Intense Episode & Dumb Decisions
panagiotis199321 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Trapped and running out of air damn. Killing the bitten, while it's best for everyone it won't buy the group much time. Alicia having a panic attack after killing the bitten makes sense. Why Troy is willing to help save everyone, I thought that was what he wanted, revenge. So everyone passed out but Alicia is the last one standing? Makes no sense. The helicopter scene was really cool. Alicia's scene fighting the zombie(s) was intense. The scene with Ofelia removing the zombie that was stuck so that air could come in was nice. Madison, Victor and Walker coming to save everyone was nice. Love how Troy is sitting there like nothing happened. Why is Nick lying to cover the truth about Troy? Makes no sense. Alicia wants to leave the group and survive alone? Makes no sense. And Nick and Troy will follow her to make sure she is ok? What? I was about to give a higher rating but too many dumb decisions. My rating is 7.5/10.

This episode is particularly notable for its claustrophobic setting and intense character development, primarily focusing on Alicia Clark and her challenges
fernandoschiavi17 April 2024
Inside the pantry, the air vent is broken, and people are bit. If suffocation doesn't kill them, the turned people will. While Crazy Dog and Ofelia fix the vent. Alicia makes a tough decision to let the bit sacrifice themselves in order to maintain air supply and prevent more death. Alicia bonds with 9-11 widow Christine who encourages her to put on a strong presence for the rest of them. Despite the vent turning back on, people passed out and become Walkers. As she fights off the dead and puts down Christine, Madison, who has rescued Nick and Troy, manage to clear path for her to get out. Everyone regroups and decide to go to the dam, but Alicia chooses to go alone to Jake's cabin and find her own way to live in the world.

The thirteenth episode of "Fear the Walking Dead" Season 3, titled "This Land Is Your Land," is a harrowing and emotionally charged exploration of leadership, sacrifice, and survival. This episode is particularly notable for its claustrophobic setting and intense character development, primarily focusing on Alicia Clark as she faces her most challenging and defining moments in the series.

Set almost entirely within the confines of a ranch's underground bunker, the episode starts with the community taking refuge from the walker horde unleashed in the previous episode. Alicia's evolution into a resilient leader is the cornerstone of this narrative. Trapped with dozens of others, she is forced to make life-and-death decisions when it becomes clear that their oxygen supply is dwindling. The atmosphere is tense and desperate, emphasizing the psychological and physical toll on everyone, especially Alicia, as she grapples with the immediate threat of suffocation and the moral implications of her decisions.

The most gripping scenes occur as Alicia takes on the burden of euthanizing bitten and potentially suffocating survivors to conserve air, an act that is both brutal and compassionate. These moments are deeply personal and painful, showcasing Alicia's inner conflict and the intense emotional distress these decisions cause her. The character's profound sense of duty and her acute awareness of the weight her actions carry are portrayed with remarkable sensitivity and strength by actress Alycia Debnam-Carey.

Outside the bunker, the episode also touches on the broader implications of the survival struggle at the ranch. Madison, Strand, and Walker's attempts to save those underground by drawing the walkers away highlight the themes of unity and collective survival against odds. Their efforts underscore the essential human struggle for hope and redemption that runs through the series. Meanwhile, the scenes of Alicia finally emerging from the bunker, only to witness the devastation and loss, are powerful and poignant, symbolizing her transformation and the irrevocable changes in her worldview.

Some people don't accept the improvement
hhound-618094 October 2017
Many people don't accept the improvement of this show that this season so far is much better than season 7 of TWD that became a soap opera with zombies and action junkie while Fear pretty much made the walkers a threat again and ANYONE can die there's no exception,so TWD fans could just shut up and enjoy this season don't give these reviewers any attention!

So Pivotal
trustandrely2 October 2017
This episode is just full of the evolution of many of the major characters....both individually, collaboratively and intimately. The action packed scenes are filled with guns, knives, bats, RV's, spears, a pick-up truck, a grenade launcher, gasoline and even a helicopter....the emotional pivotal acting had me so tense that I was on the edge of my seat. Undeniably this was the BEST episode so far!

The anticipated follow-up episode to Brother's Keeper, slower paced and a high focus on character development
Holt3444 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The last episode was eventful, it had the large horde attack the Ranch. Jake died by bloodloss after getting bitten by a walker indirectly by Nick. The episode ended with Nick and Troy away and safe from the horde and Alicia, Ofelia and Crazy Dog inside the bunker. Troy was the reason the horde came quicker. Last episode was fantastic, was it original? Not really but a camp getting overrun is a realistic thing to happen if we would live in a zombie apocalypse.

