Treating serious matters in a lighter vein
georgioskarpouzas24 July 2019
Having watched the first movie I decided to give a chance to the second bearing in mind that often the continuation of a successful recipe does not live up to the original movie. This observation was confirmed although the second film is still very funny. I have to admit that it is full of commonplaces and cliches to an annoying degree. The truth is that you laugh and that is the aim of a comedy. There is no originality in the jokes, they are as commonplace and trite as you could imagine but I found myself laughing most of the time.

The plot is simple. The bourgeois elderly couple strives to keep their four daughters in France while the latter under the instigation of their foreign husbands seek to pursue their luck outside their country to destinations linked with the origins of their spouses. The lengths to which the paterfamilias and his wife go to incite their daughters and grooms to remain in France inspire the main comedy effect of the film.

It is important to note that the scenario is very apt concerning current affairs in French society so that anyone closely following developments in French social reality will recognize imediately that important and "heavy" matters dividing national opinion such as immigration, integration and tolerance towards Muslim practices or legalization of homosexual marriage are treated in a lighter vein and produce ample laughter despite their insoluble and often tragic aspects in real life.

I recommend this movie which without being a masterpiece will appeal to those with a vivid interest in the dilemmas of postmodern multicultural society who are ready to put aside for a moment the often tragic connotations of those matters and accept the comic element which is inherent even in the most serious aspects of human social coexistence.

Not as good as the original, but still worth seeing

Warning: Spoilers
"Qu'est-ce qu'on a encore fait au bon Dieu?" or "Serial (Bad) Weddings 2" (what a horrible title!) or "Monsieur Claude 2" is a new French movie, very recent release that runs for under 100 minutes and was directed by Philippe de Chauveron and he was also in charge of the script together with Guy Laurent. Maybe these two names or the title are enough to make you understand that this is the official sequel to a highly successful French comedy movie from 5 years ago. Well commercially successful lets say, I am not sure if critics liked it that much. But I know I did back then and it was among my very favorite comedy films from that year. What I liked most about it was the political incorrectness really because that is something we don't get very often, especially not here in Germany where filmmakers are 100% aware that if they do not make a film that story-wise or at least ending-wise goes in hand with the mainstream media and the government's take on the refugee crisis, they are in deep deep trouble. Anyway, I am drifting a bit away, so lets take a look at this movie we got here. Like I wrote in the title, I do believe it is slightly inferior to the first film, but I still enjoyed it most of the time. This has to do most of all with Christian Clavier, who I like a lot usually and I was glad to see him voice Astérix in the new animated movie, but also that he is back for this one we have here. I think the rest of the cast also return, even though I must admit that while liking French films I was not too aware of any of the actors(' names) in here. So the one that stayed most memorable to me was the actress who played the pregnant character because she was downright gorgeous. So in the first film it is all about Mr. Claude's daughters bonding with men from all kinds of different backgrounds (a Jew, a Muslim, a Black man and an Asian). And they are of course also all still together in here. The key idea in this film is that each and every one of these four couples decide to leave France and move away to Israel, Algeria, China and India. But yeah, let me say this was not the greatest idea honestly. It did not feel too realistic that all of these would decide so independently at the same time and when they eventually dismiss the idea (due to Mr. Claude's involvement admittedly), it did not feel too authentic that really all of them would change their minds. Also pay attention to how it is initially always the men who have the idea, but the women carry them with them. And how it is also all the men who lose the idea first again. Not the greatest approach to strong female character writing.

