Underrated on IMDB
valeka-562502 February 2020
I'm writting this comment just to say that here on IMDB this movie is so underrated. I usually consider that movies rated less than 6 are bad so I almost missed this one. Quite decent and funny family comedy. Comparing with current Hollywood commedies rating can go up to 9/10.

... belongs to an age of antideluvian macho men ...
"Es por tu bien" is based on a premise which belongs to an age of antideluvian macho men I really thought Spain no longer had

maybe i was wrong; maybe they still have them or they pumped up the stereotypes for comedic purpose. There is a German version titled "Es ist zu deinem Besten" released in 2020.

It also appears that there is also a version in Italian titled "È per il tuo bene" also 2020.

As of April 2021 neither have reviews; but it shows that the storyline resonates if it was remade in others EU countries

But let us for a minute go back to the premise: these 3 men deal with their daughters as if they were property; quasi-cattle. They wish to separate them from their in their eyes "undesirable" boyfriends/fiancés and will stop at nothing to achieve that aim

If this came from 1620 or even 1720 or let us say 1820 we would laugh and applaud but the fact that it is made in 2017 after 40 years of feminism and gradual painfully slowly creeping equality for women really sticks in your maw and there is ABSOLUTELY no bypassing that ...

Is it funny? No. Unless you have the mind of a 6-year old in the body of a right-wing quinquagenerian lawyer

Was very disappointed. Spanish Cinema is most often progressive and thought-inducing

This harks back to the days of the Caudillo; and really unapologetically

The acting tho is excellent from all and it is really well-made so will give it a 6.

Amusing comedy about three jealous and strict parents , giving rise to an endless number of gags that work surprisingly well
ma-cortes1 August 2023
Very fun situations and an acting chemistry that result in a fresh and really attractive comedy . Es por tu bien(2017) or It's for Your Own Good (World-wide, English title) deals with the worst nightmare of a father , it is that his daughter grows up and introduces her to her boyfriend who, inevitably he will be a despicable guy who is only looking for one thing , his beloved daughter. That horrible day has just arrived for three angry fathers : conservative Arturo (Jose Coronado) married to wealthy Isabel (Pilar Castro) , Chus (Javier Cámara) and hard-working Poli (Roberto Álamo). As their daughter h daughters have become engaged with outlandish guys have engaged dreadlock Álex (anarchist , Perroflauta Miki Esparbé whose rebel ideals clash fiercely with the conservative Arturo ; Chus and his wife Olga (María Pujalte) discover that their daughter Marta is dating troubled , drug-dabbling Dani (Bernardeau) ; and Poli's daughter Sara (Andrea Ros) is dating Ernesto (Mottola) , an Argentine playboy who works as an artistic photographer and is actually Poli's former colleague .

This is a fine and crazy comedy starred by a varied group of young actors giving great consistency to the film. It packs amusement , witty gags , funny Spanish clichés , comical incidents , tongue-in-cheek , surrealist comedy , working surprisingly well , though including conventional pitfalls and anything else . A total blockbuster in 1997, with a million and a half viewers and more than 9 million euros collected . It is starred by three good actors Javier Cámara, Jose Coronado , Roberto Álamo who give life to three parents willing to achieve their plans and put into practice any crazed or pathetic scheme in order to prevent their daughters from dating their horrible boyfriends. As Manuel Burque and Joseph Gatell, the scriptwriters of this funny comedy, explain : this is a comedy that arises when facing two universal and recognizable instincts in any family nucleus : the hatred between brothers-in-law and the hatred of a father towards his daughter's boyfriend. When our three protagonists discover that their three daughters have had three boyfriends that they believe will ruin their lives , they realize that the instinct of paternal protection is stronger than any disagreement and they will enter together in a spiral of madness to get them out of the way . In the middle this spiral hides a hilarious journey of friendship , tolerance and paternal love in which, in the end, the three parents will understand that their sons-in-law are also family . Along with these three great actors, Javier Cámara , Jose Coronado , Roberto Álamo, considered to be the best in Spanish cinema, appearing here and there a notorious group of accredited supporting actors such as : María Pujalte , Carmen Ruiz , , Pilar Castro , Silvia Alonso , Georgina Amorós , Andrea Ros , Miki Esparbé , Luis Callejo , María Hervás and Manolo Solo.

Third feature film by director Carlos Therón , after the successful ¨Fuga de cerebros 2¨or ¨Brain Drain 2¨ and ¨Impavido¨. This unprejudiced and very likeable comedy motion picture was well directed by Carlos Therón , perhaps his greatest success . His direction manages to surprise us and have its own identity as a comedy made in Spain . Carlos is an acceptable craftsman who has previously written and directed ¨Fuga de cerebros¨, ¨Impavido¨ , ¨Es por tú bien¨ , ¨Operación Camarón¨ and has made episodes of notorious TV series such as : ¨Olmos Y Robles¨ , ¨El Chiringuito De Pepe¨, ¨Hombres De Paco¨ and ¨El Barco¨ .Es por tu bien (2017) unsures you have a big time in the movie theater or watching on a large TV set.

This is a heart warming and very funny movie but a lot would be lost if you depend on the translation.

Worst Spanish comedy in years
rmtollens26 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I love comedies from Spain. Interesting premise. As a father, I would hate to see one of my daughters waste away her life with a do nothing loser, and would definitely do something about it. But In the end, all male protagonists accepted their girls' bad love decisions. Don't waste your time with this movie.

Beautiful and dignified ending...

Warning: Spoilers
Three brothers-in-law try to get their daughters to dump their unwanted boyfriends, with lots of mess and fun.

A light and fun comedy, dads against brothers-in-law, in some cases you can even support the father-in-law as in the case of the school junkie, also in the case of the school friend too, however the anarchist is exaggeration, very fun and funny, despite the cliché and predictability everyday scenes are cute the fight between couples is very cute and young people are slightly inconsequential and they are just young, and so passionate and so cute that I even got emotional at the end, beautiful and dignified ending...
