Liev Schreiber plays Colonel Cantwell, a senior US Army officer in post WW2 Italy serving on active duty. Army grooming regulations, particularly for senior officers, were very strict at that time and there is no way that Col Cantwell would have been allowed to wear a scruffy beard.