In addition to this, there is focus on one of the men's father and how his daughter has a lesbian marriage coming up that the father, a devout African Christian has no idea is about to happen. Well, this story did not work out entirely either. I mean come on. There is a long-distance relationship going on that hardly anybody knows something about and they decide to marry? Really? Because they can now thanks to progress in gender equality ? I don't think so. So the heart and soul of this film story-wise were really not too good. Luckily, this movie instead works as a sketch comedy, occasionally again thanks to its lack of interest in political correctness. The best example is the guy who few from the Taliban who makes for some hilarious scenes every time he is on, be it with the Asian guy and the saw, the special belt and Mr. Claude or the first time hea appears to Mr. Claude's wife. Good stuff there. Some stereotypes are included again as well, one for each man: The Jew gets the financial success part, sadly he really lacks in this department. The Muslim lawyer gets the women wanting to fight for their rights to wear a burqa. The Asia is constantly scared because rich Asians are the primary target group for criminals (allegedly) these days and the African guy gets his Bollywood career and idea that he just won't get cast by anybody because even white actors are taking away his roles, such as Othello. Or Omar Sy of course. All this was kinda funny and made for some solid running gags. This film was at its best when it was at its most shameless. Don't pay too much attention to the key plots or expect great story lines. It is more about the situational comedy that can be appreciated here. Even there sometimes they go more than just a bit over the top, but it's easy to laugh about nonetheless. The ending indicated that there will most likely not be a third Mr. Claude movie, but we will see. Probably the commercial success of this second film is nowhere near the level of the first anyway, so they will dismiss this idea. Overall, you could say that with entering retirement. Mr. Claude is almost less significant in this film as well compared to his 4 daughters' men. Which is not always a bad thing. Pascal N'Zonzi deserves a special mention as overall he is almost more fun than Clavier this time and that means quite something coming from me as I am a Clavier fan like I said earlier. I think this should be all then. If you liked the first film, then go watch this one. It is pretty decent overall. If you haven't seen the first, which probably only applies to people outside France, then watch these two as a double feature together. Both aren't that long, so it would be less than 3.5 hours overall. Mr. Claude 2 gets a thumbs-up from me, but not a highly enthusiastic one this time. Oh and by the way you can clearly see it is a family movie on several occasions that involve the slightest bit of violence or use of weapons that they were very concerned to keep this film as harmless as possible to make sure young audiences won't be kept away. C'est tout.

Funny...

"Serial (Bad) Weddings 2" is a Comedy movie and the sequel of "Serial (Bad) Weddings" of 2014, in which we watch the Verneuil family getting into a new adventure since all of their daughters decide to leave France with their spouses.

Since I had already watched the first movie I knew what to expect from the second. I enjoyed it because it had many funny scenes and a good combination of actors/actresses that helped it become interesting despite its simple plot. The direction which was made again by Philippe de Chauveron was very good and he followed the same successful steps of the first movie. For one more time the interpretation of Christian Clavier who played as Claude Verneuil was very good in many moments he was hilarious. Some other interpretations that have to be mentioned were Pascal N'Zonzi's who played as André Kofi, Frédéric Chau's who played as Chao Ling and Noom Diawara's who played as Charles Kofi. In conclusion, I have to say that "Serial (Bad) Weddings 2" is a nice comedy movie and I highly recommend everyone to watch it because I am sure that you will have a great time and you will laugh a lot.

This sequal to serial (bad) weddings is better in my opinion then the first one. not only do they keep the jokes over the cultures and races in france but the film is just funnier , also there are better lines in this film. the actors do a wonderful job. both Christian Clavier and Pascal N'Zonzi are great and have good moments in the film.

Not funny at all
esreverse30 April 2019
I loved the first part, which was really funny and had a decent story. The second one tries to be funny with really stupid and flat jokes and stories that are just absurd. What a waste of time.

I love french comedies
tonimanganelli30 May 2019
The humour obviously might be not everybodys cup of tea, but I love the s.o.h. of french comedies and especially of this director. In this sequel the actors are really hilarous again. Of course it is not as great as the very successful first part from five years ago but it is definitely enjoyale enough to be worth watching for everybody who likes french comedies. It gives you a lot of good laughs. Get some popcorn and have fun with the situation comedy and the running gags full of political incorrectness.

So bland it hurts
baunacholi-861597 March 2020
No there's no spoiler as there's no story or anything interesting to talk about. A ray of flat jokes - and I use the expression joke very loosely -combined with stereotypes which I personally felt as an European offensive. The only great thing (hence the 2nd star) is the beautiful Manson and garden, thanks for the location agent finding this!

Very very confusing ending
steve-marcus266 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
For starters, not funny. The first one had me laughing out loud, this one barely had me smiling.

Now, I'm not sure who taught these writers how to write, but if you're rooting for the brothers, then why make the in-laws win? I walked out of the theater disappointed.

As a son-in-law having made such a move, and having overcome multiple challenges laid out by my own in-laws, this story made me feel sorry for these boys.

Other than that, the acting was pretty spot on, credible, and we'll interpreted.