This episode starts off in the bunker and people are bit and dying, so it's up to Alicia to be the leader and hope that the people need. Alycia Debnam-Carey shows how capable she is with her acting abilities, her performance is one of the highlights of this episode. The bunker scenes are slow paced and character driven, focusing on drama instead of action and the camera work that is used makes us even more claustrophobic to show how the characters are feeling. Whilst outside is hectic and fast paced, the theme that comes up again and again in this episode is the feeling of claustrophobia and being trapped. It's horror in a way, many people have that fear. Meera Menon did a terrific job at directing. This episode is more a character study than a regular episode, so this is not everyone's cup of tea.

This was a slow paced, dialogue and character driven episode. Perfectly written and acted. Sound editing and music was as always top notch, so was the cinematography.

I have actually forgotten how important this episode is to the show, to the characters, Alicia the most. The character development she got in this episode makes her into a whole new character in a way, not this teenager but this strong survivor that lost hope of civilization being rebuilt and that was something Travis held onto and now Madison. Will she regain it? Realistically it will take a long time and we know that Dave Erickson like realism in his writing, I can say that it's something that she'll have to work on for future episodes.

Season 3 rocks
blakenash21 August 2018
Season 3 of Fear was amazing. I'm writing this after the fact of season 4B which, in my opinion and many others, ripped out the potential that the show runner managed to whip after 2 plodding seasons. This Land is Your Land was a really fantastic moment in this upswing of quality writing, and it brought Alicia into the foreground in a huge way. Heart pounding, trapped-in-a-box story that cemented season 3 as the best example of most-improved television in recent history.

The aftershocks of this story would be felt for the rest of the season and the pseudo series finale at the end of #3 is directly influenced by this episode. Very good, very, very good.

Best episode so far
elrollibre23 February 2021
This episode is probably the best of the series. Every second leaves you with your heart in a fist, suffering as they suffer; same anxiety, same fear, same claustrophobia. But what makes the episode really brilliant is Alycia's stunning performance. You just can't have your eyes out of her. Simply stunning. Amazing acting skills. A gem of an actress.

Fear TWD, the Ottos, and the show's writing over time
jmernsthausen2 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I just don't like that Troy and Nick were shown driving with (half-dead) Jake back to the ranch and they weren't blasting music or laying on the horn in attempts to draw the horde away from the ranch. Or the fact that Jeremiah was such a "prepper" yet once he figured out it was a zombie apocalypse and that the dead were drawn to sound, hadn't installed some sort of emergency siren system outside of the ranch to activate in the event that a horde did approach.

This being said: Seasons 1-3 of Fear The Walking Dead were SOOO MUCH BETTER than seasons 1-3 of The Walking Dead by miles. The Walking Dead's first few seasons were so slow and boring in comparison. The writing for seasons 1-3 of Fear was far superior. Season 4 with Al "chasing the story" is when the show took a real dive unfortunately, and it took another with the cast "chasing people to help," and it's final and ultimate nail in the coffin came with the nuclear launch storyline. Eeeek. I could've written better fiction for these characters than this fluff and unbelievable nonsense.

Great show. Fine episode. But a bit too on the nose. They hide out in the bunker... start running out of air. People start suffocating. And everyone dies except the main characters? I get it. Gotta love the plot along, but really?

Storyline: In the pantry, Alicia spots Blake stealthily examining a bite wound on his stomach.

Ofelia informs Alicia that the pantry's air vent is broken. They realize they will run out of air if they don't fix the fan.

Troy begins digging a grave for Jake. Nick orders him to stop and help save the ranch.

Blake estimates it will take at least an hour each way to crawl through the air shaft and clear the blocked fan. Alicia calculates that they have two hours before the carbon dioxide kills everyone in the pantry. She suggests they reduce the amount of carbon dioxide by killing bitten survivors. Crazy Dog insists on strip-searching the terrified ranchers and Nation members to find out who has been bitten, but Ofelia and Alicia worry that the people won't react well to force.

Alicia calmly announces that the air vent is broken and asks bitten people to step forward to help conserve air. No one volunteers. Finally, Blake reveals his wound, prompting more people to step forward.

