Renowned writers Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais have gone posh. Henry IX is a satirical take at the Royal family in modern Britain. King Henry IX (Charles Edwards) has been on throne for almost 25 years, in a loveless marriage to a Scandinavian ice queen (Sally Phillips) and with grown up children has hit some kind of a mid life crisis.

In the first episode King Henry has grown tired of a life of duty and public service. The palace has even hired a public relations expert to liven up his image. An encounter with pretty young florist makes him think about his future, he wants to abdicate.

The writers of Porridge in some ways have painted the king as trapped. He might had been born into privilege but at the same time hemmed in with rules and duty.

However despite a top notch cast and given the writing talent, this lacked sharpness, freshness and laughs from Clement & La Frenais more vintage work. However after a lukewarm opening episode, I am willing to give the other episodes a chance.
