The ART of WAR!!
toolman-0735617 November 2016
Battlefield 1 is amazing, level design, campaign, multiplayer, sound, graphics are all stunning here in perfect 60 fps and 1080p and 4k. There are a few bugs and glitches but they were recently fixed with the latest 2gb patch. There are 6 multiplayer modes, Conquest, rush, TDM, Domination, war pigeons. A new mode Operations was also added. The campaign is sadly only 5 hours long but it has 5 amazingly heavy story telling, wonderful characters and some strong powerful war moments. I have to give Battlefield 1 a 9/10 for an amazing performance from EA and DICE. Try it, Buy it, Cherish it cause there will only ever be 1 Battlefield 1!!

One of the greater in the series!
jullebull27 February 2019
Battlefield 1 first of all comes with a special concept to tell a story about WW1. I think they did this so good. I really enjoyed the campaign. I mean they had variations of missions, so there wasn't just dirty trenches. We had tanks, planes, variations of locations around the world. It had such interesting war stories, and although it was so short dice managed to build up the characters enoug. The stories are emotional and beautiful, every war story also brings a message. And from a historical view they made a great job. They made it so cinematic and that's a good thing! Oh and the look of the game. Battlefield looks clean, the structure, the weapon, characters escpeccially in cutscenes.

For the first time I've actually spent much time in multiplayer with this game. I loved everything with it. This was a fresh start and a new point of view after Battlefield 4. One of the greater games in the Battlefield franchise or maybe even in this genre.

Incredible storytelling, attention to detail, and gameplay
bryanv725 October 2016
Since this is a website primarily focused on movies, i am focusing on the campaign of Battlefield 1. From a cinematic and storytelling standpoint, Battlefield 1 has excelled where not many games have. The campaign consists of a few distinct stories of individuals throughout the span of the first World War. Battlefield 1 shows us a more personal view of war as seen through the eyes of the people who fought in it. Keeping in mind that it is still historical fiction, the stories and gameplay stick to mix of well crafted realism and exciting vignettes of action. From the introductory cinematics and mission i could tell that this game was something special. Being shown the harsh reality of war, and the humanness of all who fought in the war really brings me to a place that i haven't seen personally in a game; i was even getting a little choked up. The individual episodes of each character you play as have an undeniably cinematic feel to them, and blend both cutscenes and gameplay well. The characters and incredibly well acted and therefore believable in whichever role they play. The score is well crafted: moving when it needs to be and dramatic when called for. It has that nostalgic, 20th century military vibe, without being too in your face about it.

Battlefield 1 takes a great stride in wonderful gameplay and stellar storytelling that differentiates it from its predecessors and forces you to view it separate from any other game, as its own unique experience. I would recommend this game to anyone who appreciates attention to detail and history, and can enjoy a few well crafted stories.

This might be one of the best shooters ever made!
rarekutkop22 October 2016
Oh man, battlefield 1 nails it, this is a true masterpiece, from the campaign to the multiplayer. The story is truly amazing, the graphics are so detailed, the multiplayer is just god like. Everything about this game is perfect. the first mission is already so intense i can't even explain it, you just have to play it for yourself! Dice is a true and honest company the actually listen to their fans. First person shooter game rs wanted a world war game, and here they have one, and it is better then ever before. Unlike the company called Activison, But i am not going to talk about those corrupt human beings. I am so in love with this game and i can't wait to play it again after writing this review. This game truly gives you the classic feeling back about the awesome shooters back in the day's!

10/10 for this amazing piece of art!

Captures the harshness of World war one.
ED122304_TGG24 June 2019
The game has plenty of content, is a blast to play, and delivers on what you would expect for a war game. Not only that, it captures the violence, the harshness, and the feeling of world war one, the rubble and fire in the maps certainly adds to it

Best World War 1 game out there
magnusjhallan24 May 2019
The game's campaign mode (single player) really gives me the chills! The most gruesome, yet realistic and accurate World War 1 game to date.

