 January 2019
I LOVED this episode! The number of loose ends they managed to tie up and then still leave us on a cliffhanger wanting more? Genius!

I haven't read all of the books but I am aware that some people who have are displeased with this episode and season as a whole. So, to those people I will say this: stop whinging! They've made adjustments where they needed to and if you would open your mind you would see that what they've achieved is some really beautiful story telling. I'm so glad we have this story and these actors to bring it all to life and it saddens me that there is a small group of people being very loud who could potentially threaten the next two seasons.

The journey back takes 2 months right?
savalot8726 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
So I'm just a little confused, if the journey back from the Mohawks takes 2 months, it took longer that that for Roger to make up his mind? Also, There doesn't seem to be any chemistry between him and Brianna, there relationship is hard to watch. Need more Claire and Jamie.

What a beautiful season finale
ravmeltt28 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
There were some beautiful moments and some very sad moments. Spoilers ahead.

I cried when they left Ian with the Mohawks. He's so grown on me and such a sweet lad. And when he went through the gauntlet and started to laugh with the Mohawks, I laughed with him and cried at the same time.

I couldn't believe that Roger refused to go with them and wondered what happened to him, but then to see him come in the end and join Brianna and call the child his son, was so touching.

I can't believe Murtaugh getting it on with Aunt Jocasta. The dirty devil {laugh).

I never read the books so everything is new and strange to me so I'm glad for that.

I'm going to re-watch episode 1 of season 1 just for a recap, but can'[t wait til they put season 5 on Netflix. I may have to find another way cause it's too long to wait.

An Up and Down Season Ends with an Up and Down Finale
jmansmannstjohnslrev29 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Man of Worth is not a bad finale. It would be disingenuous to say otherwise. But like any finale, it is the culmination of everything that has come before it earlier in the season and so while it does have some great moments, it is missing many of the themes that made it's source material so great. Among the good are Ian's coming of age moment in staying with the Mohawk, Brianna and Roger's reunion (at least the season ends by finally giving us a Roger that resembles the one in the books) and Murtagh's soiree with Jocasta (makes a lot of sense there would be something there considering Murtagh's feelings for Jocasta's sister).

But, there is too much missing from it as well. I think the Mohawk storyline as a whole was overdone and really set back the flow of the season and took too much focus away from the other storylines. The Mohawk scenes in the finale were largely (except for Ian's decision) just sloppily done. Otter Tooth particularly gets shafted as his story is greatly desensitized for the tv series. In the book, his plan was much more realistic. He wasn't out to just indiscriminately kill white folks (probably that plan wouldn't work so well for the natives), but rather to get the Indians to unite together and gain more power in trade and commerce. His goal was to actually travel further back in time and get the native peoples to contain white advancement by refusing to give over land, and trade for weapons that could be used for defense. It was a shame to see the nuance get taken away and Otter Tooth to be merely some Native American terrorist.

The other glaring weakness in this episode and the second half of Season 4 as a whole is the loss of fatherhood as a major theme. Particularly, I think it was entirely unacceptable for the tv series not to have Claire and Jaime deliver Brianna's baby. It is a moving scene and more importantly, it is the scene where Brianna and Jaime reconcile. In short, the tv series never had enough of the ghost of Frank Randall. He was alluded to in earlier episodes but was never the focus. It's understandable that the show would want to show Brianna and Roger's adventure but Jaime's conflict with the ghost of Frank Randall was such an important piece of the novel, was such a driving force in Jaime's psyche and his own measure of self-worth that it was a shame to see it get the lack of treatment that it did, especially since in the book, Frank teaches Brianna to survive in the wild and to shoot with the understanding that Brianna may one day go to find Jaime.

So, in summation, Man of Worth is not a bad episode, but it also has quite a bit of wasted potential where the showrunners put too much of a focus on the wrong parts of the story.

New Themes Added, Some Remain the Same, Some Themes Abandoned
selketentr27 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I've read almost all of the books (I did not read The Fiery Cross). In my opinion, the writers did a great job of adapting the books to TV. New story lines have been introduced that will prolong the life of the series. Favorite characters have survived and their circumstances suggest very interesting situations. Im looking forward to seeing more of Jocasta and Murtagh. In the books Jocasta had an affair with her slave, Ulysses. Murtagh died at Colladen. John Grey is a favorite and I look forward to his story and his son, William. A lot of this episode was close to the book. Ian has been traded. Roger returns to Brianna. Brianna gets to confront Bonnet. Roger gets to inflict pain on Jamie as payback. The stone Claire found actually saves them in the book. In this story, the stone almost gets them killed. The writers kept some things, abandoned some things, and added others. Most importantly, they tied up all loose ends. I'm looking forward to the new season.

The straw that saved the camels back
doomprodigy29 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Finally something happened of relevance. I think the writers of the show took a different route with this series. I started slow, went off on tangents, had plenty of irrelevance and then in the last episode did ABSOLUTELY nothing.

The season finale came in and was a wonderfully crafted episode with only a few gripes. We saw twists and turns and birth which was beautiful. They saved the show with this episode but only by the skin of their teeth.

Going into the next season the writers need to really make a decision about where to go. To commit to the relationship between Brianna and Roger and pass the torch from Clare and Jamie.

To bring it home and make it about Jamie and Claire and their quest to succeed in the old America.

Or just cancel the show.

The episode was feel good but left nothing for us to think about going into the next season, unless you consider that Bonnet probably escaped the explosion of the last episode.

Good finale - but some doubts over this season
kaspercmhermans9 November 2019
Good finale, but overal the season was a bit 'boring'. Don't get me wrong, I liked every episode and I don't mind a more quite season once in a while. But it were all like 'smaller' problems. I missed like a bigger purpose of it. Ofcourse, it were all small problems preventing the same thing (them being together as a happy family), but still... Also I've got some problems with the time. During the season like a-year-and-a-half has passed - I think - but is somehow doesn't feel like that. And I don't wanna sound yealous or anything. But for a woman halfway here fifties her hair should be way more grayish. Apart from those few grey hairs, they don't seem to bother that she has aged a lot since season 1. Jamie more of the same.

Get rid of Roger and Brianna
chelscross24 January 2020
I love this series. It's beautifully written and the acting is amazing. But Roger is a buffoon and Brianna is a whiny weak sad character. Their relationship doesn't even feel natural. Brianna treats Jamie like crap and Roger has his head stuck up . As far as I'm concerned they're not equipped for the old world. I could definitely do without them. Would be a higher rating if we didn't have to deal with their stupidity.

Meh
heydiddlediddle00728 January 2019
This was marginally better than last week, I wonder if anyone from the cast or crew read these reviews. Sam and Cait made this series come to life, they brought these fanatastic characters to reality, gained fans from around the world and now they can watch it fizzle and die a slow and painful death. Season 3 was just ok and I'd hoped that this season would bring it back to life but sadly the Outlander world needs CPR. I won't invest in next season because it'll be a recurring disappointment

At least it's over.
garzamom29 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I see articles trying to prop up the changes made from the books, that somehow they improved the story line. They don't. I read the books until the Brianna/Roger thing started taking center stage. I get it, the story has to keep moving. I didn't and don't find these two compelling on any level. The trist between Murtaugh and Jocasta what the hell was that about? Gratuitus sex for the boomers? I'm 75, I don't want to watch that! Unless the story swings back to Jamie and Claire in a big way next season, I'm about done.
