Sex & Nudity

  • If you go into the town Valentine, you can see an adult man getting spanked by his mum and he keeps telling her to do more because he says he's been a naughty boy.
  • There is a feral man in the forest who is completely naked. Both penis and butt are visible, this is only seen once and it's not shown in high detail.
  • Some references and jokes. Humorous and very mild.
  • Two of the characters wear slightly revealing clothing.
  • A man threatens to cut another man's testicles off.
  • You may accidentally interrupt two people having sex. Nothing sensitive is shown it is very quick and can be avoided. This can be avoided and you never see it again afterwards.
  • A couple can be found while free roaming. They're revealed to be siblings and they flirt with each other, referencing an incestuous relationship. No actual sex or nudity, but can be uncomfortable.
  • There is no sexual content in the open world except for male nudity but it is all censored out.
  • Inappropriate content can be removed and can be avoided. But it is hard to avoid because you may not know it's coming.
  • In a mission you will open a door to a man using the toilet. Only part of his butt is visible, Very mild.
  • If you go back to the braithwaites after it burned down you will see a naked woman's dead body, butt is shown.
  • The first red dead redemption has way more sexual content and Nudity
  • John's wife is mentioned to have been a prostitute.
  • A man is threatened to have his penis cut off. Two people take his pants off. The camera is either set above the waist, or to the side, so we don't see anything. It never actually happens and it's played for dark humor.
  • In the mission 'A quiet Time' there is a sequence where you might walk in on a couple having sex. No male nudity, but the side of the females breast, and her butt can briefly be seen. This lasts about 5 seconds. While this is avoidable, it's required to see to get a gold metal on the mission.
  • Male horses have genitalia. The devolopers went as far as causing their genitals to shrink when you enter frigid areas of the game.
  • Animal Incest is mentioned at some point, but worded in a way that younger audiences may not catch.
  • If you take a bath, you have the option to accept a deluxe bath, which is a women coming in, and washing you. When you are done, she kisses you on the forehead.
  • (This information is false; Nudity can not be turned off.)
  • In a loot box, the player can obtain a weapon and there are some erotic photos of women wearing revealing clothes if not at all.
  • It is implied that Bill is bisexual, due to several remarks. Easy to miss.
  • In free roam, there is a character that lures you into his house to knock you out. Arthur/John fades in and out of consciousness and grunting can be heard. Rape is implied.
  • In the theatre during a show, a fire breather acts and dances erotically while dressing skimpily. Completely optional to see and the player can leave at any time.
  • A side quest shows a man who draws married naked women, but the quest is optional and the painting aren't very realistic.
  • Overall, a mild to moderate amount of sexual content/nudity. However, this game is huge, and it is all missable/avoidable.
  • In a rare interaction, a man asks you to hunt down a swindler who "sold him medical made from 'rhino horn' to cure an ailment he has" players with some knowledge on the topic (along with some in game hints) will recognize that the condition is erectile disfunction.

