Names like Hattie McDaniel, Eddie Anderson, Dorothy Dandridge, Herb Jeffries and Louise Beavers, to name a few, are unknown to most movie-goers today but they shouldn't be forgotten. They too helped shape the image of Hollywood. Also included are a look at black filmmakers in the early days-like Oscar Micheaux and Spencer Williams, and an examination of the racial issue-the limited servant or savage roles in early films and how many African Americans emerged superstars despite the limited roles.