The campaign focuses on many different aspects of the war which gives the player many stories throughout the game. Everything from battles in Somme to the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey. Instead of focusing on one protagonist, Battlefield 1 focuses on multiple, which makes the game that more unique from other FPS.

I recommend this game most for it's unique and challenging campaign story (play it on hard setting!) I haven't played the multiplayer mode so much, but I can tell you that it's all postive about that as well. FYI I care most about the single player in video games.

Singleplayer: 9,5/10 Multiplayer: 8/10

I hope to see other companies attempt to make more World War 1 games. Greetings for Norway

Great Game Featuring the Great War
hydroshock-8447828 February 2017
Some love to hate it, but I found this game one hell of a blast. The war stories are fairly entertaining, and I'll have to admit that the single player does improve over the previous campaigns, even though multiplayer is what still dominates, as in any other Battlefield game. The beta didn't feel that fun to me, but I am still glad I have this game a chance anyways.

First of all, you cannot go wrong with the graphics. It is so detailed and so sophisticated. It's like it's a polished game, and it's polish is polished as well. The destruction adds to it all, and you have a wonderful cinematic experience, online and offline. The battlefield has never looked this good... And the sound effects, as well as the soundtrack, is just amazing.

The gameplay is what one would normally expect out of a Battlefield game. Large, open maps (with a fair share of close quarters), vehicles, and of course, destruction. While I'm not a big fan of every single map in this title, they still look as beautiful as ever. Conquest returns, and is still satisfying as always. War pigeons is a new and fairly odd game mode, but it still delivers. And while other modes like TDM, Domination, and Rush return, the new mode that takes this game to a whole new level is Operations. Its mostly like a mix between Conquest and Rush, but story driven, and it feels like real combat and war strategy. No two matches are ever the same with this one.

What really caught my eye and still impresses me is the use of behemoths, giant, heavily armed vehicles used to aid a team being crushed by the other team. In my opinion, it beats "Levolution," although I was a fan of that too. But the behemoths are player controlled, offering an even more interactive conflict and experience. Even destroying them is a glorious act, so they are fun as long as they are in the server, no matter what.

Now just because I score a 10 for this game does not mean it's perfect. A few flaws may include the campaign being short, a few imbalances within maps, and that the vehicles sometimes appear only for the enemy (could be a coincidence). But the leveling and unlocking system could have been done better. The weapons aren't very abundant due to each gun having three different variations, and they are bought separately. Not that the game's economy is cheap, but there could have been a bit more creativity in the gun roster. Also, I find it strange that you unlock most guns at only level 3 for the classes, and then there's one gun to unlock at level 10, with nothing in between.

Anyways, those things aside, I've had a lot of fun with this game. I'm still not ready to decide whether or not it's my favorite Battlefield game, but it's definitely my game of the year for 2016. The underwhelming amount of guns may be bit of a bother, but I don't find it enough to look down on this game. It's a great buy, and it's still early. The DLCs and updates will bring more content. Yes, I know, the premium pass is expensive, but I am personally still happy with the base game. And I am aware that this isn't a very accurate representation of WWI, but don't forget that a game's priority is fun, not history lessons. Anyways, Battlefield 1 is highly recommended for shooter fans, especially for world war fans.

Good graphics, mediocre single player campaign
PenetratorGod13 October 2023
The only thing I liked about the game was the graphics. I'm not interested in the online side. I didn't like the single player mode at all. The stories were very boring and repetitive. For me, it was a game that would have been even below average if the graphics were not good. By the way Cod WW2 is definitely much better than BF1. BF games have never made games with as deep and detailed cinematic narrative as COD games. BF1's cinematics are terrible compared to COD WW2. The only reason for the game's popularity is the multiplayer. If you are not interested in this part at all, like me, you will probably be disappointed. Even if you don't play it, you don't lose much.

