Loved this show!!
cmaglaqui10 March 2018
I don't usually go for fantasy type dramas, but this one looked intriguing, so I decided to watch it. I'm glad I did. It was very enjoyable. I like everything about it, and hated to see it end, as with most other Korean dramas. This one was not only fun and humorous, but also very cinematic. I even had fun with all the costumes and backdrops of the show. Nicely casted and great storyline. Watch it! You won't be disappointed.

Wonderful, romantic and so funny!

I really loved this series. I wasn't sure about the mermaid aspect but as usual I was pleasantly surprised at how well it was done. The characters were lovely, most especially the leading lady. She was so pretty, vulnerable, tough and endearing all at the same time. The were many really funny moments in this without any over-the-top side characters. And the balance of tension, drama, comedy and romance was perfect. One of my favourite K-dramas.

Basically I never see much TV series. Cause it's boring to me see all part day by day. But after watch Legend of the Blue Sea my thought was totally change about TV series. OMG! It's make me cry, make me Happy, make me angry, confused and different kind of feelings. Really really I love Legend of the Blue Sea. And thanks the Legend of the Blue Sea team to give us such a thing like that.

Fantasy still justifies the truth of existince of a lovestory

Its been long I have been watching K drama . This movie plot is based on how a lost love story happens again because love finds its way. The story is based on the innocent love of a man and a mermaid . The actor Lee Min Ho and Jun Ji-hyun have justified their roles beautifully . I would not shy away saying I like Lee Min Ho, he is too handsome and his different movie character maked me fall in love with him again and again, kind of boxset boyfriend he is to me . Actress Jun Ji-hyun justifies the role of the mermaid. Her features and acting skill looks inncoent to justify a mermaid. The other character in the movie are well potrayed and acted. Its the negative character that maked the protagonist outshine the movie . The character Lee Ji-hoon played leaves a greater effect . The character Lee Hee-joon plays is well potrayed . The actor makes the best supporting role . Shin Won-ho , Shin Hye-sun and Hong Jin-kyung keep the movie light and humour effect makes it relaxing through the tough story line. In short the story line is very captivating and keeps glue to the end . Its a must watch . I can watch it repetitive times.

picks up slowly but is worth the wait

I watched the first few episodeds and was like 'meh' -especially because when the mermaid first reaches land we see lots of clichee's, it's very much been there done that- especially if you've seen Disney's version of the litle mremaid. Also, the mermaid is a bit annoying at the beginning but she gets better. Having said that, It was cute enough to keep me going and I'm glad that I did. It's a love story told well, the supporting characters are good, the acting is superb, and her tail is amazing. I really debated whether to give this a 7 or 8- because I did end up loving this show- but because of the so-so beginning which could potentially put you off I ended up with a seven.

🐟Tale About An Angel Fish Out Of 🌊 °7.2° °VG°
50fiftillidideeBrain13 January 2022
🐚LOTBS is a dreamy onscreen excursion about a plunge into the pool of 💞. Roundabout there's beautiful scenery & other trappings that will hook a viewer. Based on a Joseon era fable, it tells the love story of a man, Heo 'double hooks' Jun-jae ↪JJ (Lee Min-ho) & a mermaid, Shim Cheong ↪ Shimmy (Jun Ji-hyun) that is destined to end tragically. Even more tragic, is how they are fated to repeat this loop again, perhaps again-lessly.

⛵Ep1 sails to Spain, dazzling the viewer with refreshing scenery (though the 🎥 location is actually Palau). We meet JJ, who's in a sub-set of con artists. As if Lee Min-ho's looks aren't mesmerizing enough, JJ has the ability to spot hypnotize his 'marks' if quick tweaks or lures are needed. He looks in a person's eyes while speaking softly & flicking his lighter around. This is usually enough to distract the poor saps long enough for his gang of fleecers & scalers to work their agenda: Stealing prirate💰booty. These 'pirates' are all people as crooked as a barrel of hooks. As JJ& Co just steal ill-gotten 💴, their crimes cannot be reported to the police, nor the coast guard. Thus, these boys aren't so bad... They're just lovable scamps, really, like 🐬dolphins.