Nick and Troy devise a plan to direct the herd away from the pantry by blowing up the fuel reserve. They get in the truck and head toward the ranch.

Ofelia and Crazy Dog climb into the air shaft.

Alicia and Blake inform the bitten survivors that they will administer a large dose of morphine to knock the bitten unconscious, then stab them with a knife to prevent them from turning. The bitten survivors start to rethink their decision. Christine, one of the ranchers, insists that morphine will ease their death. A Nation resident offers to go first.

The Nation resident lies on the floor. With Blake's help, Alicia injects morphine into his arm then drives a knife through his head.

Alicia leaves the room and cries. Christine urges her to remain calm for the sake of the victims.

Outside, Nick fires a grenade to lure walkers away from their path to the fuel. He and Troy race toward the fuel reserve in their truck but crash into an RV, attracting walkers. They run to the chopper and get inside. Troy laughs maniacally as walkers surround the helicopter.

Blake tells Alicia it's time for his own death. He cries and apologizes for all the people he killed with Troy. Alicia injects him with morphine.

Alicia returns to the main room. Everyone stares at her in silence.

Ofelia and Crazy Dog crawl through the shaft. Ofelia tells Crazy Dog to turn feet first so that they can lower themselves down a drop. Crazy Dog gets stuck and starts to hyperventilate.

Alicia and Christine rest in the pantry. Christine tells Alicia that she regrets hiding from the world on the ranch during her last years prior to the apocalypse. She urges Alicia never to make decisions based on fear.

Crazy Dog explains to Ofelia that he has suffered from PTSD ever since fighting in Iraq. They take a few moments for Crazy Dog to recuperate.

Alicia and Christine share some of their favorite memories. Alicia describes a memory about Nick and says that she used to look up to Nick. She starts to nod off then realizes that Christine and everyone else in the pantry is either unconscious or dead. The air has nearly run out.

Nick turns on the helicopter rotors. Walkers break through the glass.

Alicia wakes up and sees a walker eating a corpse. The walker attacks her; Alicia stabs the walker and then passes out. More survivors start to turn after she passes out.

Ofelia and Crazy Dog arrive at the fan and find a walker lodged in the blades. Crazy Dog hoists Ofelia up so that she can kill the walker. Crazy Dog passes out. They all fall to the ground. Ofelia shoots the walker. The fan starts whirring, pushing air through the shaft and into the pantry.

Alicia wakes up and starts fighting walkers, drags Christine's body into the armory and closes the gate. She grabs a gun and starts firing at walkers.

Troy offers Nick a gun to kill himself as walkers overrun the chopper. They're interrupted by a loud blast.

Alicia hears the explosion. She continues shooting walkers then starts killing them with her knife when she runs out of ammo. The doors open. Madison runs in with Strand, Walker, Nick and Troy. Alicia stabs Christine in the head.

Alicia catches up on sleep in the water tanker.

Madison gazes upon the decimated ranch. She tells Nick that they are driving to the trading post and then to the dam.

Madison reveals to Ofelia that Daniel is alive. Ofelia cries.

Nick informs Alicia that Jake is dead. Alicia asks where the horde came from. Nick covers for Troy and says that Troy spotted the mass of walkers but was too late in warning them.

Alicia tells Madison that she wants to find a way to live for herself that doesn't involve running from place to place in fear. She reveals a plan to live alone in the cabin that Jake told her about.

Alicia leaves in a truck. Nick tells Madison he will meet her at the dam after he follows Alicia to make sure she reaches her destination safely. Madison tells him to take Troy.

Alicia drives across the plain. Nick and Troy follow her at a distance. Madison's group leaves in the oil tanker.

The only sane character finally breaks free
namob-4367330 November 2023
Alicia finally tells her mother to stuff it. Well, sort of. It took 3 seasons but finally we have one character we can cheer for and is not dumb as a lamp.

Speaking of Alicia basically carries this entire episode, showing the rest of the cast how acting is supposed to work.

The rest is convoluted, dumb, irrational and makes no sense as usual. However finally off that ranch. No sane person would have stayed at that place, but here we are, almost a full season doing absolutely nothing, accomplishing nothing, and doing nothing of interest. The writers should be ashamed of themselves.

Hopefully we can now ignore all the rest and focus this show on Alicia. Or that this convenient dam blows up with all of the rest inside. I assume not, but one can hope.