Battlefield - Disappointment 0-1
Oneirosophos17 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Due to the anniversary of WW1 I have done some research, some reading, because it is overshadowed by WW2 in all media. I had found that it was far greater the tragedy and I that it has a unique dark atmosphere. And when I watched the B1 trailer I was positively surprised. But that was not enough...

I have played all Battlefields. The only one that I really liked was the first one and the characters in Bad Company 1 & 2. The prologue was a bit too enthusiastic and suicidal. And then, I entered the menu. And the disappointment started taking over. 5 random characters in some critical (?) battles (?), from Western Front to Arabia tell their stories. The characters are interesting, but the gameplay is awful. I died a numerous times because of no instructions or guidelines and to add salt to insult, most missions were literally "capture the flag", ripping of any cinematic feeling that were trying to impose to the player. The maps are also uninteresting, if you have played any Battlefield before, you'll find these rather poor, although you have, once again, numerous ways to succeed in the mission. But not fool yourself, it's either "simply go straightforward" or "go stealthy before you go straightforward", while always blazing through waves of bots with boring AI's (who all speak most of the time German for some reason).

The effort was just not enough for this half-baked product. I guess the multiplayer is more interesting but I was never interested in the multi. It has so much potential that lies now wasted, in the trenches.

BF1 Review
Moviememmer30 October 2019
Pros:
  • Good campaign-stories
  • Great Gameplay
  • Amazing graphics
  • Online multiplayer still fun
  • Multiplayer Operations is great new mode
  • Realistic audio and sound work

Cons:
  • Campaign is pretty short
  • Grindy multiplayer progression

Verdict: Finally a good WWII shooter, thou not perfect but overall a good (but short) campaign paired with a good multiplayer is valued to a very solid Battlefield game that is worth buying.

Great Battlefield game
wyatthowell8 January 2017
Great Game! The weapons in this game are so realistic and well designed and the guns are all very easy to use. Unlike the other battlefields you have to unlock your weapons and spend money on them ( not real money). Very life-like, when playing as a sniper the sun is an actual factor in battlefield 1 and a very cool feature added. The game itself is very good the multiplayer is amazing with the same general modes like conquest, team death match etc. like the other battlefields have. Recommend for 13 year-old and maybe even mature 12 year-old. The game is not very gory the only time you really see blood is if you knife someone a little squirt of blood comes out but nothing very graphic.

The best one since Battlefield 3
residentgrigo13 April 2017
The series was on the right track regarding single player campaigns with Bad Company 1 and the dropped the ball till the barely connected (as it was secretly a stealth game) Hardline. This semi-reboot of the series though got about every single thing right that a shooter can do. The campaign is divided is 5,5 short stores that greatly vary in play stile. Avanti Savoia was my favorite, due to the well done flashback structure, and i liked Nothing Is Written the least, as the sneaking didn't feel right. The game also somewhat demonizes the German forces and don't expect much narrative depth. All of them are still memorable but the player jumping gimmick from the prologue should have been feature more than once. The unfairly overlooked Modern Combat spin-off introduced it btw. The multiplayer is pretty much what one would think it is. Meaning that it is way too fast to fit into the period, the guns are also too precise, but it works well, so who am i to argue. The new and very involved mode Operations is the highlight here. I can only conclude that this is the best overall shooter of the generation, with CoD: BO 3 as the runner up. 9/10

The Graphic is Good, BUT...
dawnlau23 November 2019
The graphic is good, it's a 2016 game after all. But there are still lots of bugs, although fewer than those in Battlefield 4, but still a lot! The level design is good in chapter 1, 2, 3, where you can drive tanks and planes. Chapter 4 is just normal. But chapter 5 is not good. Actually, it's awful with full of repetitive and unreasonable plot. It's overall a 7.5-or-8-out-of-10 game, worth to try.