Violence & Gore

  • The most gory rockstar game by far. You can dismember arms, legs and heads. You can stab civilians and enemies. Horses can also be dismembered but only the legs, and only with explosives and shotguns.
  • Players can kill their enemies with melee weapons, as well as kill them with shotguns, projectiles or explosives. You can also drag NPCs behind horses with a lasso this can be comical.
  • People can be set on fire by campfires and other flammable sources.
  • There are sometimes public executions in towns. Can be missed, but most of them include hanging.
  • Pretty violent game, and cannot be censored through the settings
  • The most brutal scenes in the game depict Arthur killing people with a knife. This is brutal and the sound effects add to the overall graphic nature.
  • Most ranged weapons are shot from far away so it is hard to see.
  • In the city, there can be times where you see violence.
  • In one side mission outside Saint Denis you can find a man profusely bleeding from his arm, and you can take him to the Doctor. The Doctor claims that the only way to save the man is through amputation. However you can walk away before the amputation. The amputation is not gorey and it is very quick. He then has a bandage on so nothing is seen.
  • Corpses will decay over time, and are pretty gruesome-looking, no blood is shown but you can eventually see a skeleton as you progress with the game.
  • You can get into fist fights with NPCs. As the fight goes in you can get bloodied and beaten fairly intensly. Players can choke out people, headbutt them, throw them out of windows, or slam their heads into walls. NPCS can be Knocked out. Sometimes they get back up and act dazed but other times they don't get up.
  • The game includes some brutal fistfights. Not too graphic or bloody but pretty intense. There are also multiple extended intense shootouts throughout the game, nothing very violent.
  • In online, when hunting the owl hoot family the opening cutscene may be disturbing to some viewers.
  • When using weapons such as revolvers, rifles and repeaters, the amount of blood that is shown is usually quite small and easy to miss. Comparable to older western movies. However, when using other more powerful weapons (such as the sawed off and double barreled shotgun) or explosives, Larger amounts are shown. But they are only optional and can still be easy to miss since most shootouts happen from a longer range.
  • Near the end of the game, there is a cutscene showing aftermath of a man mauled by a bear. His intestines, ribs, brain, and eyes are visible. Arguably the most, or one of the most graphic parts of the game.
  • All violence in the game is realistic
  • Probably the most violent Rockstar game since Manhunt 2
  • The game has a lot of shootouts and realistic blood. You can kill, blow heads, dismember, burn people, use explosives, knives, axes etc.
  • In the game you can counter a man who gets his leg stuck inside of a Bear trap and you are supposed to help him, you can help him but the worst part is when you fail then he is screaming after having his leg cut off, very bloody but can be avoided
  • You have the option to hunt, kill, and skin animals. (Deer, Rabbits, Skunk, squirrels, etc.) The skinning is shown and is very realistic. You then have the option to cook and eat the meat. There are a few times where this is required to progress through the game.
  • If you shoot smaller animals with higher round weapons, they will be obliterated. Quick, but gory.
  • Higher rounds will result in dismemberment if shot in the legs, arms, or head. This also applies to dead bodies.
  • The story missions in this game have minimal strong violence with sprays of blood and some dismemberment but nothing overly extreme. The open world however, leaves the player with the option to commit whatever crimes they want. This, however, comes with extreme consequences that can be tied to the real world.
  • In a cutscene, a man is shown beheaded with his eyes cut out. Very graphic. ( We only see the aftermath. The beheading and eye gouging is seen later as an aftermath. )
  • Players can shoot peoples fingers off, blood is seen spraying from the stubs
  • Near the beginning of the game, you find John with scratches all over his face, his face is quite bloody even a while after the mission.
  • Extremely brutal and graphic game. Very bloody.
  • When you headshot people with shot gun their head obliterates. And it's so graphical and gory.

