Nightvisiting
Prismark105 November 2016
Like the Moffat era Doctor Who this episode starts off by giving as a quick build up of Tanya's parents, how they met, got married, had children and then he suddenly died.

In the second anniversary of his death, he returns in Tanya's bedroom and behind him is a vine that stretches through the streets of London. In fact there are a lot of vines coiling around the streets of London and turning it into spaghetti junction.

However Miss Quill also gets a visit from a woman who claims to be her dead sister and Ram is visited by his dead girlfriend. The Lam Kin take the form of your dead loved ones and want humans to choose closure for their feelings towards those that have departed. The question to consider is, are they just feeding on the emotions of the vulnerable?

There is a lot of talking in this episode, it is a good job that actress Vivian Oparah is up to the task, wanting to believe this entity with her father's face yet also cautious. Miss Quill provides spikiness and some grisly humour as to what she wants to do with her sister. The only misstep is the sudden burgeoning relationship between Ram and April.

However this was an odd episode. Tentacles all over London, where were the police or UNIT as people were being whisked away?

Good episode, lot of improvement

Warning: Spoilers
The episode was better if you would compare it to the last one. It isn't as fast-paced as previous episodes, and explores a different kind of environment with an interesting new alien. The alien is one that can create images from the dead, and makes them talk to the persons who grief over them. It tries to suck them up (or something) to gain energy. It is a very interesting thing for a person to talk to someone who they know is dead, and Tanya being that person is a smart choice, as it had been teased a bit throughout the series. The actress sometimes sounds monotone, saying emotional things that come out as something you would say regularly, while still giving you a feeling that she is sad/angry at her father but still misses him.

The ending of the episode is cool, having Ms. Quill drive a bus through the aliens' cord. Then it just goes back into the space/time rift, which felt like an anticlimax. I bet they probably will come back, as this is going to be the enemy of another episode.

Love plays an important part in this story, as Charlie's boyfriend gets kicked out of his house and gets an offer to live with Charlie for the time being. April and Ram talk about being sensitive and kiss, something that will be explored in later episodes (the NEXT TIME trailer shows something resembling them kissing and then having sex) so I'm interested to see how that will play out.

Ms. Quill got an opportunity to show that she can be a developed character, and did not disappoint. She got her moment on the screen, and it looks like she will have more in later episodes.

This episode looks to be like Patrick Ness gains better ideas that are in line with the Whoniverse, and I am interested to see what will happen next.

Warning: Spoilers
London is visited by a strange and powerful force, The Lankin, Vine like tentacles pour out of Coal Hill School, they literally feed on grief, appearing as lost loved ones, all it takes is one touch. Tanya is visited by the form of her late father, who sieges her with an emotional bombardment, one she must resist in order to stay alive. Miss Quill faces the same dilemma, visited by her sister.

The first two episodes divided opinion somewhat, whereas Nightvisiting truly did announce the arrival of Class. This episode has set the bar much higher, and if the show can reach these heights, I see a future. The story of Tanya and her dad takes the show into new territory, it was able to reach a level of emotional engagement like never before. Anastasia Hille was excellent as Quill's sister.

Good visuals, this looked fantastic, powerful images of loved ones being hoisted away. Excellent 9/10

Wasted potential

Warning: Spoilers
It took three attempts for Patrick Ness to create a memorable alien, but at least he managed it in the end. The alien in this episode is a cruel one. It takes the form of dread loved ones in an attempt to feed on the vulnerable. Why it has to do this in order to feed doesn't make much sense but just go with it... It's a pretty freaky alien, with Krynoid-like tentacles that wrap around its victims.

So it's a shame that the potential that this alien brings doesn't result in a good episode. There are a number of reasons for this, but the main one is that the actress that plays Tanya is terrible. Everything she says sounds either robotic or fake and for someone who's seeing her dad for the first time in years she has a curiously monotone voice. But it's not only her acting that's bad. The script doesn't even give any room for emotional moments. Instead, it makes Tanya deal with her dad's reappearance like a problem that needs solving rather than a reunion that should tear her apart emotionally. Both her acting and her script are so lousy. And it doesn't help that she spends literally the entire episode in her room talking to her dad. This wouldn't be so bad if Tanya and her dad weren't the main focus of the episode but they get more emphasis and screen time than the other characters.

Some stuff is great. Ms Quill continues to delight. She has a fascinating conversation with her sister granting her character further depth but it also a nice touch of humour. Honestly, I wish the episode had spent more time on that and less time with Tanya, because Ms Quill is (so far) Class's redeeming quality. She even saves the day by driving a double-decker bus through the tentacles!