No common sense
dncorp1 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Homemade from cardboard bellows to get air into Bunker.

Airway blocked clear the ducts using slow burning explosives.

Get those bitten to make a run to the air vent outside to clear the vent. Smear them with Zombie blood, they know that works, give them picks and shovels not to kill Zombies but to clear the air vent. After clearing the air vent they can then take their time killing Zombies. They will be remembered as the Heroes that saved the Survivors.

Idiots blowing up their Fuel Reserves, there might not be anymore fuel being produced anywhere.

Glass breaking on UH-1 Huey Helicopter, since the Vietnam War, the side windows on the doors were plastic not glass, to save weight.

Troy is a liability, NOT an Asset. Troy will get others killed. In Combat somebody would have "fragged" him by now. Ooops "accidentally" shot Troy in the head.

Worst Episode this season!
pherfort-835-998274 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I am a long time "Walking Dead" Fan and I also anticipated "Fear" long before it came out. Man, was I disappointed after 1st and 2nd season...

Now in the 3rd season with this episode I have already no hope left for this show. Yes, I will keep watching, but only because I like Zombies. I do not like all the main actors a bit. The show makers keep on killing all likable persons on this show (Travis, the boy friend of Strand, etc) and all the left over people are such a disappointment in all regards, illogical behavior, stupid decisions and and and.

Also the writing of this show is so bad, I do not even have a word for how bad it is. In today's episode ALL people inside the bunker die of lack of oxygen except the three main-protagonists Alicia, Ofelia and Crazy Dog. Not only that, but how long was Alicia unconscious lying on the floor until the dead next to her reanimate as walkers? It can impossible be longer than only a few minutes, but a huge part reanimated after this short time and all this after we know since 2010 that it can take up several hours to reanimate and only walkers who experienced an extreme high level of anxiety or adrenaline come back quite fast (around 8 minutes).

So Alicia wakes up after she passed out due to lack of oxygen and instantly fights off 5-10 walkers with full strength and she is not even a little bit physically weak, sorry but this is just bad writing and plot convenience.

Anybody who really compared this show to the real "Walking Dead" has no idea what he is talking about.

I DON'T GET THE CONSTANT MELLOW BORING DRAMA!!
transientdreams11 November 2020
This episode really blew chunks in so many ways. Seems some of the women writers and other producers have forgotten this IS zombie series and NOT a character study of to make peace with your past while philosophizing about the paths not taken. God what a mess this show is becoming, and I am only on the 3rd season! It's like: fast-forward, fast-forward..."Oh wow, 30 seconds of action!" Annnnd, now back to the babbling happy talk-talk with SO much sadness thrown in. 1st season was AWESOME! Why? Because they didn't spend 5 minutes for every angst-filled emotional moment with TOO much camera time on poopy faces! If we want to see THAT much BOO-HOO mellow drama, we can turn on the Hallmark channel for god's sake. Ok, back to fast-forward, fast-forward...Oh, and the characters are getting stupider, uglier and less likeable, as well as just lame! You can actually 'Smell' the wasted college degrees in some of that writing and poor directing. This episode is the WORST so far, and I had to say so. Even though there are several to choose from in the 3rd season. Hey guys, you GOT the money! PAY FOR SOME DECENT SCRIPT WRITING AND DIRECTION!!!

Yawn
sleepingsunrise19 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This one and the last one, Brother's Keeper, are so damn boring. Too much talking and not enough doing. Get in a truck snd honk the horn and draw the walkers away from the camp. Why are you blowing up the fuel reservoir? Why not send the people who got bit to go outside and clear whatever is blocking the vent. Heck, just get in the bunker and don't bother fighting, let them pass through. Why is it taking so long for Madison to come back?

This episode and the last reminded me of that ridiculous episode on TWD where Carol is chasing a rat in the house.

Pointless!

Just skip this episode. You aren't missing anything.

So stupid
stevenschultz-8047513 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I can't make any sense of using the supply bunker as the last stand against the horde.

One way in or out, and questionable ventilation? What was the plan here?

We know that zombies ignore people covered in blood.. why not use that as the frontline defense? It would be easy to form a perimeter around some high ground and take out waves of the horde, but if I may nitpick a little further, why the heck were there no trenches around the ranch? A thin barbed wire fence and no ditches or trenches?

I couldn't take it seriously when everyone started suffocating in the bunker. It was so stupid I laughed out loud.
