Quotes

  • Elle Hart : If you really want to know, I agree with Mom. I shouldn't be working on this farm every day - one that's clearly inadequate for us. I need to get a real job for real money for a real meal. Look at what you're putting us through - what you're putting Wood through!

Saul Hart : His name is Woodrow, dammit!

Elle Hart : I don't care what you call him! He didn't ask for this. He didn't ask to be crippled. He didn't ask for you to be his father. And I didn't ask to be stuck between his suffering and your BS! Do you know how this makes us feel? I hate it! I hate it for me and for Woodrow!

Saul Hart : And what about me, Elenore? What the hell about me? Supporting you and your brother who's got all the problems in the whole damn world, and your mother's so sick, she can't even get up out of bed?

Elle Hart : Then I'll go. It'll be one less person for you to provide for.

Saul Hart : You are not leaving this damn house!

  • Elle Hart : She awoke to the distant sound of the church bell. It was another beautiful morning for the young princess. Every morning, she would play in the fields with her family: her father, the king of the land, her mother, the queen, and her younger brother, the prince. There, they had a playground of their own.

  • Cole Salinger : Elle, it's really no problem.

    Elle Hart : Cole!

    Cole Salinger : Elenore!

    Elle Hart : Coleridge!

Cole Salinger : Elenore Middle Name Hart!

  • Cole Salinger : Okay, so I don't know how miserable it is to grow up on a farm with no money, but this episode with your dad... I've been there, Elle. My dad and I have been there. My dad and his brothers, and their father, and their grandfather - my great grandfather - they were all in the Navy. But that was their life, but I'm an artist. I'm a photographer! I mean, the only thing I've ever shot is a picture, but my dad didn't think anything of that. He assumed I wanted to continue on with the family tradition - basic training after high school... But I could never... It's not that I don't support the Navy, but it's just not my thing. My dad didn't get that, though. I mean, my mom was on my side, but Dad would not budge. He was heated. I was heated. So I told him to shove it... Went on my own, and later, my parents got divorced... Elle, listen to someone who's already screwed up and don't screw this up. Letting my family fall apart was the worst thing I could ever do. You have time to fix this - today.

Elle Hart : I'll try... But only if you try, too.

  • Elle Hart : Mom, dad... I'm going out at five with some of my friends.

Saul Hart : ...Friends? You don't have any money.

Elle Hart : Cole was gonna pay for me. He's one of my friends.

Saul Hart : Will you be home tonight?

Elle Hart : Yeah... Yes sir.

  • Cole Salinger : Well... What'd ya think?

Elle Hart : Episode two was my favorite.

Cole Salinger : The Empire Strikes Back.

Elle Hart : So that one is episode... two?

Cole Salinger : No. The Empire Strikes Back is episode five.

Elle Hart : The first one we watched was episode four.

    Cole Salinger : Right.

Elle Hart : So what are the first three episodes?

Cole Salinger : Okay, well, you don't have to watch them. They're not really that important. I mean, you can if you want to, but I will say that Ewan McGregor is pretty amazing. They actually just came out with a seventh one. It's great. It's really great.

  • Saul Hart : Elenore... Do you know what time it is?

    Elle Hart : It's noon.

Saul Hart : And what time did you say you were gonna be home?

    Elle Hart : ...Last night.

  • Elle Hart : ...What time is it?

Cole Salinger : It is 2:13.

Elle Hart : I didn't realize how late it was!

  • Cole Salinger : Is that yours? The... Nissan? Well I'm assuming it wasn't exactly the car of your choice?

Elle Hart : Beggars can't be choosers.

  • Bonnie Hart : Elenore... I love you.

Elle Hart : ...Love you too, Mom.

  • Saul Hart : After you drop Woodrow off at school, you'll need to go pick up some more firewood. And the garden needs more fertilizer, so you'll probably need to go ahead and clean up the chicken coop today as well. And I'm pretty sure the truck...

Elle Hart : Needs gas. I know.

  • Cole Salinger : Oh, Jacob. You know he actually told me that he thinks he's from Japan?

Elle Hart : He doesn't look very Japanese to me!

    Cole Salinger : I know! He doesn't.

  • Jacob : Okay, so there is so much road, right? And it all pretty much connects, right? But... What if technology gets better and, I don't know, we don't need roads anymore? You can't just pick up the roads and put them somewhere else!

Cole Salinger : How do you even come up with this stuff?

Elle Hart : You know, we have a little dirt road, and someone had to create a road to get to our little dirt road. Someone had to connect everything.

Jacob : But you see, that's what gives me my sneaking suspicion! So... Okay... What if all of the roads are a part of some secret villainous plot? Like, the government or something has some secret ruler that controls all of the roads for their diabolical plan?

  • Elle Hart : I'm going to be as candid as I possibly can be. Dad... I don't really know why, but I've felt so much tension between us for the past few years. I don't even know if I've ever really liked you. But if I've never liked you, it's because I misjudged you. The burden of this farm and our family's problems makes me feel dejected and isolated, and it's always been that way for me - even since I was a kid. I hate it so much. I dreamed so desperately for something better, but I never really realized that you dream, too. You try to provide for us when you know you can't, and that is more than I could ever dream of asking for. So I'm sorry. I'm sorry for never trying to figure out who you are and how much you care for me. I'm sorry I never tried to tell you who I am. You still love me. You still love me and you don't even know me! I'm sorry I never tried to tell you who I am. But right now, I need to do what's best for our family. And right now, that's staying together.

  • Elle Hart : Finally, after saying farewell to her prince, the girl awoke from her own faded fantasy - a fantasy that displaced her frustrations towards a man whose dreams were long forgotten. At last, the kingdom was reunited - a king without a throne, a princess without a crown, and a family with each other.

  • Jacob : So... Remember when I was asking about roads? Th - That's a real thing: highway engineering. But uh... pretty sure... highway engineering isn't a malicious activity...

Elle Hart : Oh... That's unfortunate.

Cole Salinger : Very unfortunate. Great, Jacob.
