Great Look at Writing for Friedkin

Don't Go Into The Woods - An Interview With Stephen Volk (2011)

**** (out of 4)

Excellent, well-detailed interview with screenwriter Stephen Volk who discusses the ups and downs of working on THE GUARDIAN. He starts off talking about how he heard about the project and talks about how originally it was supposed to be directed by Sam Raimi. After Raimi left the project he talks about William Friedkin coming on board and how at first he was excited but nervous due to his reputation. From here we learn about the various issues with the production including the studio forcing the supernatural aspects as well as Friedkin pretty much re-writing everything. I really loved this interview because Volk is extremely honest and open about the subjects at hand. A lot of times people keep the darker stuff hidden but I loved the fact that Volk talked about Friedkin taking over the screen writing duties and at one point Volk calls himself a typist. He also talks about how things would change daily and how sometimes the producer would be happy with something only to then have the director unhappy. A great interview.
