By reading the premise as presented on the site or elsewhere one may wonder if the AIDS topic could be used in any matter, shape or form. Truth is
you can't, it's simply not funny, though some films about the topic might have used of some form of humor about it or some character using of humor as a defense
mecanism to cope with the disease and I've seen examples of both. But "(aids + b)²" isn't much about AIDS, it's more about the dangers of ignorance and the
lack of information brought on by the things we hear but don't know much or anything about it.
The short film presents the story of an Indian kid (Morris Jeyachandran), completely uninterested in going to school to learn things, whose life is turned around after hearing his father hearing about a new virus that's spread through the air and somehow he makes an association with AIDS, which causes curiosity in the kid but also a lot of suspicious due to a series of confusing events. From the little he reads he begins to think he might have the disease which makes him feel miserable and sad but...things are learned along the way.
It was a tough watch due to the absurdity of it all, yet since it all comes from the kid's point of view and his social interactions with family, friends and a food vendor, the film shows some true to life since kids are quite impressionable with the things they see and hear, and because of that the movie manages to succeed in being darkly funny though it doesn't reach an hysterical level. And since the makers of it were interested in showing what the kid can learn and the whole process of knowledge it has a valid message to say to current audiences (is the topic ever brought on schools in recent years? I wonder).
A quite interesting and enlightning film. I just didn't bought the fact that the father overhears things and repeats neighbors rumours or similar, yet he has a cellphone and the older son has a notebook but he never checks the internet not once? What planet are you living on, my man? 6/10.
