Historical inaccuracy drinking game
perplexio-26 April 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Jane is supposed to be an historian, right?

If there were a drinking game wherein people were required to take a drink for each historical inaccuracy on this show, the viewers of this show would likely suffer from cirrhosis of the liver after a few episodes...

How can any historian worth her salt get the following things wrong when they go back to a 1980 "Yuppie Garden Party."

Jane tells HG that "Greed is Good", "Reagan is president," and "Just talk about Madonna and greed and you'll be fine."

While the term "Yuppie" did appear in print as early as May 1980 it did not really gain traction until used by Bob Greene in a 1983 column. It was not a term that was in common usage in 1980.

The 1980 election occurred in November 1980, Reagan did not take office until January 1981. Jimmy Carter was still president in 1980.

The line "Greed is good!" did not appear until Oliver Stone's 1987 movie "Wall Street", 7 years AFTER the party that HG and Jane showed up at.

And Madonna... She didn't become popular until the mid-80s. If HG had started talking about Madonna in 1980 people would have been looking at him funny and asking, "Who?"

And then in the very next episode they're watching a YouTube clip of a World War I newsreel with the sound of explosions in the background... There was NO SOUND in films (newsreel or otherwise) in 1918. The first "talkie" was in 1927, "The Jazz Singer." There would not have been any "explosion" sounds on those newsreels.

Did ABC run out of money? They could have high school history students fact checking for them, or unpaid interns... The mistakes they're making are really really bad and quite noticeable ones!