Don't look at the ratings this movie is great. I was a little sceptical about second part when it was announced but it's good as the first one. Very funny.

Huge disappointment
bingyusandor4 October 2019
Loved the first part, but this second was not funny at all, not even the actors could save the flat storyline. A good example how political correctness kills the film industry, seemingly not only in Hollywood.

Cliché-riddled French social propaganda piece
adrianovasconcelos14 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The first half of this French film is passably good, with some funny punchlines and plenty of clichés about a white Catholic family, with four daughters, all married to minority husbands. The second half is a rehash of the clichés.

Clavier has some very good moments in that first half, but even he fades in the second half. The actress playing his wife also has some good lines, the daughters are all beautiful, and that accounts for the two stars I give this film.

Direction is pedestrian, cinematography substandard, very poor script.

The actors playing the minority husbands are substandard, and they get no help the very underdeveloped characters they portray and from a flat script.

But the worst and, to me, unforgivable, part in Qu'est-ce qu'on a encore fait au Bon Dieu?, is that it is a very primitive and populist piece of social propaganda.

Supposedly, these minorities are very welcome and get to do what they like in loving French families -- even the biggest ignoramus about France knows that it is not like that in any country on the planet Earth.

The inner circle jokes about French social security, French President Macron, France's social and economic problems, and racial divides certainly mean something to the French, and in the end France is a wonderful country that all want to come back to, despite the high taxes, national health service deficiencies, joblessness, etc

And last, but far from least, inevitably it is money that saves the day in the end. The rich parents in law throw away good money after bad to keep their beloved minority sons in law in France.

In a nutshell, at best this film is for the French only, but I doubt that the majority of free-thinking French citizens see it as a reflection of their great nation.

Sooo sad. I really liked the first film but part 2 is not worth watching. Maybe it is better if you are from France yourself?!

Family problems
mogensenf22 June 2023
This is the second film in a French series of three up till now, made 2014, 2019 and 2022.

The center of the film is the couple Claude and Marie Vernueil (played by Christian Clavier and Chantal Lauby) a Catholic pair. As the first (and better) film showed, the four daughters of the couple has been married with four men from different places. From Algeria, Israel, China and the Ivory Coast. Now the marriages are going okay, but around the same time, it seems that the four men wants to go home to start their own business. Not that satisfied with life in France. The wifes agree, and soon the Verneuils are told. Is that a goodbye to the four couples and their grand children?

The first part of the movie is slow and not that funny. But the last part is better. The Verneuils will try to make the big family stay together in France.

Sooooo Funny .... Christian Clavier is supreme. The film starts slow. I thought: it's going to disappoint, not funny like the first film. But then boom. Almost died laughing. Thank you 😊

Fantastic Fun

The multicultural cast come together for another laugh fest at social mores.

I loved this as much as the original film. The sons-in-law are brilliant, made all the better that they were able to get the who cast back for this.

The film doesn't preach, but it does try to show the ludicrous and crass side of a lot of France, which, for a multicultural country is still, surprisingly, very racist, and this film ridicules them by using comedy to highlight this, hopefully the the rest of the world can understand this too, and there is the homophobic African father too to laugh at when he discovers his daughter is getting married. Fair play to all involved.

And finally, I love Claudes patriotism, he knows there are problems, but he tries to embrace them, he went around the world and came back still believing in France. I wish I could feel the same about Britain, but the fact is, whilst we have a Tory self serving Government any patriotism I felt for the country died a long time ago.

More Claude, more kids, more everything
kosmasp25 July 2022
Ms. Claude - or as the english/international title suggest bad weddings. That reminds me of what Germany did to the Taken title with Liam Neeson. In Germany at least those movies right here are called Ms. Claude and his daughters - which I think is more apt than the bad weddings tag - but that's me.

I thought I had seen this, but apparently I had not. And I remembered or checked for it, because the new (third) part is out in cinemas. Good thing this was streaming and I could watch it to be up to date. The movies are connected after all. You get a lot of characters that are reprising their roles (the actors who portray them as well luckily).

This time around, it seems that France is not good enough anymore - no pun intended. And something Claude works on, to keep the "sons" in France ... the same ones he was not really approving of in the first part. Don't overthink it, it is a comedy ... and it does work. Even if the other parts are funnier ... this still is good enough to say the least.
