On World TV Day, the United Nations put its spotlight on the key role television plays in focusing the world’s attention on a wide array of issues – ranging from the environment to conflicts and other pressing economic and social issues.
At a panel discussion event on Tuesday, the Un showcased collaborations between the TV industry and international organizations on various ways to educate people in an entertaining fashion.
Blending the goals of her activism with her work on the American drama series Graceland, Serinda Swan spoke about how she was able to infiltrate entertainment with philanthropy, spotlighting her work on human trafficking.
She had her character sold into a sex trafficking ring, “so that our viewers get to see what really happens to these girls.”
And it worked. Ms. Swan has had people tell her that they have made life-altering changes because of watching the show.

Hln has picked up a season order of “ASPIREist,” a news feature series from the Peabody Award-winning producers of “60 Minutes.”
The show highlights “pressing cultural issues and inspirational stories and then enables viewers to take immediate action,” a spokesperson said.
Each installment features a celebrity crusader, like George Clooney on the show’s first outing on the USA network which landed the Edward R. Murrow Award for Excellence in Innovation. The new season features Ben Affleck, Adrian Grenier and Russell Brand among others.
“ASPIREist” is produced by “60 Minutes” alums Shawn Efran.