⛲JJ's in Spain for 🏖 after a big haul. He's shocked to encounter a confused woman in his hotel room. She's a real strange 🐠. Shimmy cannot talk, she has curious cuts & scrapes on her feet, & she's wearing one of his 👕, while looking quite the 🐡 out of water. He has the police take her away to cold storage. We learn, though, that this pair will not escape each other. There are not plenty of other 🐟 in the sea for them. They're in a school of 2.

🐙JJ has a picture caught in his head of how pitiful "she" looked, & he can't 🐡 it out. She didn't try to con him. She didn't steal anything either, or even 🐠 for compliments... Obviously, she has other 🐡 to fry. Most significantly, on her lovely wrist is a jade bracelet that could be worth over $6mil. That ain't 🐟 food. Swept off his feet in a tide of compulsion to care for her (or at least the $6mil) he tells the police he won't press charges.

🐳Once she's released, he soon encounters her, still near the police station, crouched under an overhang, & looking utterly forlorn. It turned out to be a snag: He can't cut the line in which she & he are tangled. Before he snaps out of it, he's already fed her and taken her shopping for 👗 & 👠. Soon after, they escape from hitmen sent by a "victim" who wants JJ to sleep with the fishes. To Jun-jae's amazement, Shimmy is extraordinarily strong, & she can hold up in a tight spot. She's sort of pretty (scorchin hot) too... Hypnotized, his will drained, #the 🌊 crashes over him: He's amazed by her! He's catfish crazy over her! He takes the deep dive from a high cliff, & crashes hard for this exotic, yet perplexing beauty.

🚣Like sunlight beams in water, when JJ is dreaming, we get flashes of Past-life Regression showing their woeful experiences in the Joseon era. Flashes later morph into fashbacks of past-life memories for Heo Jun-jae, along with several other characters that are being spun out and sucked back into the whirlpool alongside the two big fishes, our protagonists.

🔹Things we learn about mermaids🔹

🔹Mermaid tears become pearls: In the Joseon version, the mermaid is locked up and forced to manufacture pearls.

🔹Mermaids have super strength: This debones many situations.

🔹Mermaids heal rapidly: This is also a lifesaver on occasions.

🔹Mermaids are highly intelligent, learning at the speed of sonar: Shimmy teaches herself Korean by watching dramas all night. She picks up pearls of wisdom along with culture, quickly surpassing JJ & Co regarding the latest looks, lures, and expressions.

🔹Mermaids can wash away memories: We see several memory wipeouts.

🔹When mermaids beach themselves for love, & it's not reciprocated, they'll die. The same thing applies when they are separated from their love. It will kill them. Shimmy jumps in anyway with 2 feet. She won't be like a cat that will eat a fish, but not get its feet wet. She commits fully.

🔸Things we learn about Jun-jae🔸

🔸His father's a Duke, um... I mean a CEO, & he's one cold 🐡. When JJ was young, his father cast out his mother in order to bring in a mistress, um, new mistress of the vessel. Once divorced, his mother abandoned ship, believing that JJ would be better off in his father's house, where he would want for nothing. She drifted away with very little salvaged from the divorce.

🔸Stepmom turned out to be a fishy character. She's bait wrapped around poison. They needed her like a 🐠 needs a bicycle. His father is hooked, only seeing the bait. JJ escapes the net & departs home, while in HS, to swim in other waters.

🔸A chummy con man with a fish eating grin, Jo Nam-doo, takes him in (uses him for scams) & teaches JJ the trade, or, teaches a man to fish🎣, as it were. Nam-doo may be friendly (most con men have "friendly" mastered before their first grift) but he's serious about his trade, from lips to tale, & he's hella serious about 💰. Don't be confuzzled on the subject.

🔸While JJ has been looking for his mother, she's been hiding 'under decks' avoiding detection, somehow believing that's better for JJ. (Big plot weakness).

🏊The show freestyles back to SK. We see our mermaid arrive in 🌇Seoul with no clue what to do. Her first friends are small 🐡: A bag lady, ahem, - excuse me - a #homeless woman, & a little girl instructer-&-scolder. It's as cute as it sounds. Eventually she learns to handle herself, including learning to 🍺 like a 🐟.

