- Matt arrives at the Allison home to find Carolee being bothered by a constantly ringing phone. Carolee wails that the press has already convicted Steve with a front page story in the morning paper, and the vultures are calling her for a comment. When Carolee refuses to go away to the country, Matt cautions her that she had better grow a thick layer of insulation because it's going to get worse when the trial begins. Carolee is relieved by Matt's revelation that Steve has finally confessed everything to Adam Reynolds. Nick bristles when Hendryx deems Steve a bad apple spoiling Hope Memorial. Later, the two quarrel over Hendryx's petty jealousy of Matt and the abrasive manner in which Hendryx treats Mike. Afterward, Hendryx demands a meeting with Matt to arrange a reprimand and an apology. Nick visits Carolee. He tells her that he punched John but worries that he only ended up hurting Althea. Carolee admits that the first time she met John, she felt that he picked up on tensions around him and was amused by them. Consequently, she doesn't think he's truly an understanding or caring man. Reynolds meets with Steve and says that after reviewing the case, he wants Steve to appear before the grand jury when it convenes, because Reynolds now believes him and thinks the jury will, too. When he realizes that Reynolds is asking him to confess everything in open court, thus exposing Carolee, he angrily refuses.—Skip Eastport
