- [describing the Severn Bridge]
- Dan Cruickshank: It has an inherent beauty, doesn't it? Between the towers is suspended this cable which takes this particularly strong characteristic form of a parabolic curve. And I suppose part of the great success of the Severn Bridge truly is the fact it is simply beautiful, like a great work of art.
- Mike Parsons: It looks right to people who don't know anything about engineering. They can see how it works. It's like hanging washing on a line - you can see how the washing is supported by the thin wire. It is a fact that if it looks right, it's a good indication that maybe you *have* got it right.