Thank You
isaacwest-660011 March 2023
Battlefield 1 is one of the few games part of a regular franchise that managed to harness the passion of a massive developer, made more impressive by the fact they had one of the world more infamous publishers in EA. Yet, here we are. To this day it is widely considered one of the best installments into the FPS genre for various reasons. For me what really stood out was one of the greatest and most powerful soundtracks ever. The stories were also pretty good and underrated, but nothing insane, but as usual DICE nailed the massive multiplayer battle sequences that give you the opportunity to take up various roles and arms in a diverse selection of maps.

Thousands of players in a land of no developers
Heartburnt_Kid24 January 2021
If you are all about the single player campaign, then you won't be disappointed. War stories are executed well and depict the Great War brilliantly. Although most of the missions are more orientated on Hollywood action combat scenes and there is not much about the actual trench warfare, which was a major thing in WW1.

The multiplayer is the main attraction and they did it so badly. Maps are gorgeous but the location design behind them is horrendous. The point capture fiasco is like a tennis match. If one team captures point A, they will also lose point B resulting in nothing but people joining the defending team or simply leaving the game. Vehicles in this game are exploited beyond belief, people abuse the broken system and developers are doing absolutely nothing about it. To be specific we are talking about tanks that stay behind the front line spamming mortar fires and huge bombers in the sky dropping bombardment across the whole map making escapes nearly impossible. Cheaters are also present and developers again do nothing about it, there is nothing else to do but to believe in human decency. With the graphics this game could have been a phenomenal game about trench warfare and tactics, instead it turned into a grave pit for people running around the map like headless chickens and ignoring objectives.

Kaiser Chiefs
southdavid4 April 2024
I'm pretty late to this party, I accept, but the next game alphabetically on my Playstation Plus account was "Battlefield 1" and it's been a while since I engaged in a proper online shooter, so I was ready for this. I should say, I only played the base game, not any of the various expansions that came afterwards but even 8 years later, I found the servers still populated and I enjoyed my time quite a bit.

Set during the various theatres of war during World War 1, "Battlefield 1" sees players select one of four categories of character and engage in large scale wars for territory. The solders are customisable (within the four categories) in terms of which weapons, perks and skills they have and a good game requires a mix of the playing strategies to succeed. In addition, there is a single player mode, which sees you play as five unrelated characters, again in the varied locations that WW1 took place in completing a story.

Comfortably the best - and therefore with the biggest numbers still playing it is Operations mode. This sees a large battlefield split into smaller fields of war, each of which have a number of key locations. The attacking team has a limited number of lives to take those locations at the same time, and thus clear a section and move on to the next. Sometimes, depending on the campaign, at the completion of that the whole game may move to another nearby location and continue on. The attacking team will have three attempts to win, and on their second and third attempts will be supported by a "behemoth" a Zeppelin or armoured train to help the assault. As well as all that, the game regularly allows both sides use of specialist characters and vehicles to help with the attack or the defence.

I loved playing this mode, I am the sort of (evil) person that loves to play as a sniper, hiding at the back of the map trying to pick people off, but I did play as all four-character types, to level them up. A headshot snipe, in this game, is perhaps the single most satisfying split second, I've ever experienced as a gamer, the bell noise and the slight judder is perfect. The game looks and sounds great, occasionally, as with any game of this sort of size and complexity, it glitches but it's not overly common. The single player mode was fun too, whilst not particularly difficult it did provide a complete experience of the game, with only the stealth sections proving frustrating. There are lots of historical context provided to the battles and what they meant, with regards the overall war and, despite the bombastic nature, the game, particularly in the single player story, goes to great lengths to acknowledge that "war is hell".

I would say, there wasn't an awful lot to that base game though. The single player mode could probably be completed in a couple of settings, though there are challenges and collectables to locate within that which would extend it. There are probably six locations where Operations take place and you will see and get to know them all pretty quickly. There were four DLC packs that followed the release though, if you want to keep going.

I really liked my time with "Battlefield 1" and will look back on it fondly in years to come.

