Paul Sun-Hyung Lee and Jamillah Ross in Kim's Convenience (2016)

Plot

Janet's New Job

Kim's Convenience

Edit

Summaries

  • When Janet lands a new job that actually pays, Gerald steps in to fill her shoes at the convenience store.
  • Janet asks Mr. Kim for money to buy tickets to a weekend music festival, and when he refuses, she's had it. She's tired of working at the store for free. If Mr. Kim won't pay her, she'll find someone who will. Lucky for her, it turns out Handy Car Rental is looking for a new, part-time employee. Janet eagerly accepts Shannon's offer, but isn't quite ready to face the realities of her new job, especially when it turns out she has to work the weekend of the music festival. Mr. Kim, meanwhile, hires Gerald to replace Janet at the store. Gerald's a fantastic employee... unless Mr. Kim's around, in which case he's a nervous wreck. And Mr. Kim's always around.
  • Appa and Janet are having a disagreement about her work at the store, for which she has never been paid as an employee. Under the current situation, she feels dependent on Appa for what little money she has, she who doesn't have the $200 for the ticket to a concert she wants to attend this weekend, and he who won't give it to her. Appa, on the other hand, believes their arrangement is fair as he has willingly paid for her room and board and her education among most other things for which she's asked. Needing a sympathetic ear, Janet turns to Jung, who encourages her to get a real job. Overhearing the situation, Shannon offers Janet a part-time job at the car rental agency, which Janet accepts, much to Jung's dismay. Finding out what Janet has done, Appa decides to hire and pay someone to replace her: Gerald, who admits to Janet that he needs the money. Both Appa and Janet find their new situations have both pros and cons. Gerald, who has no retail experience, has to be trained. Although he is a quick study and an efficient worker, he is a nervous wreck specifically around Appa, who is there more often than not since it is his store. And although she likes the fact of a real wage and that Shannon is the easiest person to work for, Janet learns she is at the bottom of the totem pole - something that Jung feels the need to remind her constantly in not taking advantage of easy going Shannon - which means that she has to work the evening of the concert, which was the impetus for getting this job to begin with. Both Appa and Janet would like the old situation back in some modified form, but it may take some maneuvering if only because they are both stubborn and unwilling to make the first move. Meanwhile, Jung finally realizes that he really does like Shannon, neither he or she who may be willing to make the first move.—Huggo
