An Auspicious Beginning
Samuel-Shovel2 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The pilot of The Good Place begins with the newly deceased Eleanor (played by Kristen Bell) arriving in the afterlife. (Or at least her version of the afterlife). We quickly learn there is the juxtaposed good/bad afterlife destinations which are prevalent across the world's many different religions and beliefs. A brief dump of exposition from Ted Danson informs us of the world we are being introduced with. Every action you take on Earth gives a score. To end up in The Good Place, you must finish your life with a positive margin. Luckily Eleanor ended up upstairs. But there is one problem...Eleanor shouldn't be here. She was mixed-up and should currently be in hell. Now her and her "soul-mate" must figure out a way to keep her from the bad place. Can she learn to be a good person like the other residents?

It's interesting that NBC would put out a show like this. I never really consider them cutting edge or risk-takers. Anytime someone brings the concept of religion, heaven/hell, and the afterlife as the main focal point to a show, they're asking to stir up controversy. But here (in the pilot episode at least), I think this show deals with it well. They brush aside the issue of "who was right" and give a little bit of credit to all the world's religions. It doesn't name a winner and risk alienating parts of its audience. Instead, it takes a more universal approach. I'm sure this will still upset some out there but you can't please everyone out there, especially when a show has a premise like this.

But the pilot is a good introduction to a concept with a lot of potential. Danson is lovely as always and it's nice to see Bell getting her own center-stage project. The supporting cast doesn't get too much screentime to start off but feel promising as well. This is something I will definitely continue to watch.

Everything is wonderful!

Warning: Spoilers
Ah, the pilot. Generally known for being the least creative episode of the series, with yet to find its own voice. This pilot, however, far exceeded my expectations. I wasn't expecting such a brilliant yet stupid yet smart yet ridiculous episode right from the start, but this episode delivered in almost every category. This is, by far, the best pilot episode of a show I have seen this year.

Lemme tell you why.

This episode simply introduces the (what looks to be) five main characters and the settings around them. It has great world building, summarizing the Good Place as a whole in the first few minutes, already having questionable moments, like the point system, for example. The land of the Good Place also leads to some brilliant gags, like our pal Doug Forsett, who guessed about 92% right about what happens when you die, or the ways that you get and lose points (poison a river, use Facebook as a verb, etc.). There are so many ways this show can go and not go wrong, which is a good sign for the future seasons.

The characters are incredibly charming, even if some of them happen to be a "condescending bench". Every main character is so well defined in these short 22 minutes that you can already tell what kind of person they were in the living world. Well, except Jianyu, is not sure about him yet.

The plot of this episode is very well written, and (as I mentioned before) has so much potential to go whichever way it wants! I doubt that Eleanor will tell Michael about "the mistake" until, possibly, the 3rd to last episode (at least), but there are so many different ways this show can go that I'm sure this won't be the only focus of the season.

"Everything is Fine!" is a brilliant pilot to this series, with jokes around every corner (a lot of pausing is needed!), witty characters, great acting from all of the actors, and a story that captivated me from the start! I am so excited to see more!

Nice Beginning

My son talked me into watching this show. I sat back thinking, "Another lame sitcom." Well, it turned out that the characters, the plot, and direction, not to mention the writing, are hilarious. We have a central character who finds herself in this perfect world through a freak accident and who admits she "doesn't belong here. So what does she do. She brings her disgusting, selfish personality into "heaven."

A Great Pilot.

Pilots for every tv show seem to be on a spectrum of terrible to awful to alright to decent to okay and you get the picture.

This pilot, however, is great it captures you from the get-go. Each character is unique and captivating and their chemistry is brilliant. You're sad when the episode ends. But excited for the next to the episode to watch to see how the story unfolds.

The Good Pilot

At long last I'm getting around to watching The Good Place after so much critical and viewer acclaim over the years. I felt I was missing a lot by missing out on The Good Place. Episode 1, the beginning, was a nice and gentle start that raised questions about right and wrong in the context of eternal life.

A bad person in a Good place
AvionPrince163 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The episode was quite interesting and introduced the new rules of the afterlife. The good and the bad place. The good and the bad person. Everything seem pretty normal and we met also that character play by Christen Bell who is good, i mean its what we thought at the beginning. So yeah the big surprise its that she land on the good place and seem that they made a mistake with her and her placement. We met also her soulmate. Who will try to help her to be good in this good place and cover her by the same occasion.

The episode was quite surprising and let us know more about the problem and the world of that episode and about that women who land in the wrong place. Im still curious to see more and what they will talk about in the future episodes.

Pilot
Prismark1019 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Eleanor (Kirsten Bell) died in what was a bizarre shopping trolley accident and arrived in the afterlife at the good place, which is highly selective.

She meets Michael (Ted Danson) who explains the concept of 'the good place' to her and neighbourhood that will be her home. She meets her soulmate Chidi (William Jackson Harper) and she confesses to him that there has been a mistake.

Eleanor is not human rights lawyer who saved people from death row but sold shonky medicine to old people rather successfully.

From the first episode it looks like a fantasy based sitcom very much in the fashion of Bewitched or I dream of Jeannie but updated with some bad language which is censored because it is not allowed in the good place.

I think Danson and Bell sell the concept well, the production design is rather nice and I like the idea that all the religions got about 5% of it right.

I am not sure from the pilot that this could be a long running show with Eleanor trying to hold back that she does not belong in this place.
