Good, But A Lot Left Out

One of the delights of this novel series is the complexity of the detective work. This adaptation is very good in many ways. The cast is absolutely excellent. But so much detail is skipped to fit it into two episodes, that they actually had to change major incidents to make it all fit--they just didn't have time to build up the intricate jigsaw that's in the book. I'm not even sure I've had understood this without having read the book first. The motivations of the characters, the way the thing is solved is just too rushed. Shame, as in so many ways this is the books brought to life.

In the book, the whole case hinges around the girl Kelsey, who's leg gets sent to Robin. Kelsey is a 'trans disabled' girl (she believes she should only have one leg and wants one cut off). She wants Cormoran to help her take her own leg off, as she's been told that's how he lost his. Leaving out this whole thread really weakens the story, as it's Strike's horror at this connection that sparks his interest in the case, and leads him eventually to solving it.

Still, I highly recommend these adaptations to anyone who likes the books. Strike and Robin are fantastic.
