Habeas Corpus: The Making of 'Psycho Cop Returns' (2017)

*** 1/2 (out of 4)

Fun forty-two minute documentary that takes a look at the making of PSYCHO COP RETURNS. This documentary features interviews with director Adam Rifkin, screenwriter Dan Povenmire, actors Robert R. Shafer, Melanie Good, Barbara Niven, Nick Vallelonga, Rod Sweitzer, and Miles Dougal and editor Peter Schink. If you're a fan of the film then you'll certainly be entertained by this film as it does a very good job at covering every aspect of the production. It's interesting to see that the film happened rather quickly because the director was waiting for Charlie Sheen to become available for THE CHASE. From here we learn about the casting, the original plan for five movies and of course the nudity and gore. Every aspect of the film is covered in a nice way so there's no question that fans are going to enjoy the stories and learning more about the film.

Nifty retrospective documentary

Warning: Spoilers
This 43-minute retrospective documentary provides an enjoyable and informative glimpse into the making of the low-budget slasher opus "Psycho Cop Returns." Director Adam Rifkin discusses how he came up with the pseudonym Riff Coogan with the specific intention of making certain grindhouse-type movies for both fun and practice. Robert R. Shafer talks about his acting process and the malevolent glee he brought to the character of Joe Vickers as well being signed to a five picture deal that alas didn't pan out. Editor Peter Schink reveals that he cut the whole picture in only five weeks and really found his groove as an editor after splicing together the striptease sequence. Moreover, we also learn that Barbara Niven auditioned using her real name, Julie Strain persuaded screenwriter Dan Povenmire to draw a dirty picture of her having sex with Bart Simpson, Rod Sweitzer was originally considered to play Mike, and the Rodney King-style climatic beating of Joe Vickers had to be shot twice. Recommended viewing for fans of the film.