💦Without ruining any big splashes, there's a tackle box of fun gear in LOTBS. There's chases with guns, flying 🐠 jumping off of cliffs, cons gone bad, cons gone good, & cons long gone. We're introduced to additional players from the Joseon era as the show unfolds. There's a secondary romance & other lively side characters. There's several shots of beautiful waves & water, & shore. We see escape on a 🚲, a An Affair To Remember moment, secrets & more secrets, messages in & on vessels from the past, & a backlit shot of an exquisite kiss while a fin fishtails dreamily in the water. At the show's end, JJ has a 🐡 of another species dropped in his aquarium of friends, & it's amusing.

🌅There is tension over the issue of fate, & whether the repetition of the past, & fate itself, can be altered. The primary theme in LOTBS is, in the words of Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor in Terminator 2 Judgement Day: "There is no fate but what we make". JJ will not accept the outcome that seems fated to be. At both ends of the fishing pole, the past & present, he works actively against fate, believing that his actions & his decisions determine his future🌄.

🦑We see a bit of a fashion show. They're far downstream with the couture. Shimmy is beautiful enough to make Jacques Cousteau come back from the grave, but if she's hungry, or if she just watched a Bruce Lee movie, or read Moby Dick, avoid her like a Great White 🦈. Jun Ji-hyun is swimmingly at ease, playing at first an awkward newbie-to-everything, & later a naturally & affably uninhibited woman. Her comedy scenes, such as when she's eating, are clean nets, unslimed by the juvenile, trash filled, slobbering pig humor we see Hollywood drooling out. This hottie can actually ACT. It underscores how condescending Hollywood is to their audience. Afterall, isn't their declining quality why we love Kdramas?

🏄Besides the regular obstacles, misunderstandings, & outstanding warrants, there's also criminal matters that must be investigated. They drop hooks with a tantalizing bit in which Jun-jae injects himself into an investigation & starts ordering the detectives around. They start complying before they realize what's going on. It's straight Mcdonald's fish sandwich&🍟. So tasty.

🛥While LOTBS is mostly treasure, & as a romance it's on solid ground, pertaining to film craft, it's a bit out to sea, as follows:

🦀LOTBS is only trying to be a surfs-up-fun-in-the-sun romantic cruise, not a deep water expedition, so it has less depth than Jun-jae's feelings for Shi-ah.

🌀It suffers from overdone, too oft seen Kdrama devices.

🔻MMP Missing/misplaced parent(s). Here's yet another show where parents (especially a mother) get separated from children. I haven't seen one Kdrama yet that has separated couples co-parenting. It must be frowned upon in Korea. No reasonable explanation is laid down for Jun-jae's mother to hide. They should have been tidier with it.

🔻MSS (Mandatory Separation Syndrome, where couples, once they commit, are physically separated for a period of time). It suffers a minor shipwreck & takes on water due to MSS. Anyone familiar with Kdramas knows what I mean. This is one of the worse ones I've seen. It's that 4th day with company in your house. The show threw a few 🐟 too many into the aquarium, crowding it out & making the presentation worse, not better.

🍤But the worst thing about Ep21 is how they cut the line on nearly every Mermaid rule they had reeled in earlier. It kept stinking more as time sailed on & freshness waned. That isn't good filmmaking. Just be warned that Ep21 could near filet you, if consistentcy is important to you.

🚤One final caution: In Ep1, subtitles can fly by too quickly, especially when Jun-jae is doing the hypnosis. After a couple times early in Ep1 it rarely, if ever, happens again. Don't be thwarted by that.

🏝For cute escapism, LOTBS is like riding some perfect waves (until we hit a bit of chop at the end). The last thing we see, as LOTBS pulls up ⚓ and 🚢voyages away, is a couple sitting on a bench watching the turquoise waves from a snowy beach, in a lovely & serene Bon-voyage.

It is good enough to like it
mihran_3 February 2022
The show is about a mermaid and a human who are fated to love each other even after they reborn. In this show the story is connected to the characters' past where they had ill fated relationship. As the show goes on it basically is like a parallel world's story where almost all the characters are there too. The mermaid and the human tries to stop the history from repeating in the show. The romance is really cute and nice, however, the show was dragged on for too long which I think was unnecessary and they even rushed a bit in the last two episodes after stretching the show for too long.

