It's Back -- And Maybe Even Better
skinnybert16 September 2018
Comedy Is So Subjective, vol. 201: This was my first of the new MST3K, which proved entertaining and/or funny throughout (which couldn't be said about every episode of the original series). Concerns that it might be a pale imitation proved groundless, as did concerns that targeting a younger audience might leave us classic MSTies behind. There also seemed to be a higher rate of riffs per minute with no lulls. Hiring twice the number of writers must be paying off!

A big help comes the movie itself: lively, colorful, and energetic -- throwing cast members through sets and situations with all the abandon of an adolescent sci-fi fan on a sugar high. But the MST cast prove just as entertaining -- to their credit, it seemed like they could be given a lot more time (which may be what the other reviewer found lacking).

In short, typical MST3K fare: the kind of film that used to fill Saturday afternoon programming on the independent channels, riffed by pros. I don't know if this is the "best" of the new crop, but it's certainly good enough, and got me interested to see more.

7/10 = not just solid but interesting / fun

Akton the incredible
paultapner24 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
If you've never seen Starcrash then you've dodged a bullet all these years. A late 70's Italian made star wars ripoff. Cheap sets. Cheap visuals. Terrible scripting. All the characters do is spout expository dialogue. And British model the stunningly beautiful Caroline Munro gets a lead role as tough feisty space smuggler Stella Starr. Only to get dubbed incredibly badly and since this was 1978 she doesn't get to do anything much other than be rescued by the men and run around in a bikini and leather boots. The costumes are a compensation though.

Marjoe Gortner plays her associate Akton, who is the most irritatingly smug movie character ever and who can pull deus ex machinas out of his fingers. Literally. Christopher Plummer plays the Emperor as if reading from an autocue and looking for his cheque. There's a startlingly young David Hasselhoff and an annoying hick robot.

So it's prime fare for the show, and you could get through just laughing at the movie yourself. Thankfully the hit rate of gags is a very solid one. Two of the linking sequences which riff on the film are really superb. And the guest star of the week - who you might have to wait to the end credits to recognise - is pretty good.

Kinga gets a great line to finish it off as well. Great fun. 9/10

It's the high school production of Battlestar Galactica!

The crew aboard The Satellite Of Love turn their attention to the awful 1978 tragedy, Starcrash. I'd give you a semblance of a plot outline but there isn't one to be made. It's a haphazard and random collage of scenes decorated with the film's only bright spot - Caroline Munro. This poor girl had a worse manager than Colonel Tom Parker... and it didn't help that she couldn't act either. Nice to look at though, which, of course, was why she was cast!

Hugh 'Marjoe' Ross Gortner deserves a mention for being the most annoying twit in the history of entertainment. He's the guy that always managed to secure a punch in the face at school! The red mist would form in front of my eyes every time this rock star wannabe, broke into his trademark toothy grin.

A good looking Christopher Plummer chews uncomfortably through his appalling lines yet the baby-faced David Hasselhoff looks right at home with his! Add a robot from Texas with an IQ of70 and you've got a movie! It's the high school production of Battlestar Galactica with casting by Ikea!

There's a wealth of material here for the friendly folk at MST3K to chew into but they never quite get going. The riffs pile on in numbers but not in laughs. It's always worth a watch for the 'Misties' out there but this outing of the reboot maybe the weakest so far. (I'm watching them in sequence and this is number six.)

Best gag for the kids: "She's got her head in the butt part again!" ...and for the grown-ups: "Er, what are you doing?" - "Well, I did just save you!"

A swing and a mostly wasted opportunity boys, sorry.