A Lasting Title on the Horrors of War
pllilcycl5 November 2019
The thunderous roars of what must have been thousands of artillery pieces finally stopped. A loud whistle breaks the deadly silence with the order to "go over the top", accompanied by a harrowing cry of "Fix bayonets!" All hell breaks loose. The dreaded sound of not one, but many water-cooled machine guns springs into action, each clicking sound brings down one of the attackers. When the frenzy finally stopped minutes later, the defenders peeked over their gunsights and surprisingly find a deserted battlefield littered with enemy bodies, some still pleading for a medic or their mothers as they sank deeper into the mud. This is just another day in the World War I first-person shooter game Battlefield 1, produced by the Swedish game studio DICE under the American gaming giant Electronic Arts. I have to admit that Battlefield 1 is the first-ever video game that haunted my dreams. There has been more than one occasion where I woke up screaming at midnight, having just dreamt of being mutilated by showers of machine-gun fire while entangled by barbed wires. It is the scarier than all action games, including the series' archrival Call of Duty, while more action-filled than most horror games as Silent Hill or Resident Evil that resort to clichés of suspense and surprise to achieve their intentions. The entire point of video games is to create an alternate reality where the player can entertain himself or herself with a world view never experienced before. The immersive experience of Battlefield 1 is exactly what makes it great. Indeed, most games nowadays have great-looking graphics, and many have decent sound effects and musical compositions, but no game studio has exhausted the potential of modern animation and sound production technologies as DICE did with Battlefield 1. The map Verdun Heights, with entire hilltops set ablaze by German shells while the French desperately fight to hold, is surely impressive; yet witnessing scenic wheat fields and pastures in the Somme River map being gradually reduced to a quagmire of mud, blood, and dead bodies over the course of a game has been even more disconcerting. This, combined with sound effects featuring distorted battle cries, desperate calls of different soldiers, and deafening gunshots seems to have taken the player back in time a hundred years to this insane "war to end all wars." To add to all the drama, considerable effort are even put into the iconic music theme of the Battlefield series, with a dark mumbling sound beneath the symphonic arrangement, supposedly being the whispers of deceased souls on the very battlefields the players are headed to. Battlefield 1 would surely not such a historical game as it is without its exploration of World War I and of the nature of war itself. The game's most outstanding multiplayer game mode is the Operations, where opposing armies fight over control of contiguous sectors of the frontline spread through different maps and moving on to the next after one has been captured. Every exhausting, hour-long Operations campaign would fit inside a broader historical narrative, and players feel like they are writing or rewriting history by, say, successfully breaking through the deadlock of Gallipoli and seizing Istanbul for the British crown or standing fast to the onslaught of German aggressors on the Marne, only a few miles away from Paris as the capital of France. By constantly reminding the players of the destruction they unleashed in their last game, these historical perspectives add unprecedented depth to the chronicles of Battlefield 1, which, together with the graphic scenes of gameplay, convey a powerful antiwar message. To speak out against World War I and just about any wars in a video game title is a rare but welcoming scene in an entertainment industry dominated by glorifications of Rambo-style "one-man armies" and comical approaches to both real and hypothetical military conflicts. All the above deals with the multiplayer part of the game, which the Battlefield franchise has traditionally excelled at. On the other side of the coin, Battlefield 1's single-player campaign is too short and generalized to be too spectacular. DICE indeed tried to bring personal narratives to the greater conflict through six 30-minute long "war-stories," told by separate combatants of different genders, races, and nationalities, but there is only so much detail one could pack into what is even shorter than an episode of a TV series. In a nutshell, Battlefield 1 presents incredible and immersive scenes of the horrors of World War I and builds on concrete historical narratives, mostly through its multiplayer gameplay. Even with a single-player campaign that could be longer and better, the fact is still that Battlefield 1 would be one of the most iconic historical action games ever made. This game is a must-play for anyone seeking a truly thrilling journey through the Great War; however, drama-seekers and those obsessed with the plots of a particular game might not find it to be the most satisfying one out there.
