Still fairly interesting at this point

I never watch network TV series in real time. This one I picked up used on dvd, to miss the week long waits between episodes and all the commercials. Animal Kingdom is interesting, though the casting choices include more fugly actors than attractive ones, at least among those outside the central character circle.

The storyline is borderline weak, being based loosely on a film of the same name. The central characters are a family of armed robbers including the matriarch as the founding member and the sons and adopted siblings who grew up in that trade.

At the point of this episode, the story is still fairly interesting, with the family changing their MO away from banks and other armed robberies to break ins. There are some weak actors on the periphery of the cast, but the central figures are decent actors.

Smurf is played by Ellen Barkin who is the least able of the cast. She's almost a miscast, being an elderly appearing former vamp type. The sons are all pretty good in their roles, playing spoiled, overgrown kids who are having to grow up as their mother/gang leader becomes unbearable to them.

We'll see how well the storyline holds up as it is slowed down to fill a series of several seasons.
