Pilot

The Pilot moved at a breathtaking pace, introducing plenty of elements and musical numbers. It was all just a little inconceived.

Star (Jude Demorest) is a street wise white girl moving from foster home to another. She is friends with a rich black girl, Alexandra (Ryan Destiny) from New York who Skype each other but have never met. Alexandra's father is actually in the music business and successful.

Star needs to find her half sister Simone (Brittany O'Grady) who is living in an abusive foster home. Star manages to get the details from Social Services and arrives in time to stab the foster father in the back who is on top of her in bed. Once she rescues Simone, they meet up with Alexandra. All three of them head to Atlanta with hopes to become a hot girl group.

In Atlanta is a woman who runs a hair salon who once knew Star and Simone's drug addict mother. Carlotta (Queen Latifah) was once in a group with their mother. She wrote letters to child services to find where the girls were, Star came across the letters. Carlotta knows that Star and Simone had angelic voices when they were young but wary of the dangers that come when you go looking for fame. However she puts all of them up, probably knowing the two girls had a rough time of it.

Pretty quickly the trio get together with a producer Jahil Rivera (Benjamin Bratt) at a strip club and are performing at a mansion of a football star. Jahil it seems is no random stranger, he also knew Star and Simone's mother.

It all feels rather ridiculous and kind of messily pasted together. The singing and dancing numbers such as the one at the mansion just felt false.
