A great micro budget thriller
For all its faults, this is quite charming. It's for a large part almost like a play, tightly scripted. Paul (Russell Hall) and Gillian "call me Gill' (Carol Aston) meet when she rents him a Greek apartment for a holiday. They get to know each other, and reveal more of their past as they get to know each other.
These films are very much an acquired taste, but I do like Michael's DIY approach and the variable acting adds to the charm somewhat. Carol Aston is the more capable performer, frequently outperforming Russell and competing confidently with his generous hairspray budget.
It moves along quickly enough. The version on the box set annoyingly is prepared using the only available film elements so switches between quite nice 16mm and VHS quality. It's ok though, this is the best version we will ever see and when you have the box set and read the accompanying materials you can tell this was put together by people with a lot of love and respect for an unsung auteur.
Paul is harbouring a secret that we find out about somewhat cryptically early on, in a conversation with his ex-girlfriend in a flashback. You do get a feeling of the growing love between them, and the complications of both their situations. Then it all gets more complicated. Well plotted and written, another example of Michael J. Murphy's considerable talents.
It's an enjoyable enough 56 mins, and very comparable to one of his earlier works "Secrets" in terms of location and cast. "Secrets" was highly enjoyable (again, tempered by the expectations of micro budget fare such as this). Carol Aston is lovely and talented, she should have seen more success.
I couldn't place who he reminded me of, but Russell Hall looks like a cross between George Michael and Jeff Lynne in a good way, and is ludicrously tall compared to the petite Carol.
