A shapeless journey
The travelogue is a well-worn formula: someone, often a famous person, undertakes a jounrey to exotic places; and (conveniently) undergoes a profound personal experience in so doing. The idea that moutaineer Joe Simpson should travel through eastern Burma, where his father fought in World War Two, might have been thought to fit the template. But this is a rather thin series. Contemporary conflict mostly prevents Simpson from following in his father's past; while neither he nor his compansion Ed Stafford seem particularly interested in the local culture. So we get two hours of the two men, lurking on the edge of the jungle they'd hoped to check, mostly baffled by the obstacles confronting them, and Simpson's own confession he wasn't particularly close to his father doesn't help. The overall mood is of a video diary of a not particularly succesful holiday. Simpson can be a superb racconteur (and has some amazing stories to tell); but here, he just doesn't have very much to tell us.
