MST3K at it's finest... except wider!

We're back on track! Avalanche is a disaster movie in possible every way! It's brought down even further by a simply terrible performance by Rock Hudson. He played himself in McMillan & Wife and when that show ended its run he tried acting. That was a mistake! Steve Franken shows up again. (He was the awful Danny in The Time Travelers.) Robert Forster's Nick Thorne is about the only character that the audience can take seriously.

This is a TV caliber movie with well-known faces filling the roles and it is a good vehicle for the friendly folk at the Satellite Of Love. The movie is awful of course, but there's loads of action between the speaking for some great riffs.

Of the four episodes of the reboot of MST3K that I have seen, this may be the best for gags and references. (I'm watching the new series in sequence.) There is, however, a long musical number in the middle which seems to have been added to make up the 90-minute running time. If you're watching on Netflix, now's a good time to make a sandwich. If you're watching this on commercial TV, this melodic filler may be frustrating to sit through.

I'm still not sold on the 'Gypsy' and Kinga Forrester characters. I'll probably skip through these bits when I watch it again in the future. Gypsy has lost her naive, simple-minded charm and the money-mad Kinga character comes across as a bit forced. But because the actual riffing of the movie in this outing is top notch I'll let it slide. (See what I did there? Slide?)

Best gag: "Hey, that's a handicapped spot!" or "She died as she lived - completely lit up!"

A return to genius - top marks for this one despite the musical interlude.

The Best!

This was laugh out loud funny - all the way through. The acting and writing in Avalanche really stank, and the bots swarmed fast and furiously with the jokes. Often, I give up after the first 40 minutes of MST; the jokes start to pall and the weirdness of the original film has lost it's hilarity. But I'm glad that I stayed with this one, because it entertained till the end. Why did we wear that horrible brown? The late 70s were really tasteless times.

Warning: Spoilers
Following the usual format for the show, Jonah and the Droids this time get through 1970s disaster flick Avalanche. A film from the days when male Hollywood leads could coast through on macho charm alone. When stock characters and actors filled expected roles. And so long before cgi that visual effects were laughable. Even before we knew what cgi was.

Avalanche isn't, like cry wilderness, a truly terrible movie. But unlike the time travellers in the previous episode, it's not just dated, it's just not that great either. It does take far too long to get to the disaster as well, and that does get pointed out.

But for me this was a really strong episode gag wise, with an awful lot of them hitting. And the interludes are all really funny and great as well. One's a musical number, so that may or may not be your thing. But it was a fun song, so it was another great bit in a really great episode. Great stuff.

Best of MST3K

As a fan of MST3K since the early 90's, I can honestly say I've never laughed so hard during any other episode as I did in this one. So much that I felt obligated to make an account on IMDB just to give this episode the 10 stars it deserves.

My wife had a swollen tooth at the time, and it was like torture for her due to laughing so much.

Probably the weakest of the reboot, so far

This episode was OK. I didn't really care for the choice in this one, but the riffing has its moments. The host segments are good though. I just feel like Avalanche just didn't have enough to really entertain me. I couldn't really finish it, it was too bland to me.
