This is the sequel of a sort to a very successful short film which went inside the Gathering to meet people who are fans of ICP and paint their faces like macabre clowns. That film worked very well with its lack of judgement but yet its very steady eye which allowed the viewer to draw their own mixed conclusions. This sequel instead focuses more tightly on one person, and uses him as a way into the community. Alexander Perkins (aka Less Legs) is in a wheelchair and we join him for some time before he goes to join with this community of Juggalos.
The result is a film that at times looks like it wants to do a real character piece on Perkins, but then at others seems content to observe the people at the events and in the parking lots. It is a mixed result. The more neutral crowd stuff is less interesting and insightful than it was in the first film, with fewer interviews/discussions on camera and more just general joshing around. In the more focused elements we do get some good material but at the same time we never get through Perkins into something beyond his very open surface. That he is so open does mean that we get some of interest and reflection, but again the film takes a non- aggressive path, and it only gets what he is comfortable with.
In neither aspect of the film did I feel like there was a greater truth, or something that resonated with me. I have liked a lot of Dunne's films, but this one didn't work for me and I didn't seem like a good call to have gone back.