Profanity

  • You'll hear words like shit, ass, bastard and bitch frequently, as well as other miscellaneous swears. There is infrequent use of the F word. Arthur can insult Kieran and one of the insults that he can level at Kieran is "I hear that Adler woman wants to cut your dick off!"
  • The Latin American version contains more profanity in the subtitles than in the Spanish or English version.
  • The word "Cocksucker" can be heard during free roaming & once during a mission.
  • Lenny says "Nigger Lover" while explaining how he faces racism in the south to Arthur.
  • Very infrequent use of "fuck".
  • In online while bounty hunting July Jolie, she's calls your character a "cunt-sniffer."
  • The o'driscolls in one mission say "Fuck them"
  • 25 F words (7 in chapter one, 4 in chapter three, 9 in chapter four, 2 in chapter five and six, and one in the epilogue)
  • In all of the towns while free roaming the town people may insult you using a few profanities, but only if provoked.(eg. running into them or killing other townsfolk.
  • One Character says 4 F words in One mission, the first 2 are back to back, then about 5 minutes later he says another 2 back to back.
  • "Fuck" is used a few times throughout the game, but it's rare and doesn't happen until a bit later in the game. "Goddamn," "Shit," and " Son of a bitch" are the most frequently used swear words, and even those aren't very frequent.
  • Most F bombs come from Sean and NPC's, and it isn't very frequent.
  • You will sometimes hear NPC's call you a cocksucker when you antagonize them or shoot at them.
  • Easily over 40 uses of fuck but most of them are in side missions or random events
  • If you don't do any side stuff then there will only be 17 uses of fuck
  • There are f-words, but not frequent because the game is 50 hours long.
  • Profanity can not be turned off in settings.
  • Lenny gets called the N-Word by a Lemoyne Raider in one of the missions. Can be avoided.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • People can be seen drinking alcoholic substances. The player can join them.
  • Some mild drug use. But itis very hard to catch
  • Heavy drinking is involved between two main characters in one mission, which leads to vomiting.
  • During the course of the game, players' character can engage in a drinking mini-game in which alcohol is poured for drunken bar patrons. The player character is also depicted drinking alcohol, sometimes resulting in screen-distortion effects and impaired controls.
  • One of the stimulant power-ups is known as Cocaine Gum, which players' character can chew; in one scene, characters can briefly be seen smoking from an opium pipe.
  • You can smoke cigars & cigarettes in game.
  • One of the gang members is addicted to morphine. You can find a syringe inside a hollowed out book.
  • You can get drunk, smoke cigarrettes or cigars and eat cocaine chewing gums. Very few drugs.
  • In the epilogue mission: a new Jerusalem the house blueprints have the number 420 on top though this may just be a coincidence and is also very hard to see.
  • Alcohol, such as rum, whiskey, whine and beer can be used for health benefits in the game such as restoring health. Same with cigars. If too much of a certain substance is consumed the game, you will become drunk/high, and the screen will become distorted for a short amount of time.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • You're able to interact with strangers which might lead to small missions, some of these individuals are criminals or mentally unhinged. And might try to kill or harm you. In some cases, they'll relentlessly chase you nonstop throughout the entire game. This can all be very unsettling.
  • The main story is extremely depressing and sad at times.
  • A gang known as the Skinner Brothers roam the lands of Tall Trees. They are the most violent characters in the game. They skin, scalp, burn, gut and slaughter innocent civilians. You don't see any of these occurring, except scalping. (It is a random encounter, you are intended to save the victim) When you raid their camps, they will have decapitated bodies hung from trees, buckets of organs and scalps hanging in their tents.
  • In some Chance encounters, a person or a couple is being attacked/mugged. If you fail the encounter one of them will die and you will lose honor. The other person cries out in anguish. Very realistic voice acting.
  • Strong violence sometimes
  • Chapter 6 is very depressing
  • An easter egg reference to the "Klu Klux Klan" is made. You are supposed to shoot and kill them. You gain "honor points" which is the games version of XP for doing so.
  • At night in the game, there is a shed that can be found and at a certain point a pentagram will randomly show up. While there is a story behind this, it requires much digging and research, so to the average person it will be nothing more than a random pentagram. This is not a major part of the game at all.
  • Some chance encounters can be disturbing.
  • The player can sometimes be randomly assaulted by grizzly bears out of nowhere if they're in the Northwestern parts of the map, often resulting in a jumpscare. Due to this, players should be cautious when entering these regions, especially if they're hunting bears or other dangerous animals, such as wolves and cougars.
  • Hunting grizzly bears can be anxiety-inducing for the player (especially for those who are less experienced) since you usually don't know where it is until it has already spotted you first. The bear's roars are also very startling and most likely indicate it is about to charge at you, if not already.
  • Some missions and free roam have heavy topics and can be extremely depressing.
  • Some gangs such as night folk, skinner brothers, and the murfree brood actively dismember, dissect, and castrate civilians. Very gory and grotesque.
  • Rated R for Strong Graphic/Bloody Violence Throughout, Grisly Images, Language, Brief Sexuality, Some Nudity and Drug Material.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Sex & Nudity

