Nancy and Jonathan visit Murray Bauman, who has been hired by the Hollands to investigate Barb's disappearance. They fill him in on everything that has happened regarding Barb, Will, and Eleven, and play him the tape recording from Hawkins' Lab. Murray believes them, but argues that no one else will, even with the tape recording. He decides that the thing to do is to moderate the story, keeping the facts that Hawkins Lab is responsible for Barb's death, but altering the particulars to make the story palatable for a wider audience. They decide to say that Barb was exposed to deadly toxins from the lab, which will incriminate the people responsible without bringing the supernatural into the story.

Becky and Eleven commiserate over Terry together. Becky shows Eleven the room Terry meant her to have and tells her that she can stay. Lamps blink, and Becky blames faulty electricity but Eleven sees that Terry has a bloody nose and knows that it's Terry trying to communicate. With a blindfold and television static, Eleven is able to go into Terry's mind. In the void, Eleven first sees Terry as she is, and then sees her giving birth. Doctors are telling her to breathe (First word: "breathe"). One of her doctors is Dr. Brenner. Later, Terry wakes up in a room with sunflowers (second word: "sunflower") and the baby is gone. Becky tells Terry that she was stillborn, but Terry insists that Brenner took her daughter. She opens a safe ("three to the right, four to the left") and takes out a gun. Inside Hawkins Lab, she makes her way to a room with a rainbow painted on the door ("rainbow") and sees two little girls, one of whom she calls Jane. Before she can get to her daughter, Terry is captured and taken by Brenner and other Hawkins Lab officials who incapacitate her and electrocute her brain. Brenner says the dose - "four-fifty." Eleven comes back to the present and hears Terry repeating the same words.
Bob figures out Hopper's approximate location and they all drive around looking for Hopper. Will is able to pinpoint the location with his "now memories" and they drive into the field where Hopper's truck is parked. Joyce chops open the vines covering the hole with a shovel and she and Bob go underground. They find Hopper almost suffocated by vines and rescue him. They are followed by people from Hawkins Lab who surround the field. One of them burns the vines, causing Will to writhe in pain and go into a seizure.
