Following comments by Peter Dinklage alleging the original film depicted the dwarfs in a negative light, Disney announced on January 25, 2022, that they would approach the characters differently, while also consulting members of the dwarfism community. Many fans of the original including Dylan Postl pointed out that many of Dinklage's remarks were incorrect. For one, he said the dwarfs lived in a cave. They actually lived in a cottage and worked in a diamond mine.
Benj Pasek and Justin Paul of La La Land (2016), The Greatest Showman (2017), and the Tony award winning Broadway musical "Dear Evan Hansen" wrote original songs for this movie.
According to Entertainment Weekly, this film was originally conceived in 2012 as a martial arts retelling called "The Seven," in which the seven dwarfs were instead monks who use their wisdom to train a young woman to defend herself and fight against a powerful evil. The film was shelved after two other Snow White retellings, Mirror Mirror (2012) and Snow White and the Huntsman (2012), released in the same year.
In October 2016, a live-action adaptation of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was announced. The script was written by Erin Cressida Wilson; while Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who also wrote new song material for the live action adaptation of Aladdin (2019), will write new songs for the project. By September 2019, Marc Webb had signed on as director. Principal photography was originally scheduled to begin in March 2020 in Vancouver, but filming was delayed to spring or summer 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Filming wrapped on July 8, 2022.