  • In one mission you take Lenny to a bar and get drunk and lose him. While finding him you can go into a back room where you can see two people kissing. Later you after you get more drunk and everyone appears with Lenny's face, you can go back there to look for Lenny again and see the same two people kissing but with Lenny's face on both of them.
  • There is an optional scene which implies the main character has been raped. He knocks you out and then you wake up in the forest and feel painful. It is only later in the game that you realize what has happened. Most people just think that they have been robbed. It is very hard to understand and most people dont even know that is what happened.
  • In a very lengthy side mission, an artist hosts a gallery viewing of his paintings. These paintings are all of nude women. ( We see breasts and butts, but no frontal nudity.) We soon find out the all the women in the paintings are the wives of the men in town, which causes a fight to breakout between the artist and the men at the viewing.

Violence & Gore

  • A man is captured by a rival gang. He gets tortured and shot by them. The player has to remove a bullet wound from his shoulder. He grunts and winces in pain while you do so.
  • The serial killers lair is extremely disturbing and could be scary to younger audience (Includes Graphic Images)
  • At around 40% in story mode, there is a cutscene where Arthur and Dutch are talking, and Dutch notices something off in the distance. The camera zooms in and we see the it's a decapitated body on horseback. The corpse is holding its decapitated head in its hands with his eyes gouged out. Gory, but the cutscene is skippable.
  • There is a long mission in the game which requires you to help a professor build the electric chair. The mission requires you to also catch a suitable subject for it, which ends up being an animal rapist. The mission ends with a group of people standing in front of the chair and the professor and the criminal. The professor pulls the switch but doesn't work, he pulls it again but it backfires and kills him, and the criminal. Played for dark humor.
  • In a mission, 4 of the characters, (Arthur, Bill, Micah, and Sean) are going to do a mission in the town Rhodes, and they get ambushed when walking through the town, a sniper on a building snipes Sean in the head, bloody but only shows for a second, this is a very sad moment in chapter 3, it can be heartbreaking for players as Sean dies.
  • A man is sent riding on a horse into the main camp, his dismembered head is resting on his lap and it's eyes are plucked out.
  • A member of the gang is seen holding his decapitated head (eyes also appear to be gouged out) the bloody end of the neck is also seen.

Profanity

  • Pussy Cat is used by "Saloon Girls" during a mission. Javier calls Arthur a "Cat" which meant that he was calling Arthur a "Pussy"
  • Micah calls John Marston's wife Abigail a whore in the last mission of the game during their showdown.
  • In online you can buy an emote which allows you to stick up the middle finger
  • John gets attacked by a bear later in the game, afterwards, he calls it a "fucking monster."

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • In the mission where Arthur & Lenny get drunk, Lenny vomits & if Arthur gets away from the law, he wakes up in the middle of nowhere & vomits.
  • Oleander sage is a poison plant that you can use to make poisoned arrows, however if you consume it, Arthur or John will vomit.
  • Reverend Swanson is shown to be a drunk in the game. You can find his "Bible" and open it up to see a syringe and morphine vial. Characters also talk about his habit

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The character Micah Bell is a complete psychopath, and the things he does are very nasty and unpleasant. However, most of his actions can only be heard, not shown.
  • In an optional side mission, Arthur is able to track down a serial killer. You hear about terible things that he has done through out the mission.
  • The scene where arthur dies is one of the saddest moments in video game history.
  • The final mission is very emotional. Arthur will have a fight with a knife or fists with the main villain Micah. In the end, Arthur either lays and watches the sunset while he dies, or gets shot in the face. Very depressing.
  • As the game progresses, you learn that Arthur has tuberculosis, and at times can be seen coughing up blood. The condition worsens as you progress, such as bloodshot eyes, and being weaker than usual. The game ends with Arthur dying.
  • A elderly woman who is a taxidermist can be found at some point in the game after a lot of progressing. She walks you around her very large collection of stuffed animals, posed in various poses. She also states that she had tried it on humans, but "animals were better."
