Slog fest
Leofwine_draca23 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
A SHAPE OF WATER rip-off, made on an indie budget with few redeeming features. SOFT MATTER has the same research institute along with a guy in a fish man costume, some fun FX and over the top moments, and unfortunately a cast of unlikeable characters. Sadly it's a bit of a slog fest overall despite best intentions.

This movie was definitely an experience. It's not going to be for everyone, but if you want to view a experimental micro budget, sci-fi, art film you won't soon forget, give it a watch. Definitely better than the 2.8 it's currently at

I bought this on dvd and watched it streaming. A creative surreal sci fi dream

Soft Matter was an amazing mix of filmmaking techniques.

From the very 80s VHS tape static look in the intro, blinking titles and such, it was an homage to what would be seen in something like an 80s informercial/work instruction/safety science video and the music was very good/retro/comparable to something from Kung Fury. When the film kicks in, the footage changes to high res and looks and though it was shot in 1080p or possibly 4k but I couldn't tell because my tv only displays 1080p. Good camera work. Seems either dolly tracking or a slider was used for some shot and the audio was recorded well. There is one scene in which Kish and Haircut are positioned a good distance away from the camera sitting on a wall and the audio is still very clear so it is clear that the actors had a proper mic nearby, possibly behind them. Part of the reason I am reviewing the film is that I had read a negative review that said it looked like it was shot on a camcorder and the audio levels were off and compared it to a throwaway junk movie. It seems that whoever wrote that review was either just and overly negative person looking for an outlet to express some pent up personal frustration, or had never actually made a movie and did not understand the mechanics of what actually go in to making a film. The camera used obviously had a pro non consumer level manual focus lens which was discernable by the clear focus in the foreground and the blurred background showing proper depth of field. Soft matter also has some comedic animated sequences which were very well done. Lots of bright colors in the movie which I really liked. The story is a bit of a horror sci fi, and is balanced out with some comedic dialogue which helps the film flow along at a nice pace. The creature makeup was also very well done. I would recommend Soft Matter to any fan of indie horror/sci fi.

Absolute garbage
horrorgasm17 May 2020
This is a horribly acted pathetic cringefest from one of those godawful scam production companies that pumps out absolute minimum effort garbage like Shark Exorcist to make a few dollars off idiots or launder money or whatever it is they're up to. It's not even worth getting into the details. It's like an awful millennial nightmare of random scenes and cringey sO rAnDoM humor. Wow an unexplained monster suddenly appears and does a silent solo dance number for absolutely no reason, then a scientist comes out and makes a joke about his nice shoes, the joke being that the scientist mentions the existence of the nice shoes. Wow, isn't that so random and funny? Wow the female lead has a tattoo mustache! Isn't that so WACKY AND HILARIOUS? Barf.

Fun fact: see how this movie has only one user review? and that it's a 10? Well if you look at their past reviews you'll see it's all 10 star reviews for movies just like this. In fact, most of them seem to be from the same company. Isn't that odd? IN FACT if you go look up their name you can easily find that they actually work for the company, Wild Eye Releasing! You can see him openly shilling his/their products all over the place like the scumbag he apparently is.

If you still think you should check this movie out at this point, congratulations, you're exactly the kind of moron that keeps these garbage scam movie companies in business.Absolute garbage. YouTubers are making better horror than this.

Ya'll are haters

This movie wasn't supposed to be a masterpiece. It's obviously a passion project with people who are genuinely enjoying themself, and what's not to love? It's fun and good for some tongue-in-cheek horror, that does WAY more with WAY less than most of the big budget horror garbo you get nowadays. This movie is best described as equal parts hip hop and slime. Not everything is perfect, definitely flawed but definitely not worth a paltry 2.9, I mean come on guys! I mean this with all sincerity, it's like a zillion times better than "The House That Jack Built" that also came out in 2018. Like a helluva lot more soul and entertainment value, I'll tell ya that.

If you like artsy/indie movies and horror, without the pretentious BS, give it a watch!