Too boring for my liking
vickyvengeance8 July 2022
Only reason i started watching was because of Jun Ji hyun. But even she could not lift up such a boring script. I somehow dragged and struggled and reached episode 12 but i can't take it anymore. I think it would rate as one of the most boring series i have ever watched in my life. No romance no build up no story it is just dragging and stretching. Now i feel some of the fan comments might be from fake ids.

Super LOVE THIS!!!
rica-3080417 October 2020
Lee Min Ho in Legend of the Blue Sea (2016) ( same writer as CLOY) I like all the characters which make each of them handsome but there are some that really capture the HEART ( Hyun Bin my 1st & now my 2nd ) LMH - I love his smile, how he laughs, his charm, his sweetness especially here. Jun Ji Hyun is my favorite Korean actress and they make a great couple with Lee Min Ho!!! And finally kissing scenes!!!! very rare in kdrama! THE BEST kissing scenes so far among all the 50 kdramas I have watched. My favorite ones are the in the stairs and their goodbye

Warning: Spoilers
Interesting story, only too long... Legend of the blue sea is about a mermaid who fells in love with a con man, after meeting him in Spain, and decides to find him in Seoul. However, she had erased his memory beforehand and so he can't remember her. Meanwhile, the drama shows the love story between the two main characters in a different era and how they have now reincarnated into the present lovers. I divide this drama into three parts, the first one which is the interesting one, the second one which is the romantic one and the last one that was kind of boring and more family drama like. The plus points for this drama are the performances, especially from the leading lady. She was really good and funny pretending to be a creature from the sea learning the human behaviour and way of living. The chemistry, however, between the two leads was weak...The family drama was interesting and the step mother\villain was really the ideal villain type that you want to see behind bars. Of course, when the family drama started progressing, the romance and the mermaid affairs got the second lead. And though it was entertaining, the last few episodes could have been combined into one and that would have made this drama perfect. However, they just prolonged the story by adding constant flash backs again and again which was tiring. So, 6 out of 10.

I've only just finished this drama and I already wanna watch it again, I have no idea how I have left this on my watch list for so long,It is quite possibly my favourite drama it has a bit of everything and that's what I look for when searching for dramas. All the actors were amazing in their roles and I'm gonna go and find their other work to see if it matches up to this masterpiece!

It is a disappointment drama. Perhaps i ecpect too high with this subperb casting. I do not feel the chemisty of two top noted superstars. And the plot is not written well.

Female lead is repeating the character of her role in My love from the star. Lee as a cheating and poor guy, is to me, unacceptable.

A total disappointment. A complete waste of the cast.

too cheesy, to magical.
janeta-213171 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
What was good -

1. The drama started off as quite an interesting story - the con man's tricks, intrigues, crimes, getting-aways etc. adding a lot of tempo and suspense. But only in the first 5-6 episodes. Then everything slowed down badly.

2. Some physiological moments in the beginning were well portrayed, eg.: - the mermaid following a man who does not even remember her, or trying to adapt to the world like learning to eat, etc. Was a promising beginning.

What was bad:

1. after 6 episode the drama slowed down badly, lost momentum, was dragging on and on.

2. it felt like in the middle of the shooting the producers decided t target a different audience - high school girls. here the drama began to lose on its maturity, slipping into nonsense cheesiness. Also It felt like a copycat of romantic scenes looked up in other high-ranking dramas.

3. the ending was extremely disappointing. Of course it had to end well, but possibly, avoiding all the typical romantic clichés and poor script logic. Was not intelligent or smart or interesting. Very predictable, have-seen-it already, too wordy.

4. The whole film one kept asking oneself - why mermaid? Why so much "kids book" magic? It could have been an exciting story if the female lead had some other physical defect or maybe even a weird psychic ability. The drama was unnecessarily "childishly magical" making is hard to watch for more mature audience. Can imagine lots of high-school mermaid emogies and stickers, but featuring in leading life style magazines - probably not so much.

All in ll, not a high flyer with western fans that usually prefer more realistic romance, higher tempo and more complex, intricate story lines.

Good story with little or no loose ends. The characters are lovable and each arc was thoroughly explored and explained.

Kudos also for such a good ending. Normally korean series often mess up their endings. But this one totally was satisfying. 10/10 :)
